You had me right up to the last sentence. Did you mean to use past tense, "persisted long after emancipation."? 'Cuz I would have gone with the present tense of "persists". lol.

Seriously, I find it fascinating that Germany, as a country, posseses the humility to erect monuments to those people they killed, and that includes Jews. I think an earlier poster failed to realize that the monuments to Jews ALREADY exist in Germany, they were referenced indirectly in the article.

Further I disagree that slavery could not be classififed as genocide because outright killing of slaves would be counterproductive to slavery. Counterproductive or not, many of those taken as slaves perished on the way to America and/or on the way to their final destination due to neglect starvation and poor treatment. The slave trade decimated whole villages and tribes back in Africa. The slaves that did survive the journey were so brutally treated that many died unnatural and early deaths.

Contrary to assertions that the point of holding slaves was to hold them and not to exterminate them, most american slave owners were so violently cruel and inhumane in their treatment of slaves that they inspired both England and Canada to outlaw slavery long before America. Further American slaveholders treated slaves as the original "renewable resource", there was no care taken not to damage the merchandise - not when there was an entire continent of replacements to be had back in Africa.

It is estimated that as many as 4 to 6 million Africans taken for the slave trade died. Given that slavery was based on the notion that the color of our skin was reason enough to assume our subhumananity and to enslave us I don't know what else you could call slavery but a systematic destruction of a race or culture. In my dictionary that spells genocide.

I think the argument only proves the point the author was trying to make in the first place. In this Country many find it easier to downplay the severity of slavery and the following jim crow oppression than to face the real consequences of such actions and the lingering effects. Its easier to make theoretical, academic and technical arguments than it is to take a good long hard look inward and challenge cherished beliefs about the structure of our society and how it came to be.

Yet, even knowing the truth of this fact every feminist and NOW inspired Obama slam took my breath away. White women truly do not get the extent to which they have excluded women of color from the movement by its focus and priorities. They truly do not grasp the level of privilege they enjoy that the rest of us don't. They often appear as breathless as I at the thought that we all aren't standing behind them as the adoring female negro throng.

That "many people" don't appreciate the issue doesn't chap my hide nearly as much as the thought that other women, white women, just do NOT get the issue. Why refer to it as the National Orgnization of Women when it seems more like the National Organization of White Women?

I don't know why I am dumbfounded with each new low to which the Clinton machine sinks. Am I the only one who, however briefly, wonders if there isn't some other plausible rational explaination.

On seeing this I was schoked then livid and then I wondered, is she self-sabotaging? Does she see some way of saving face in being able to claim later that her strategy failed her, her staff was ineffective...rather than acknowledging that she was beaten fair and square?

But then I come to my senses and the cold realization that this is Hakim's (sp?) razor in action: the simpliest explaination tends to be the correct one. So yes Virginia, these people really DO think we are all that damn stupid. Damn.

@ Anon - I'm not seeing where your comment relates to the posted article or prior comments. You of course, are right - we shouldn't vote based on our race or our sex. But that is neither stated nor implied in the article.

Jill is quite clear in her call for CBC superdelegates to vote with their districts rather than against their districts. She even acknowledges that some might then be casting for Clinton in the districts she won.

Maybe we're all so used to seeing/hearing this race based voting assumption in the mainstream media that it's permanently etched on our retinas and eardrums and now we see/hear it everywhere.

What is with Tubbs-Jones? As a Clinton surrogate she spends as much time defending Ms Ann as she does making personal attacks on Obama. Why is that? I don't see any of the other Clinton surrogates as shrill and irrational in their denouncement of all things Obama. It got me to thinking...

Last week on the Field Negro a commentator stated they were a Washington insider and knew firsthand how many of the female CBC members had "cougar'd" up on Obama when he first hit the Washington scene only to be turned down flat. I thought it just idle gossip but now, I wonder if there isn't something to it.

Maybe I am just imagining things, but Tubbs acts as if it's less about defending Clinton as it is about throwing some venom down on Obama. Did he do something, real or imagined, to offend her personally?

There are other bloggers and some limited discussions on women of color and the feminist movement, but you might have greater success finding them using the academic terms, try : intersectionality and critical race theory ($2 terms for what black AND female gets ya').

