in Toma Jamon & A Beginner’s Guide to Spanish Cured Ham on Catavino
PS: Come to Portugal and import the Jamon :)
gabriellaopaz Not sure I need to, as you have some outright delicious cured ham yourselves. Presunto is incredible regardless if it is from Chaves in the north or the Alentejo in the south. Not to say that Spanish jamon isn't drop dead incredible, but the Portuguese definitely have a leg to stand on when it comes to delicious cured hams :-)

in Using QR Code to Market Quevedo Wines on Quevedo Port Wine
Congratulations Oscar and all of the Quevedo team!

Being a first mover (together with Cortes de Cima) is a great achievement. In an often conservative industry these kind of innovative approaches are certainly the way to go and get more drinkers / customers.

I'm happy we provide the technology behind the QRCodes and help Quevedo in this new world of online technology.

in No More Predictions - Top 10 Things that WON’T Happen in the Online Wine World in 2009 on wine blogger
Great post. I specially agree with point 7: "Integrate wine into potential clients lives, don’t ask them to change their lives to understand your wine."

in CaipiRoyal, A Port Cocktail From A Port Wine Producer - Is Cocktail The Future of Port? on Quevedo Port Wine
I haven't tasted it myself (missed it at the Porto & Douro Wine show) but it looks like a very interesting and tasty drink.

If Port continues to carry the traditional brand label, then young people won't drink it. It's with things like CaipiRoyal that Port can be made cool and attract a whole new set of consumers (that we will even grow with the brand for years to come).

in 6 Things you Don’t Know about Catavino on Catavino
Speaking as a person who knows you two personally I would say that I expected nothing less that what you wrote here! You're an amazing couple and although I can certainly see the "cocky and arrogant" and "hippy tree hugger" :) I wouldn't exchange that for anything! Good thing you too have a strong personality!

in QR Code and Wine - Another Zany Idea from Catavino on Catavino
Hi Gianpaolo,
we've been testing the QRCodes with Codes de Cima and the first tryouts had a few different sizes. We then used a couple of mobile phones with different cameras and we've come to a minimum size that works with 80% of the mobile phones. I agree with José Eduardo that cameras are getting better and better and lots of people already have auto-focus and flash in their mobiles. It's not mainstream yet but it does work well for the people who already use the codes.

Ciao

Justin, thank you for the opportunity (and the glasses) to taste Sherry!

It was the first time I tasted Sherry and I must confess I'm now a fan.

in A Thin Line Between Cultural Norms and Complete Incompetence on Catavino
You could be living in Portugal and the story would be just the same. Nothing really changes every year and whoever is in charge doesn't really care if 1.000 have a problem getting service. The other 30 million pay on time so that's fine for them. Quality process is a non-existent thing.

How do I deal with it in Portugal? I keep pilling up bureaucratic stuff and then on one week I try to sort all of them out. I guess that doesn't work in the case of electricity. To that I agree CusCus, get a bottle of wine and enjoy the moon :)

in Catavino, Ad-Free Since last Friday - A 3 Year Anniversary Surprise! on Catavino
Congratulations on the 3 years! What are you drinking to celebrate?

Blogging without ads is a long-term bet that I'm you'll win. It's also a way to show that you're not dependent on page views and that you believe in being relevant and having credibility. I'm sure you'll find a way to charge for those.

Cheers,

in Txarli says it’s Time to Check in with our Readers! What have you been Drinking? on Catavino
I was really anxious for a tasting that started with a Esporão Reserva 1999 Red, a Tapada de Coelheiros 2002 White and a Tapada de Coelheiros 2001 White that I "discovered" in my father's cellar.

The red wine was too old (or maybe cellar condition was not ideal) and the whites despite also being old were incredibly clean with a dark and beautiful yellow.

I'll keep invading my father cellar's and I might discover something interesting!

in European Wine Blogger Conference 2008 on Catavino
Hi Ryan,
this a great idea. Wine Bloggers are getting more and more (much deserved) attention and it was time a conference like this would take place. We're are working to help enhance that and let people find and follow more bloggers.

We've just launched Wine Blogger Accounts in Adegga and it's only the start.

We would love to help promote the event. If you're interested let us know.

Cheers,
André

in Portuguese Lurkers! on Catavino
Like Andre said we listen. :)

I want to thank you guys for the great work you've been doing at Catavino. Dedicating time and knowledge to tell others about the world of wine is a enormous task. You guys are doing a great job talking about Portuguese and Spanish wine.

Regarding Adegga I would also thank you for the great work you two have been doing as beta testers! Your suggestions have been priceless and are certainly contributing to a better Adegga.

Adegga is a service that let's people discover wines based on other people's choices. We're providing a place where anyone can select who do they trust and want to follow on the world of wine: Friends, bloggers, producers, etc. We call it Social Wine Discovery. For more on our project check out our blog.

We've been working hard at our Adegga. Somewhere around September we'll have some very good news!

Thank you Ryan and Gabriella!

ps: I'm in France right now visiting the Loire. I'm staying in Angers and after only 2 days I've learned so much about this region's wines. It's amazing the small differences between so many (and so close) sub-regions.
