in Things to Be Thankful For on YBPGuide
I am definitely thankful for my wife and her wonderful accomplishment of earning her Ph. D. in neuropsychology. It is definitely a blessing. I am thankful for my professional network and career. I am also thankful for being able to purchase my first home. And it was truly a blessing to be able to witness the election of the first black president. To hear the pride in my parents and grandparents voices (who all marched on Bloody Sunday in Selma, AL) was just amazing. It is a year I will never forget.

in F*ck the ‘Black in America’ Haters on YBPGuide
It seems that this entire documentary has had an effect on everyone that had the opportunity to view it, whether positive or negative. I agree, there were parts of the documentary where I felt were cliche but maybe we're all missing the point. Obviously, this documentary has created a lot of dialogue. However, the problem is that it usually stops at dialogue. Why should we look for the solutions to our problems in the documentary? If it was that easy to solve everything that is problematic in our community, it would have been done. Detailing the "black" experience in America is complicated and of course certain aspects of that experience are going to be overlooked or missed. But would our opinions be different if one of own Black film makers missed important parts of the black experience? If you look hard enough for something negative, eventually you'll find it. But instead of us talking until we're blue in the face about what CNN didn't cover, what are we doing to make sure that our true experience is being captured? Take a second and think about it. But remember, everyone's experience is not the same so be ready for healthy helpings of disagreement if you ever decide to express your version of the black experience to someone.

I say more power to her. I do not find it disrespectful at all. However, I'm sure FOXNEWS will find plenty of people that do.

in Black in America on CNN and HBCU campuses on YBPGuide
I think that this is a great idea, and as an alumnus from Florida A&M, I thought that he did an excellent job and represented the university proudly.

in pandora: better internet radio on YBPGuide
Great post, Fredric. I also have been a frequent user of Pandora. Another great internet radio site is www.slacker.com. It has a very similar concept to Pandora. Check that out if you get a chance.

in another young, black professional…dead on YBPGuide
Today is a tragedy. While Sean Taylor's life may have been different than mine, I still feel the pain of a man that died trying to protect his family. I do not know the whole story so I am not going to speculate but it just continues to show me that the young black male is in danger. It is a complicated problem with no easy solutions. What can we do as young black professionals? While we can't save every life, I do believe that we have a responsibility to try and address these problems. The black male is in danger.

in ybps: get off the real estate bandwagon on YBPGuide
Fred, you actually beat me to the punch for this article. While I do not think that getting totally away from real estate is the answer, I do think that it is wise for young black professionals to diversify their investments. Instead of looking at real estate as the holy grail, understand that it may not provide the best return on your investment, and thus, should not make up the majority of your portfolio. But the key learning about smart investments and not trying to strike it rich on the deal of a lifetime. Sometimes you are able to find diamonds in the rough through research. But understand that investing is about setting goals and not getting rich quick.

in wearing black tomorrow, sept. 20, for jena 6 on YBPGuide
I also did not wear black but I support all of those who did. We must remember that demonstrating and advocating can give a voice to the unheard and forgotten. It is truly a tragedy that the Jena 6 incident is still happening today. Racism definitely is not dead. But my question to all YBP's: Are demonstrations enough? What more can we do to show our support and help the cause?

in Congratulations for Choosing Love! on YBPGuide
I agree with you wholeheartedly, Garry. It was a wonderful wedding and I always think that it's commendable to take that step. Just being at the wedding yesterday made me relive some of the moments and wonderful times that I share with my wife, Adrienne. Choosing love was the best decision that I have ever made, and it continues to pay dividends daily. To Kimberly and Fredric, I wish nothing but happiness!

in Do we really need Black Music Month? on YBPGuide
To play devil's advocate, why not have black music month? As in every gesture of recognition, it is what you make of it. There is nothing inherently wrong with recognizing the contributions that have been made by blacks in basically defining many of the genres that are enjoyed by many. Maybe it is important that other people realize that we have contributed more to the music world than hip-hop. While black music month may seem hollow to those that have a greater understanding of these contributions, for those that need to be informed and educated, this month could be used as a tool to cultivate learning. To some, people, rock & roll began with the Beatles and not Chuck Berry. Most people forget that the Rolling Stones owe their style and name to the great black bluesmen that the grew up idolizing. And in this day and age where Chicken Noodle Soup passes as a pop hit, we may need Black Music Month more than we think.

in Genarlow Wilson to go free on YBPGuide
I applaud the fact that the judge finally came to his sense and agreed to allow Genarlow Wilson to be freed. The law resulted in two of the most ridiculous sentences I have read about in recent years. However, there are those that do not want to bring this saga to an end. Apparently, Georgia's attorney general has filed an appeal of the judge's decision, so Genarlow Wilson is not free. Here's a link to the story: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/11/teen.sex.case/...