On the moving the goal posts front: CNN had commentators on yesterday stating that they now believed that Clinton could hang on to her vaibility even if she lost Texas or Ohio as long as she had a win, however minor, in the other state. As I understood it, she could then claim to have the ability to win the more important swing states and therefore continue to argue she has better electability.

I am pretty sure it was on this blog that I first heard of this Hail Mary strategy or something similar to this. Well, I guess you called it.

I'll be working the phones calling Texas tonight to help out the Obama Campaign. Let's hope he takes both by a landslide so we can end this foolishness already and start looking ahead to November.

@anon at 1:05pm. "Stick to the plan" is a reference to an earlier comment in another thread where Ronnie B suggested that instead of allowing ourselves to be taken for granted that, if the worst comes to pass, we all go independent.

That's independent, not Republican. In fact, immediately aligning ourselves with any party defeats the beauty and simplicity of Ronnie B's plan. As is, we are the base of the Democratic party, they need us to carry the day. But what if we held ourselves as a block of independent voters - whichever party wanted to prevail would have to "court" us. I guarantee you, if they had to court us we would see a change in attitude and tatics right quick.

But that's Plan B - Plan A is to win this bad boy. To that end we need to make sure we spend as much time doing whatever the campaign needs: donating, recruiting, etc., to make sure we stay in this to win this. It ain't over yet and nothing good can come of allowing all HRC's negativity to sap the positive energy and momentum (yes I said MOMENTUM) that Obama has as the front runner in this primary. He's on top and we need to keep him on top - open up that lead and leave her behind.

@ Angela, my good friend of 12 years is a Clinton supporter. This came up as I was explaining, several months back, to him and some other friends why I was voting for Obama. I made points outlining Obama's strengths and was careful to speak respectfully of Clinton. I made sure to let him know I respected his choice. His response? Was to tell me I had my facts wrong and take exception with my calling him racist because he wouldn't vote for Obama. He then demanded an apology for my playing the "bulls***" card.

I heard from most of the other email receipents, who were completely incredulous about this blow up - they didn't see how anyone could have read that into my email. Obviously I didn't give him an apology, as I hadn't even remotely called him racist. I asked for clarification on what was the "bulls***" card and that is the last I have heard from my good friend of twelve years. Sadly, I'm not anticipating hearing from him again.

While I grieve the split that appears to be occuring, whether I want it to or not, I am also resolved to moving forward. We can never know what is truly in the hearts of others and if something as cataclysmic as this election reveals to us ugly truths that we didn't realize were there under the surface than I think the best course of action is to cowboy up and deal directly with those revelations. When this election is over and the emotions have died down I might touch base with my old friend if only to confirm for myself that under that loving exterior was someone who was either unwilling or incapable of seeing me as a fully developed human being and was unwilling to work on his own prejudices and narrow-mindeness. It will be painful to revisit but necessary to honor the 12 years of friendship. In the end, if this election is what ends the friendship then I can say with some conviction, it wasn't a friendship that was designed to nourish and nuture either one of us in the long run. I deserve to surround myself with people who can disagree without dismissing, deflecting or denying alternative opinions. I deserve that, we all deserve that.

Bottom line, healthy friendships should be strong enough to endure political battles. If friendships are breaking up over this election battle than it speaks to disagreements of a much more fundamental nature. Like my friend and I, I wonder just how many of these friends had ever sat down and really had long honest discussions about race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and national origin before this election. I realize now that my friend and I never did and maybe we should have.

And therein lies the great racial divide (gender divide, sexual orientation divide, whatever divide have you): because the past really isn't past and it's difficult to find forgiveness in your heart for anyone when you are still being beaten down by injustices large and small on a nearly daily basis. History has allowed this Country to build whole systems that perpetuate the status quo and the status quo has never favored, let alone been fair to the minority populations in this Country. All we've ever asked for is equality - fairness.

It is not unreasonable to object to the idea that a vote for Senator Obama will end the problem of racial injustice. After all, voting for Senator Obama does NOT end racial injustice and no one I know is really naive enough to believe that anyway.

