I'm just curious -- is it worthwhile to do all this work for static files when you could just set the expiration date way in the future and try to only serve those files once?

in I want to public domain my RAW photo files on Scobleizer
Before you worry about size and storage you need to worry about sharing RAW. The file format is too specific for this purpose. Step 1should be to convert them to DNG. Lightroom makes this a breeze.

Note, I don't use DNG because I don't share RAW files. But sharing is one of the use cases where DNG is absolutely critical.

By the way, I'm glad you finally "outed" me! I was going to start to complain about lacking a link back and giving some blog-cred pagerank-love my way. :-)

By the way -- I'm not giving up that easy on getting you over on a Mac. That was just the first attempt to move the needle.

And -- I'm still pondering if I really think it's a good thing that I introduced you to the Scorpions. I'm pretty hot/cold on that one. :-)

hadar Well, if anyone has a chance of convincing me to move to a Mac, it will be you. Though, like you said, your needle movement barely registered at our last dinner. ;-)

in Lost - Seasons 1 and 2 on DVD on Random Musings
Okay -- I have sort of on purpose avoided watching Lost. Some good reasons, some bad. For some reason the show put me off from the very beginning. I've never seen an episode.

But, reading your writeup makes me want to go buy Season 1 on iTunes and sit down in front of Apple TV. Tempting... thanks for sharing.

hadar It's definitely worth it, but, you want to push through the first four episodes in a block, and by then, you'll be hooked. Come back and share your thoughts if you do it. :-)

Dude! That shirt is totally cool. I saw it and heard about it for the first time on Scoble's blog (there I go admitting to reading Scoble again, ugh).

[can you believe he puts the sponsored in the URL too.. wow]

Cool t-shirt. I hope to see it the next time we have dinner. I'll wear my Twitter t-shirt.

hadar Well, I haven't "sold out" yet, having zero ads in my blog. I guess once you start, it's hard to stop, so having a "sponsor" in the URL is just another step in the progression of cashing in. More power to him! ;-)

I'm reading this on my iPhone stuck for 90 minutes on the tarmac trying to fly out of La Guardia. Ugh!

in Grado vs Bose Quiet Comfort 2 on Random Musings
The other thing I've read about on the NC stuff is there is some listener dependency. Just like certain projectors and some people see the "rainbow" effect and others don't. Some people have ears that are more sensitive to the pressure, etc.

Jealous. Downside of the super custom theme with dozen plugins. I'm being careful and waiting before upgrading to 2.3. Also going to move hosting providers at the same time.

Okay -- first off -- I'm commenting on your blog from your living room. This is wierd. :-)

The scale issues I guessed at were very true. Twitter has grown like nothing else, and the Rails framework under it has shown some stress. It's famously been debated in public on various blogs. It started with a comment from one of the Twitter guys and then responded to by David Hanssen on his site.

It's been an interesting debate to watch, just in that it shows some of the stresses with scaling open source stuff. You are on your own ultimately.

in XM Radio on Random Musings
Wow! I'm kind of surprised that you like XM Hadar. We had it in our new Honda Odyssey and they gave me a great deal to keep it for a year. I decided to go with it "just cuz". I never found the programming to be to our liking.

When I tried to cancel the service XM quickly ratcheted up a number of reasons why I wouldn't use their service. They employ every sleazy tactic AOL ever dreamed up to try to keep me from canceling the service. Ugh.

Winnipeg Folk Festival. It's three great days outside in nature surrounded by fun people and great, varied music.

It would be a real culture shock from the east coast, but you guys may like it. :-)
