zhang fan left because the folks at dfj decided he was not good enough to be a partner and china head. he found out they had hired a headhunter to find a boss for him. they were dumb.
he was good enough for sequoia, and he is probably a top 3 china vc

the product is not that innovative, but it is going to hurt not so much yahoo finance but all the business media sites like marketwatch, cnn money etc.

the qihoo deal is even more interesting. the chairman of qihoo is zhou hongyi, formerly head of yahoo china (through yahoo's acquisition of his company 3721). and zhou is rumored to have taken the 3721 user data with him to the new company. so sequoia, which is an early yahoo investor, is now an investor in a competitor to yahoo china, run by a guy yahoo fired before his 3 year earnout was done, and who likely misappropriated yahoo china information. welcome to china investing!

CCTV has already killed deal with Tudou. Tudou was found to have too much porn on its service. The deal lasted all of one day. Tudou is spreading a very wide net in its current round of funding, primarily because China VCs know the company is a money pit and won't touch it. US VCs should be very wary of this deal. Without more funding I believe the company runs out of cash by June, at its current burn rate

What about the hotshot VP of Product Marketing and Operations they just hired--Chamath Palihapitiya. According to his bio on Facebook, he is "responsible for overseeing new monetization and advertising products, all business aspects of Facebook Platform, fbFund, customer operations, corporate communications, marketing, privacy and public policy."

In other words, Beacon. If you ask me, he is overrated. AOL went downhill under hi reign, and clearly he does not understand Facebook's community.

Facebook needs some adult management
