#1 simple tip has to be to join/create a "network" and cross link between related sites. Comment on other (popular) people's blogs and sites - they will cross post in time if you have some decent content.
Similar to the post i read on YGG the other day about getting "Dugg" but with no obvious "network".
I'd do it myself if a) I had some decent content and b) I could be bothered...

I ain't no marketer, but here is my contribution. ;)
Rightly or wrongly, people like their lives to be narrated. Marketing provides that narration and puts products into people's lives.

ah but is it them?
I refer to several articles I have read recently regarding people being paid to maintain an individual's web persona.
Can't cite any references right now though...

Wouldn't bother with Freakonomics. Blink and Tipping Point are good, but not much depth. Seth Godin is great.
I'd also recommend "Fooled by randomness" and "Black swan" but perhaps they are on a slightly different subject...
If you're at home and looking for something to watch instead - anything over at http://www.tedtalks.com is worth your time.
