in Do Social Networks Follow the Traditional Business Cycle on Social Times
Growth doesn't come to a complete stop once we're past the initial spike. Take even an old line business such as IBM - which is as mature as they get... its still growing. I think you may be confusing growth with subscriber numbers. Or maybe I am.

"suggesting that a community will grow indefinitely is absolutely ridiculous" - ergo Wall Street and entire tech industry is absolutely ridiculous.

in Publish Your Blog to Twitter on Oracle AppsLab
just read the last two sections. details of next releases of SAP Collaboration Server, and a writeup of a "packaged M&A scenario" which looks at enterprise data, and imports from orkut. the blog itself has some nice touches of humour if i do say so myself, but not enough to draw you in/keep you interested evidently.

in Will Europe Follow Our Bad Example on Patents? on The Technology Liberation Front
fucking hell. because the Japanese economy has been performing so brilliantly this last 15 years. the EU is so dumb sometimes. i like your argument. better go read the whole piece.

in Framing the DRM Debate on The Technology Liberation Front
I frame DRM as digital lard. it clogs up the arteries of high value digital lives. why would you eat lard by choice, and become far less healthy in the process. DRM = digital lard

in Of course data security is (NOT) important in the US on Newest Industry
actually its funny - i envy some US laws, notably around notification. any company that wants to trade in California needs to be careful about customer data, because they have to let people know. a lot of this leakage goes on - often because of what i call information bulimia- they hoover up so much info its bound to puke out sometime.

in Software Patent of the Week: A Poster Child for KSR on The Technology Liberation Front
The broader context is exactly what you fail to offer.

IBM explicitly created the PC clone industry, with a licensing-based approach, so the revisionism is a bit jarring here. I am no fan of patent abuse (or software patents generally) but given IBM already saw an industry of clones (called plug compatible mainframes)- Amdahl, HDS, Comparex and so on - as forced by the consent decree, this blog entry just seems to be to lacking in context to take seriously.

IBM is a very interesting case study in terms of its approaches to IP, patent law and so on. Why not engage with the history to make more compelling analysis?

media outlet? but we're a "respected industry analyst firm"... ;-)

next week is cool. another question - have you looked at the IBM models for insurance industry, driven through the information management group, rather than the WebSphere folks?

it would be great to know more about the problems with WPS. would it be possible to spend some time on the phone about this?

in Industry Analysts: The Beasts Within The Necessary Evil on Newest Industry

eroded and coroded? i would say improved and made leaner... blogs are a great tool for analysts and their customers. blogs help make smarter conversations.

didn't you brief this person *before* the consultation?

Its all about the cluetrain and multiple conversations. Does RedMonk have some things we return to in consultations? Sure. Any analyst has a story to tell, same as an vendor should.

I dunno. i am a bit tired after last nights redeye.

But just because one analyst sucked doesn't mean we all do.

Hasn't anyone give you a powerbook yet>?

are you sure you want this job? wouldn't you rather build something? See my C++ blog today - Flickr and bloglines are both hiring.

Google is the poster child - and it has the deepest pockets. Enjoy those lawsuits Evil Twins. this is potentially somewhat like the SCO case, isn't it? but google is in no position to indemnify anyone. will we see RIAA style cease and desist letters send to all aggregators? probably. we should probably just ignore them - the judge wont throw us into jail if recent RIAA failures are anything to go by
