His response was every single one. Every chance you get to enhance your online profile and connect with customers is crucial to developing whatever your business is.

I couldn't agree more. Even if your business isn't online I'm sure your looking for more customers. All of these social networks that are out there provide huge opportunities to find these customers. You just have to spend the time to figure the stuff out but its that extra effort that separates the winners from the losers.

Jared
@jotoole4

Re: If you blog it they will come

I used to blog everyday, there was definitely a decrease in my quality but an increase in traffic. I watched a speech Gary Vaynerchuk gave from Wine Library TV. He said he gets asked a lot about what social networking platforms should be used and his response is every single one. Every platform gives you another opportunity to connect in some way with your customers which is what drives business. So twitter is just another platform that everyone should look to use because it is another way to stay in touch with customers.

Jared
@jotoole4

Re: Syndicating your content isn’t hard to do, but you need to.

Syndication is so key to making something successful on today's web. Most people don't have the time to click through to every blog or page where they look for information. I mean I am subscribed to over 100blogs on my google reader. It would take forever to load each blog and see what they are talking about. This way I can just scan everything and if you are writing useful, interesting stuff your blog moves towards the top of the ones I regularly checkout.

It's all about time and how easy you make it for people to see what your doing.

Re: Traveling Online: Making Your Destination More Interactive

Could be a big opportunity for people who are experts on certain places to blog and build communities around them. The important part is to follow and try to be followed by the right people. It takes time, don't just mass follow everyone because besides being bad for the site your page will just be filled with tweets you have no interest in.
Things I have found it most useful for are hearing about live interviews online or tv, new sites, thought provoking questions, and just building relationships with fellow entrepreneurs.

Re: LucidNYC: The All-Star Game for Mathletes

I don't know what venues are being used but why so expensive for 40-70 people. Before you start anything research is needed because you have to do know who your competitors are. But you have to just start it. This is how you learn and get feedback. It's also easier to approach investors if you have something up and running with some results. It can just be a beta version but to be able to show some actaul interest goes along way.

Also I have had some experience with investors and they have never wanted a business plan. I have actually been thanked for sending them my 2 page executive summary. Focus on writing that and then down the line develop the business plan once you have feedback and a clearer direction of where your going.

Re: Facebook's 5th Birthday, 18 Interesting Statistics, and the other 3 Co-Founders

%70 of users are outside the US. But with a little explanation start to get involved and can see the benefit. However the most important part is giving these people a long-term plan. Anyone will jump on twitter and play with it for 2weeks and be done for 2months. However if I give them a strategy and show them how to tie their business/life into it they tend to stay involved. The mind-set is whats in it for them. So you have to lay it out in the simplest yet detailed plans to show them ROI.

Re: How to Buy Domain Names Like a Pro: 10 Tips from the Founder of PhoneTag.com

Great tips my biggest problem has always been finding out who actually owns the domain. I think the office environment always creates a kind of stuffy and stiffer atmosphere. I think having "gatherings" outside in more informal settings makes for much better conversation. I think if more people did this a lot more would get done and creativity would appear more often.

I think another great spot for informal communication is twitter. It may not be effective in really organizing a conversation but everybody is equal. There aren't rankings that allow certain posts or thoughts to be at the top. Everybody sees everything on an equal level which I think helps people express their thoughts and ideas better.

Jared
my twitter account - jotoole4

Re: I Hate Business Plans

I'm a little late but ill answer anyway...

I hate business plans but I love business planning because....its gives me goals and motivation. Many companies still don't know what a blog is let alone twitter.

However I don't see this as all just fading away. This technology (blogging, social media) is all relatively new. Companies always react slower then just about everything else in the world. Over time though they will find ways to harness this information and improve their brands. They will connect with customers via all these outlets. There is a ton of opportunity its just slow to diffuse into corporations.

Re: Toilet Paper When You Need It Most

I think Ricardo already hit on the best part

‘If what you want to do does not become part of you, you may not be as successful as you planned to be.’

You have to love what you do. It's amazing how far behind corporations are when it comes to customer inter-action. You would never see something like that from small business owners. Corporations just think they can do whatever they want. I have tons of ideas and opinions everyday. However I used to pick and choose which ones I talk about and even those I would over analyze what I wrote to make sure it was "good enough".

Now I have begun to just write what I think and leave it at that. No need for perfect organization or perfect grammar. Marketing won't work in small towns where people aren't connected or as Chris said everybody already knows you.

Use it to connect with small businesses in similar situations or your target audience (food lovers) not for new customers but for ideas. Or find that small deli in NYC that has leveraged social media to create tons of press and customers. Connect with them and see if they have some interesting techniques that could help you get some business over that other local deli.

Finaly use it to brand yourself as an expert in your field. If enough people follow you and respect you the opportunities for bigger and better things are endless.

Re: A Crash Course in Comments

I tend to end each post I make with a question the reader. As I am starting my own business and looking into ad options I find myself constantly monitoring data. What ads get clicks which ones don't. Then trying to figure out why and replace the ones that don't get clicked with ones I think will get clicked.

It's all based around who your target market is and what they actually want to see. People in general hate advertising but I feel that just because they have been bombarded with un-targeted ads for so long. If you put stuff in front of them that they can find useful they will see your ads as adding to the content available on your site.

Re: Marketing in a recession

I could not agree more.

The economy right now has thrown people out of their comfort zone. And as with any tool you have figure out how you want to use it. This involves a plan. Now it doesn't have to be to serious and you can have fun to but there should be goals and you should have a way to measure the results. Maybe clicks to your site from your twitter profile (not from pitching yourself but from networking and people just being interested).

Re: Virtual Assistant Resources and Directories

VA's are a great resource. You need to show me why I need you and not the next guy.

It's really easy to find 100 articles on how to use twitter but to find one that actually inspires me get out there and do it right is the 1 that wins.

Re: What the new facebook layout means to you.

Hey Brian, came across your blog on Twitter.

I like your point about how people who are complaining don't really know what they are complaining about. They are only complaining because its different and everybody always resists to change at first. In the end they will continue to use facebook and I would bet if in a year the old facebook came back there would be tons of complaints about that platform just because it was once again change.

Facebook made a good move though, I like the new platform.

Jared
@jotoole4

Re: Radar for September 26th 2008

I love tweetdeck. Really helps to manage everything going on in twitter. I think the best part is opening a few searches and monitoring a specific topic for awhile.