Instead I believe this tenative line of thought has been distorted by the MSM and some right wing bloggers as a way of belittling the many white people who sincerely believe in Senator Obama's message of hope and change.

A small group of the many Sen. Obama supporters I have spoken to believe a vote for Senator Obama could be a tentative start to addressing racial injustice - a leap of faith, a demonstration of their willingness to start the discussion and see it through, if you will. But they believe this in ADDITION to prefering his positive message, his platforms on healthcare, open government and the war and so forth.

You see the difference between the two? I would add my objection to the thought that a vote for Sen. Obama wipes the slate clean. That's just a weak a** attempt to shut the door on the issue, sweep it under the rug and continue on, business as ususal without ever addressing or redressing racial injustice.

Phrase it the second way and my attitude changes. Is voting for Sen. Obama a way of STARTING to bridge the abyss? I am willing to particpate in that social experiment. I certainly would have more faith that this Country is capable of one day redressing racial injustice when I see that that majority of its inhabitants are capable of coming together and electing a black (bi-racial) man as POTUS.

I read some comments in another blog that really resonated with me that I would like to share. It went something like this:

1st commentator: "its long past time America had a discussion about race"

2nd commentator: "we are already having a discussion - and it ain't going well."

I would implore you to go back and read Senator Obama's speech and keep reading it until you really understand it. It's the first glimmer of hope I have seen that this discussion about race might become more positive.

Rhondacoca - Brownfemipower is a blogger who for years has been writing about the intersation of race and feminisim and specfically delving into immigration as a feminist issue. She apparently was extremely well written and researched and an inspiration to a number of women of color bloggers.

Last week she took down her site, permantly, in the wake of what is apparently an appropriation of her work by Amanada Marcotte. (I use hedging language here because I came late to the party and didn't see Marcotte's article and haven't read bfp's work). Marcotte is a feminist writer. She apparently somewhat out of the blue recently did an article discussing how immigration is a feminist issue, something BFP has been fighting to get the white feminist establishment to acknowledge or pay attention to, for years.

Many who regularly read BFP and Marcotte said the points were so similar they expected some level of attribution at the end of the article but Marcotte did not attribute to BFP. They also note that Marcotte herself has been reading BFP for a couple of years and most recently attended a lecture by BFP on this issue, at a Women's confernce they both attended.

Wait Justice58 - is Sen. Obama without a church? Rev. Wright has retired from Trinity. I heard Sen. Obama renounce Wright, I didn't hear him say he was leaving Trinity.

I feel ya' Jack it looks like the double standard coming into play yet again. Actually it doesn't just look like it, it is, but it's also deeper than that.

IMHO, the closer Sen. Obama gets to becoming the Democratic nominee the more fired up the right and a part of the democractic base is to bring him down. The magic negro is just a little tooo magic for some folks.

My theory on this dumb ass Faux News manufactured controversy from right-wing professional nut-job Hannity goes like this: Hannity finds the Trinity tapes and carefully pores through them realizing that his demographic will be shocked and titallated by the preaching style. Then discovers with some editing he can get a bigger bang for his buck on the "chickens coming home to roost" and the "G-D America". Thus is born his carefully edited, out-of-context Wright's greatest hits clip. He takes it on air last year and tries to get some traction going. At first, and for most of last year,it was ignored by the larger MSM media -so how come this got all this traction now? And why won't it, for the love of God, die?

This controversy won't die because the MSM is as much a part of corporate America as lobbyist are and corporate America does not want this negro anywhere near the White House. You all saw the shameful performances of ABC Clinton shills at the debates and wasn't it here that I was seeing CNN refered to as the Clinton News Network? Sen. Obama is running on a platform of taking their ball away. Of course they are going to throw as much dirt and ish up on him as they can.

Enter Hannity's Rev. Wright tapes -it may not be as good a scandal as the proverbial "dead hooker or live boy" but at this stage in the game it will have to do.

They are trying to hamstring him before it goes to convention. If they can do it now, during the season of primaries and caucus, they can use the "will of the voters" as cover. If they don't stop him now, they will have to do it at convention out in the open in front of everybody - and of course we've all vowed to watch that convention carefully.

