in ACORN Office Raid Reflects GOP Anger at Voter Registration Drive on The Washington Independent
I too think it's a result of laziness, however, those committing the fraud should be punished. It's your word against ACORN, Brett, but I believe as a result of previous lawsuits and the same shrill from GOP operatives in past elections (who support purging legally registered voters off voter rolls), ACORN does now make it clear to their employees the consequences of submitting fake registration forms and they do work with elections officials to prosecute these individuals. What is most bothersome to me is that it clogs up the system for the elections officials who are trying to get millions of new registration forms processed before the election. We cannot have fair elections unless every eligible voter is afforded the opportunity to vote, including even the weakest among us. I agree, JJ.

Old info, Brett. ACORN no longer pays by the "card." Their workers are paid an hourly wage. You'd have to assume that elections officials take no steps to validate voter registration forms, and that simply is not true. It's hyperbole. Anyone with voter registration information (used by all political parties for GOTV efforts) can tamper with voter registration forms unfortunately. It doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen across the country.

"Today's raid by the Secretary of State's Office is a stunt that serves no useful purpose other than discredit our work registering Nevadans and distracting us from the important work ahead of getting every eligible voter to the polls."

ACORN is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, with over 400,000 member families across the country. Since 1970, *ACORN* has taken action and won victories on such issues as better housing, living wages for low-wage workers, more investment in our communities, and better public schools.

Year after year it seems the GOP targets ACORN with claims of massive voter fraud. What the neo-GOP has taught me under GWBush is that when they are claiming someone else is lying, they're actually lying...when someone else is cheating, they're actually cheating. Does the name Nathan Sproul ring a bell? (He's now operating under Lincoln Strategy Group out of AZ.) He advocated throwing Democratic registration forms in the garbage in his drives.

So, as I see it, the real problem with the bogus registration forms has to do with overtaxing elections officials who are already working feverishly (I hope) to process legitimate registration forms. That's unfortunate. But to know that 1.3 million at-risk Americans may participate in the voting process as a result of ACORN's work is heart-warming.

Now, about the GOP lying and cheating -- it's called election fraud. Besides GOP operatives like Sproul above, more recently there is shocking news that the former AG Gonzalez fired one or more US attorney generals for NOT going forward with filing bogus cases of voter fraud (e.g., Iglesias in New Mexico for one)? The point is really Republicans know the more registered Democratic-leaning voters there are, the more likely their candidate will lose the election. So they push for suppression -- and what's worse they target the weakest in our society or misuse judicial power when possible to crush their opponents, while wearing or waving the American flag! It's shameful.

And now we have this drama being carried out with the hope of swaying the good people of Nevada to vote against Democrats. These tactics have taken our nation to the edge of an abyss and still paranoid party hacks can't help themselves. Republicans have controlled the White House for far too long. And they fight to retain that power, which they have sorely abused. Their claims against Democrats are as false as their claims about Iraq, 9-11, and weapons of mass destruction.
