in TMUP 174: Backblaze Interview and a deep dive into an iMovie 09 Project on Typical Mac User Podcast Forum
I priced backing up 1.5 TB of photos to Amazon on S3 using Jungle Disk. Ouch. Even without the "basndwidth" charges, it would be cheaper to buy a NEW 1.5 TB hard disk each and every month.

FYI JungleDisk now has provision to backup to servers run by its "mother ship" without "bandwidth charges." Still, buy that new hard disk, each and very month for the same or less.

SO, thanks for bringing BackBlase to our attention. I sure hope the company and their model survives!

Thanks for the answer. What do you think of semi-VPN services like WiTopia.net ?

georgestarcher I have never used them. Their site and product listing looks interesting. For myself I just SSH everything back to my home. For work we have internally supported VPN solutions. I am in the process of recording a screencast series for TMU on SSH setup and usage. Uploading several clips to Victor's macpro media storage drive right as I type this actually.

One option is to create a NEW ADMIN account, then change your old admin acct with everything in it to a STANDARD ACCT and continue to use it.

So, Victor, in the security segment, DotPaul was talking about how a user's credentials can be hijacked from Safari (or another browser) by malware that forces the browser to visit often visited secure sites while the malware captures the credentials over WiFi. At least that is what I thought I heard.

I'm fanatical about using Safari or Camino as my only browsers for visiting sites where I log in with credentials. Why? Every time I log out, I go the menu option to RESET Safari or Camino. Every time. And I don't let the browsers store log on info, however they do it. That's EVERY TIME, home, work, or the rare visit to a public WiFi site.

I go one step further when visiting public WiFi (not often, I assure you). I keep a separate "Standard" User Account just for public WiFi. So (in theory) neither my regular "Standard" user account with "real info" nor my Administrator account are exposed to WiFi hijack.

Are those major steps toward safety? Or am I still at risk from those particular vulnerabilities?

georgestarcher Hi There, you are not the norm. Paul was referring to folks whom log in to web sites but never log out. When you log in and before you close the web browser your session is typically cached as logged in until you close the web browser completely. This is what Paul was referring to. Any malware can then access deep link pages or account information taking advantage currently authenticated session. You are taking clearing it out to an effective extreme. For the casual user simply pressing log out is usually enough. And even better if they close the browser completely before changing from a sensitive site to casual browsing.

Great show, Victor. Explained HOW and WHY. Covered things I had no idea about, including what the Simple Finder does.

How about following up with kiosks?

I had to set up a buncha' windows machines for public access. Didn't thin about locking down the firmware. Fortunately I was there to watch as the first public users arrived. One "lady" executed the three finger salute, then started to lock down the machine with her own firmware password. Had she succeeded with that machine, she would (at great cost!) have wrecked the rest.

Kiosks! Not exactly typical, but macintosh user!

in TMUP 132-5 Post WWDC Live Special Show on Typical Mac User Podcast Forum
Victor! That was great. The way you handled the Skype calls in added immediacy. You moderated the calls so well, I'm calling it better than the TalkShoe live shows. It will be interesting to see, er, hear what you try next, but whatever you do, this show certainly "worked."

It was nice to hear Jane from Perth and realize that what we hear/have/do in the U.S.A. isn't necessarily everywhere.

One comment about .mac, er, MobileMe. It SEEMS that my .mac access has become faster in the last week. The iDisk opens faster, the directories i the iDisk open faster. I hope I am not just imagining this because the "old" version was just tedious. for MobileMe to "work" and gain and hold subscribers, access must be faster than the "old" .mac was, and it must stop flaking out so frequently.

One thing which did go by I thought I heard/read was that the "new" MobileMe would provide some document/ss setup like Google Docs. But I haven't been able to find it again.

typicalmacuser Yeah it was a decent good go at another way to do a live show. It did take WAY!!!! more post editing work but I thought it came out well. I wanted to be the first podcaster to put out a show with immediate reaction from all of YOU, and I did it.

Excellent!

The eBay RSA tokens you discussed? I've obtained them from my online brokers. Ask for one. If you have money you can't afford to lose accessible on the internet (including retirement accounts!), see if YOUR bank or BROKER will give you an RSA token.

You passed briefly by WPA passwords. My understanding about those is the longer and more complex the better. You sure don't want that drive download of all our personal data and files.

Thanx. #1 bagged.

#2 Guess I need to check out your video cast (laser etching the MBP?) on the 12" G4.

It is probably a matter of how the player (QuickTime?) sizes it on the user end?

This is entirely new to me, but like your other shows, the overview made it sound useful.

Me, though, I had visions of a accidentally sending out a ScreenCast like those huge jpg pics I've received in emails. You know, the ones which open with a full screen nose, and an HD view up the nostril --

typicalmacuser On 2# Well this is fairly new to me too (last 8 months or so). When you use quicktime to encode it has settings that are default for Apple TV, iPod, iPhone etc. These basic settings work for most things. Once you go into export using custom settings all bets are off. Look up video encoding on a mac in Google if you want your head to start spinning.
It is very useful to be able to do a screencast to show someone something quickly and you can do that basically out of the box with most of the apps I mention. Then it gets interesting.

A couple of questions from your ScreenCast overview.

1. You said to set the video to record in the final output, e.g., my MacBook has a "native" resolution of 1280 x 800. My wife is across the table using a 12" G4 Powerbook, 1024 x 768. And there's a lot more, I'm sure. So when you are making a ScreenCast which might be viewed on everything from a 12" Powerbook to a 30" Cinema, where do YOU recommend setting the video resolution?

2. I presume recording for the 30" Cinema would create an enormous file. So where's a good place for a compromise if you plan to downgrade from the HD original?

typicalmacuser On item 1: I like 1280X800, it's what I use.

2. I'm not sure if you need to compromise. Create the huge file, then edit it, then re-encode it to the size you finally want. If you are happy , delete the original file or back it up to a DVD for future reference. It becomes your master. If that's not what you meant, please respond. The tips from last night were meant to be very generic indeed.

Mine's already on order, just a way of supporting your efforts - and who knows, SuperModel Amber Valletta is known to visit home and eat at the same restaurant I frequent for breakfast . . . maybe she'll need Mac advice . . . and the t-shirt . . .

Hey, Victor, rant on! There's a reason they call that OS "Windon't"

And maybe you're not receiving audio from we listeners for two reasons: (1) your 'casts are so excellently self contained; (2) your live Sundays get the action.

This edition was great. And I'm sold. No Parallels, no Fusion, and no Windoze --- but I'm lookin' forward to that new TMUP T-Shirt.

typicalmacuser Thanks for the comments George. The T-shirts are for sale. Just look at the main web site to the left and you will see them.

in Finally Podcasting explained in Plain English on Typical Mac User Podcast Forum
This in an email from Victor! "You hear a lot of music on my show and it's all 100% royalty and copyright free ..."

Podcasters: you can't just use music from your library in your Podcasts. If you do, those "suits" just might show up and haul you off to the financial equivalent of Guantanamo. Do as Victor does, and be sure any music you blend into your casts is not protected by ASCAP, BMI, etc. You DON'T want those guys knocking on your door, that is, unless you've paid the license fees . . . and that sure would be expensive

typicalmacuser's picture
typicalmacuser Agreed. I use all royalty free music and I pay for the right to use it. It is NOT original artists. I agree any podcaster needs to be super careful about using copyrighted music in their shows Don't do it.