This Wright controversy is not dying, it won't go away unless they can come up with something bigger and better. Some will ride this dead horse all the way to the convention, others will be riding it all the way to the damn election in November.

For sweet mercy's sake - someone call the ASPCA already.

Is this the part where someone declares that it's not "fair" to put the accused's my space link up and that we "don't know him" and we only "know what the police and media tell us" as though the vast recources of law enforcement and the media have joined forces for the sole purpose of railroading the accused? Do you think today's results are a good predictor of the political importance (or lack thereof) of the regular democratic organizations (ward orgs / "the machine")? If State Rep Fritchey looses and from what I understand he has the vast majority of organizational support-- doesn't that imply that none of the ward orgs were successful in dragging out their pluses? Conversely, if he wins - the ground game has to get a ton of credit, because nobody (besides russ stewart) is talking about him pulling this off.

- Because Feigenholtz was not a down-the-ticket candidate. The only-female-in-the-race, vote splitting, etc. only work effectively when people are not familiar with the candidates. In this race I think they were extremely important. With a compressed cycle & not a ton of mainstream press, I think it provided some good research to push voters over the edge.

I think ward organizations influence is inversely proportional to:
- The number of voters who were raised in the suburbs, but now live in the city.
They are very simply not used to being pushed to vote a certain way -- they think it is offensive.
- Higher Education. This is a very simple generalization, however, if you look at the neighborhoods were the machine was not successful they are nicely matched with 'hot' or gentrifying areas, i.e. 'newcomers' buying 500K houses.

I don't think the caps are a bad idea when used to limit influence. However, I agree with Rich that they can (and are) easily be circumvented. The concept that it will be easier for challengers to mount an effective campaign against an incumbent if we limit contributions is patently false and an old wives tale that losers tell to justify their poor showing at the polls. The vast majority of challengers (in my very limited experience) don't understand the project they are undertaking when running for office. They decide to run right before they start gathering petitions. They don't understand that they have skipped the strategic and planning phase of the campaign and jumped straight to execution.
The process is self-selecting. Serious candidates who understand what it takes, run when the odds of them winning are increased -- i.e. scandal or open seat. Imposing a fund raising cap, can't help a candidate who doesn't understand the problem they are trying to solve.

I hope you are joking. If so -- good one. Getting on the ballot requires the ability to read -- nothing more nothing less. If you can't get on the ballot - I don't want you writing legislation (or in il -- agreeing to mm's legislation).

Oooops ... I was too quick on that one. If you are a third party candidate or if you want to be the mayor of chicago, I think it might be hard to get on the ballot due to the excessive number of signatures required.

I am sorry. I was a little too quick and I didn't think beyond the cases I have personally witnessed. The number of signatures required for independents & third-party candidates are waaaaaaaay too high. And I am sure there are plenty of cases where "well funded legal teams make random frivolous challenges ... ". However, I am amazed when I see somebody running for a very local office collecting signatures at a grocery store OR when their petition sheet doesn't have the required language.

there are a lot of circumstances taht would really make you jaded. na kahit minsan di naman natin ginusto mangyari, nagkakataon lang na sadyang nakakatakot na ang mga susunod na pangyayari.

ako naman di suicidal. masokista lang. ayoko pa mamatay, but for a time i loved the feeling of getting hurt -- emotionally and physically. i loved self inflicted pain. haha!

hahaha. this is sooo funny. i have experiences like these din lalo na when i was practicing HR (general) pa. madami din ako funny stories lalo na sa training, mejo mainitin kase ulo ko kapag shungaks ang kausap ko. hehee.

kaya eto, i let go of my HR career. right now im into Recruitment na lang, specifically Technical Recruitment. ayun, ganun pa din.. madami pa din funny na pangyayari. hindi naman sa minamaliit ko ang mga teknikal na tao, pero karamihan sa kanila di masyado magaling magsalita kase sobrang galing nila sa hands on at mga makina at computer na lagi ang kausap nila. so ayun.. minsan nasa valenzuela iniisip ko, yung intindi nya pala eh alabang. hehee. parang ganun. :) pero madami din naman magaling magsalita. ayun ang jackpot! hehehehe! :)
