Unemployment compensation should not be taxed.

Businesses will have an easier time obtaining loans and investments for hiring workers, research and development, and plant and equipment. People and businesses will have more money to spend. Middle class people and union members who have mutual funds would benefit from dividends and capital gains not being taxed.

If Mexico is able to spend less money fighting violent crime and is able to spend more money on its economy, its economy may grow a lot. If Mexico's economy grows a lot, fewer illegal immigrants may come to the United States of America, many illegal immigrants may leave the United States of America, and many more Mexicans may be able to buy products and services from the United States of America. If State governments are able to spend less money on illegal immigrants and non violent drug offenders, they may be able to reduce their sales taxes.

It seems in this culture that too many citizens want concrete solutions to financial woes. If guarantees were demanded for every proposal, nothing would get accomplished. The field of economics is an area where I am admittedly weak and rudimentary, and I have a hard time trudging through Smith, Keynes, Galbraith, or Friedman with any zeal. (Ayn Rand provides lots of comic relief.) The tentative tone in your words commands respect. I always believed that if one proposal doesn't work, then try another...the plan B syndrome.

If bus service and passenger rail improve, fewer families may need to have 2nd cars and 3rd cars allowing them to have more money for things not related to transportation. The air may be cleaner and fewer children may be harmed by asthma attacks and fewer parents may lose time from work to take care of sick children. We may be able to use a lot less foreign oil and spend less money on the military.

Our national debt is now more than 10 trillion dollars. Many people are discussing increasing it by several trillion dollars more. High deficits may lead to very high inflation which is especially harmful to people on fixed incomes and people who have saved money. The national debt was less than 1 trillion dollars when former President Reagan took office on January 20, 1981. The national debt soared under Reagan, Bush, and W. Republican members of Congress and Democrat members of Congress along with Reagan, Bush, and W caused the national debt to soar.
Cal, you might want to read the Constitution before you comment on it again. Article 1, Section 8 "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common defense and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Impost and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States." provide for the general Welfare means whatever Congress thinks it means.
The federal government should sell a lot of the land it owns to raise capital, reduce the national debt, improve infrastructure, help fund passenger rail, help fund buses within cities, help fund buses between cities, help fund energy transmission, help fund energy development, and do other things. Some of the money the federal government obtains from the sale of the lands should go to State governments. If you type federal government owned land on a search engine, you might be surprised at how much land the federal government owns.

If the capital gains tax is not indexed for inflation, people may pay the capital gains tax when they have actually lost money because of inflation.

in Booze or drugs, prohibition is senseless on Nashua Telegraph
Marijuana, heroin, and cocaine should be legalized, regulated, and taxed for people who are least 18 years old for medical reasons and non medical reasons. Violent criminal gangs that are causing a lot of harm in our country, Mexico, and Colombia may obtain less money from the sale of their drugs. Terrorists in Afghanistan would probably obtain less money from their opium to use to kill our soldiers. Some of the money obtained from taxing drugs should be used for drug rehab programs. Fewer children and police officers might die because of fights dealing with drug territories.
If we do not legalize drugs, we should expect the problems that Mexico is experiencing now to happen in our country often.
If they are regulated, they may be safer to use. If you buy them illegally, you may not be sure what you are actually buying and the strength of it. Safer drugs may reduce deaths caused by drugs.

Passenger rail *could* be done with electrically-driven trains. The technology exists, and has been in use for at least 75 years.
All we lack is the desire to do it, and the acknowledgement that the days of easy, cheap, petroleum-based air travel are nearing an end.
Personally, I'm looking forward to the Nashua-Boston commuter rail link. I'd be willing to bet that ridership will be higher than any existing estimates.

Homosexuals should be allowed to marry people of the same gender. Not allowing this is discrimination. It was discrimination when blacks were not allowed to marry whites.
I realize homosexuals have served in the military . Do you know what the word EASIER MEANS? Homosexuals should be allowed to say they are homosexual and serve in the military. When they are found to be homosexual, they should not be kicked out. We should want to have the best people defending our country. Homosexuals are being treated as second class citizens and this is wrong. How would you like to be forced to hide who you are to defend your country?

Some government programs discourage marriage which is stupid.

Kenneth, tell me what the difference to you is between a Civil Union that gives one the same priviledges as a married couple. (note I don't say married hetero or homo couple as by definition marriage only applies to a hetero couple)???

If I were you, I'd be more worried about the poor women from abroad who meet and marry an American man and move here to the U.S. legally and apply for citizenship legally only to be shunned by our government when the man passes away unexpectedly and thus can't attend a meeting to verify the marriage wasn't a marriage of convenience.
Laws are based on current morals.... how do you intend to change what people think???

Binding arbitration agreements that many brokers, health insurance companies, and others require people to sign are not constitutional (legal) "where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars". A person may not be asked to give up the right to sue UNTIL AFTER they have been harmed. A person may not be asked to give up the right to sue before they have been harmed.

In all other amendments where "the people" appears, the meaning is
taken to mean "individuals". In the 4th Amendment, we read "the
people" to mean individuals "to be secure in their homes. In 1st

I think everyone is too caught up in the details of this issue than to focus on the actual problem... why can a simple majority of California residents pass a constitutional amendment? That is something the people of California should really think long and hard about, and it the true travesty exposed.

It's true... every single state. I just looked it up. There isn't a single state that forbids homosexuals from getting married.

Some of the questions and answers need to be worded better. I think the answer for 33 should be - If spending is not more than the amount of money taken in from taxes, you have a balanced budget or zero deficit. If spending is less than money taken from taxation, you have a surplus.
The other 2 I got wrong I see why they think that way.
Some of the answers are in the Constitution.

