I think the fact that you care about your preaching and put effort behind it is in itself a sort of authenticity. People pick up on that stuff - they'll know where your heart is.

Didn't you know that leather couches solve all, or at least most of, life's problems? I don't have one, but that's what I've been told. It sounds true. I think. But I will tell you this - if someone is standing in front of MY leather couch next time I'm at IKEA, I won't hesitate to break his legs with a faux silver candlestick to get what's mine. In case you're the one standing in front of me, I'm 6'3", bearded, and have an air of quiet desperation. Please move.

In addition to what blorge said (which was right on) you need time for everyone to come together. I go to Hope, so it's largeish, and I certainly don't talk to everyone every Sunday, but there's something great, something spiritually uniting about looking out during worship on people you've known for years and seeing that they're worshipping to - that you're doing the same thing. Sharing a journey, if you'll permit me the overused Christian aphorism.
But there's value in the house church model - actually knowing the people, talking. These things are important. Sounds like you're tacking to a good middle.

Hey Mark - great blog. I found you from Pat's. I felt a similar pain at the demise of Northern Exposure. Actually, the pain was sort of retrospective - when the show was on, I didn't fully appreciate it. I just started to love the reruns when they were on A&E at midnight. All of the characters were American archetypes - Chris as the free-spirit and intellectual, Maurice as big business/progress without a conscience, Joel as the anal New Yorker. Each episode would have three subplots woven together, and because the characters were archetypal in some way, the show managed to contain some real social commentary without being overt about it. In my opinion, Northern Exposure is a show without equal.
