"1. take a “dictionary” —- say, of all combinations of alphanumerics less than 15 characters 2. hash all of them 3. burn the results onto a DVD."
Where do you get your dvds?! By my calculations, you would have 62^14 password hashes. Even if we miraculously collided 999,999 out of 1,000,000 passwords (so you only have to store 1 hash out of every million passwords hashed), you're still looking at 12 exabytes of data. Do you have 12,000 terabyte DVDs?
In every discussion on this that I've read on this subject, people have drastically underestimated the search space involved.
What would make me switch from netflix to blockbuster? If blockbuster allowed you to rent either movies *or* games. It'd be nice to have a game and 2 movies out.. or if there weren't any games you wanted to play, to have 3 movies.