The federal government could allow people to contribute money to a Congressional "Election Campaign" fund on their federal income tax forms like they may to the "Presidential Election Campaign" fund. A person could be allowed to contribute up to $10 on the income tax form.
One of the best ways to "petition the Government for a redress of grievances" (Amendment One) is to make contributions to political campaigns. A person should be allowed to contribute as much money to a candidate as the person wants and to as many candidates as the person wants as long as disclosure takes place. If a person wants to contribute millions of dollars each to several candidates, let the person do it. This will allow candidates to raise money from fewer donors and be better able to compete against elected officials. This may be the only way for lesser known parties to compete against Republicans and Democrats. The more parties our country has the better the issues may be discussed.
People may want to support a Term Limits Amendment to the United States Constitution that would say that a person may not serve more than 8 years as a Representative to the United States House of Representatives and not more than 12 years as a United States Senator. The Republican party needs to care a lot more about the Bill of Rights. Republicans in Congress should not have been acting like puppets and took President Bush on when he was attacking the Bill of Rights.
Members of Congress especially United States Senators should realize that members of Congress are supposed to be negotiating trade agreements with "foreign Nations" and not the President because of Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.
The Republican party needs to have Presidential campaigns that deal more with hope than fear. Discuss fear but not more than hope.
The Republican party should be discussing how the federal government should cause less harm and how government programs should be reformed or eliminated.
The Repubican party should make the economy - creating wealth - the first or second most important issue in a campaign. How to reduce poverty and increase the wealth of poor people, the middle class, and the wealthy needs to be discussed by them.

in Innovation driving mass transit plans on Nashua Telegraph
If New Hampshire spends some of the money it obtains from the rooms and meals tax on buses within cities and buses between cities, it might increase tourism. If more people are able to get to jobs and from jobs via buses, New Hampshire may be able to spend less money on food stamps and Medicaid. There is a lot of advertising space inside of Manchester Transit Authority buses which might help increase sales of many businesses. More enclosed bus benches could be in Manchester that have advertising on them. If New Hampshire spends more money on buses, the air may be cleaner and children and others who have asthma may spend less time in emergency rooms. If families have less need for 2nd and 3rd cars, they may have more money to spend in New Hampshire's restaurants and stores.
Hopefully, someday there will be passenger rail between Canada and Boston. New Hampshire should see if Canadian businesses and Canadian governments would be willing to help fund passenger rail between Canada and Boston. Canadian businesses and other businesses could advertise inside of the trains. More Americans might visit Canada and more Canadians might visit New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Canada's economy is likely to do very well in the future because of its natural resources. Many more people who live in New Hampshire may want to work in Canada.
Boston Express should have at least 1 bus trip from Boston to Manchester after 7pm so people who work in Boston are able to get back to Manchester if they get out of work at 5pm. The Department of Transportation should have negotiated a better contract for Manchester and New Hampshire. The same level of bus service between Manchester and Boston and Boston and Manchester should have been kept. Better bus service may make Manchester Airport even more important to New Hampshire's economy.
State government needs to care more about transportation needs in northen New Hampshire and not just be thinking about transportation needs in southern New Hampshire.
New Hampshire's government should be doing a lot more to promote tourism to New Hampshire by having on state government websites and other websites video and audio of State Parks, other places, and possibly inns and restaurants. Testimonials from customers may be very beneficial.
Hopefully, someday there will be passenger rail between Canada and Boston. New Hampshire should see if Canadian businesses and Canadian governments would be willing to help fund passenger rail between Canada and Boston. Canadian businesses and other businesses could advertise inside of the trains. More Americans might visit Canada and more Canadians might visit New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Canada's economy is likely to do very well in the future because of its natural resources. Many more people who live in New Hampshire may want to work in Canada.
Boston Express should have at least 1 bus trip from Boston to Manchester after 7pm so people who work in Boston are able to get back to Manchester if they get out of work at 5pm. The Department of Transportation should have negotiated a better contract for Manchester and New Hampshire. The same level of bus service between Manchester and Boston and Boston and Manchester should have been kept. Better bus service may make Manchester Airport even more important to New Hampshire's economy.

To raise capital, reduce the national debt, help fund Social Security and Medicare, and do other things, the federal government should sell a lot of the land that it owns. If you type federal government owned land on a search engine, you might be surprised at how much land the federal government owns. Some of the money the federal government obtains from the sale of the land should go to state governments.
If the federal government wants to encourage Americans and foreigners to invest in our businesses and banks, the capital gains tax should be eliminated. The federal government should also stop taxing interest from savings accounts and dividends. The national sales tax would take in some of the money being earned in our underground economy. If our country had learned from the Savings and Loans Crisis, the mortgage mess would not exist now. If Congress had properly regulated financial institutions, the mortgage mess would not exist now.
Voters, non voters, Democrat elected leaders, Republican elected leaders, the Federal Reserve, financial institutions that did not care about sound financial strategies, financial institutions that committed fraud, borrowers who did not understand basic finance, and borrowers who committed fraud caused the mortgage mess.
The taxpayers are taking on significant risk and stock warrants are not good enough. The federal government should be getting some of the lands and buildings the financial institutions themselves own and the federal government should be able to sell these lands and buildings when the federal government wants to.
The federal government is helping to save many of these companies and because of this Congress should pass a law that says that if the federal government bails out a financial institution the federal government should receive a percentage of its future dividends it pays to its shareholders, a percentage of its future sales, a percentage of its future profits, and a percentage of its future executive pay. These companies need to be punished for being stupid and taxpayers need to have a chance at making some profits long term.
The plan would be more effective if the capital gains tax is eliminated encouraging more Americans and foreigners to invest in our businesses and banks. The plan would be more effective if interest from savings accounts and dividends are not taxed by the federal government.
