sample032 I'd love to know what the click-through rates are for these ads. After the initial novelty wears off, of course.

in What’s next: a Mint for your physical location? on VentureBeat
Hey Mark - this implicit web stuff gets me so excited. That is one of the reasons I was really excited to bring Josh on as an investor in Xobni - he really gets it. At Xobni we have so many more plans for that data exhaust in email - can you imagine what your email client knows about your purchase history (all of your receipts go there) or your travel history (all of your flight confirmations go there)? It is nuts.

I think you've nailed it when you say location is next. I think a lot of people have been calling that web 3.0

I just installed CitySense on my iphone to see what they are doing with location data. They'll tell you what area of your city has the most activity (based on active cell phones) and what areas are "hotter" than normal. I'm hoping to find out about all kinds of events and gatherings I otherwise would never have known about.

very cool stuff. good article.

in Microsoft says Google tool breaks Outlook on VentureBeat
You should really try Xobni again Haggie. Xobni launched their first product quickly, before all the bugs were fixed - it was in beta until only 4 months ago, so it is understandable that there were some issues. However, the new version is incredibly fast, and it is easily the best way to search outlook

in Twitter and Posterous on mattmaroon.com
I love posterous. Funny, that you didn't submit this blog post via posterous tho.

Twitter is amazing for real time search - it is a great way to find out what people are thinking about you product. Or to find out why there are helicopters flying over LA. I hope twitter doesn't die, because i love consuming the content through search, but as a content creator on twitter, i feel kind of blah about it.

mattmaroon Do you really think real time search is largely used for stuff that can't wait? The choppers over you I can understand I guess. But if I want to know what people think about my company, I use Google Alerts, or Techrigy, or something of that nature. While I hope they return all relevant tweets too, I don't really feel the need to know about it within moments of it happening.

in 12seconds crowd-sources commercials for a business model on top of Twitter on VentureBeat
To me, this feels very much like Hulu's model, which I think is a great one. Show short commercials interlaced with great content optimized for an ADD world. We're excited that Xobni is part of 12seconds.tv's success.

Very excited to be a part of 12seconds.tv's success. Web video is still such an unsaturated and exciting marketing channel.

in Justin.tv integrates with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace on VentureBeat
This is a really smart move by the Justin.tv folks. Now we're all going to start seeing the most interesting content on Justin.tv right as it happens thanks to our Facebook and Twitter networks. Somebody capturing a robbery live? I'll know about it. Sweet!

Adam, this is a really well written post. Who'd a thunk you could write killer software and killer prose.

At this point (2 years after starting a YC funded company) I can easily say that the YC network is the most valuable thing I've gained from the experience. And, I'm not talking about all the angels, VCs, and other valley dwellers, i'm talking about the other YC founders. It is so fantastic to have a group of smart entrepreneurs surrounding you as we each run this marathon.

Jamie,

I would go crazy if I couldn't take my Yamaha FZ6 up highway 1 at least once a weekend. Entrepreneurs are natural risk takers, but additionally for me the focus required to take a windy road at 65 mph, avoid potholes and always be ready for a cager that doesn't see you, forces me to forget about my startup for a while and focus on not killing myself. Riding is one of the only ways I've found to truly unwind. This past weekend I rode 750 miles to santa barbara and back in 36 hours.

Siminoff Matt,
First of all I think that you are an awesome entrepreneur and I know a lot of entrepreneurs that are also awesome and have motorcycles.
The problem that I find in looking at a ride/no ride decision on motorcycles through a entrepreneur’s/vc eyes is that the down side is too great for the upside that you get. That does not mean that there are not entrepreneurs out there that are successful who take on incredible risks but I think that if you look at long term track records of successful entrepreneurs I think that you will find that the more financially well off ones are very smart in how they gage risk return when entering into something.

With a motorcycle the risk is too high (in my opinion) of receiving a crippling injury or death to make the return, the rush of doing 60 on highway 1 worth it.

But then again I am not a billionaire (yet) so who I am to give advice anyway:)

in Want some of that Skype cash? Call Atomico on Mathew's comments
That is a pretty fantastic group to be involved with. Niklas has been very helpful to us, and Mattias has been very accessible despite being a continent and an ocean away from San Francisco. Atomico is doing good things.

Fred,

Thanks for the very kind post. The response has been truly amazing. Just to clarify, we did a 12 hour early beta period yesterday for people following TechCrunch40 conference. We are now in invite-only beta. We have a very small team and we need to limit the install base to handle feedback and still have time to iterate on the product. We will be rolling out more invites soon. If you are interested, sign-up at www.xobni.com/download

in What’s your viral loop? Understanding the engine of adoption on Futuristic Play by @Andrew_Chen

Good stuff Andrew. You mentioned Tagged.com's funnel - I got "tricked" into registering for YouNoodle the same way. I just wanted to see why people were talking about me. After I was in the site I immediately sent out an email to a couple investor dudes and said, "keep an eye on this one."

Ashish,

I'm glad our work at Xobni inspired you and your friends to discuss fixing email over dinner. You've come up with a really great list of features. We've thought about a lot of these same ideas. We are really looking forward to showing you and the rest of the web what we have spent the last 14 months developing.

btw, you should update your about page. I had to use the whois to find out who you are!

Best,
Matt

Ben,

I'm glad you found our post helpful. I fought some of these changes, like hiring an office manager, because I thought, "I can do it myself, I'll just work harder." I've learned it is more productive to work smarter instead.

speak soon,
Matt
