I live in NY metro so I see themboth alot and like them both. I give the nod to Wright based on 3 things:
1. More recruiting range ( NY metro, Philly, Balt/Wash )
2. Cleaned up Nova from NCAA violations ( meetigns w NBA players etc )
3. Knows 3 guard offense

Villanova won't let Wright go. He's very happy there, and they're very happy with him. He basically can be at Nova until he retires.

Taking this commentary at face value then clearly what Ellis needs right now is for us "stick with him". I for one donot like trashing any 20+ yr old player for immaturity or bad judgement. Perhaps he did not have many positive role models early in life , I don't know.
He got his "tough love" from DD now we too need to move on. He needs and deserves to be forgiven and supported by us ............da fans.
At times this year ( ie first Iowa game ) he took the game over w defense, rebounds , loose balls and assists. I don't even mind his shots . We need another scorer and he can only learn that by ..........guess...........shooting.

I agree. I don't think Ellis' shot selection is bad at all. When he does take a bad shot it's usually on a drive where he's either caught with no one to pass to (it happens to everyone...see Bassett and EJ) or late in the shot-clock. He and Stemler are the only ones that routinely give up open looks at the three-pointer early in the shot-clock to reset the offense and try to get a better look (or if there is no one to rebound).
Ellis is also a solid contributor with rebounding and defense. IU is better with Ellis on the floor. This situation, like so many others this year, is disappointing, but you're right, we have to stay behind this team because they need the support now more than ever. This may be particularly true for Ellis.

I loved Ellis early on and wished he was only a freshman so we could have 3 more years with him. He makes the players around him better and is unselfish as hell doing whatever is needed to get the W....Having said that SH&% HAPPENS.....If you make it to the NBA how many coaches r u going to go thru in your career 4-5-6 (that's alot of initials to write on your shoes)...Please Ellis I don't need you, but your teamates do IU needs you....Be pissed at Greenspan hell egg his house, tp his yard, put a potato in his tailpipe if your inmature and pissed, if not get back on the court and be there for your boys...finish strong...who knows you may like TONY BENNETT as your next coach, just don't count on him calling you as often as your homie did.....PEACE MAN UP

Interesting comparison but Wade had natural point guard skills.
I think if we were having beers together I would have used Ben Gordon as the comparison however. Good shot, drives but could not pass until UCONN had injuries and forced him to develop skills at the point. His development at point was rapid and he single handedly won the big east tournament his last year at that position.........................never to return to it however but the experience enhanced his game. It would be good for EJ too

I can see the Ben Gordon comparisons too...I just think EJ has D-Wade's speed and power going to the rack. EJ has more range than Wade, his range is comparible to that of B. Gordon. It sounds like he's actually a gentle mix of both.

Of course I am joking.
I was commenting on Ben's "Pitino" chant and offering other bottom of the barrel choices ..........glad to see you guys know the bottom of the barrel when you see it.
During the NCAA mess w KS I reviewed all the listed sanctions on the NCAA website. I saw Majerus etc and a Nova sanction in early 2000's but nothing on Wright. The Nova isssue was for bringing recruits to the NBA locker room and introducing to coaches and players of the '76ers. I could have missed something however.

you might have missed it because there were no actual NCAA penalities.
half the team was suspended for their part in a phone card scandal in 2003. im sketchy on the details but i think it was kind of an oblivious move by wright. the reason why im against hiring him is because IU needs to go with someone that is the squeakiest of squeaky clean.
i dont even want a head coach that has had a parking ticket before, much less an actual scandal.

If you want to add an additional coach not often mentioned here add Paul Hewitt or Leonard Hamilton at least. Not my favorites but who knows.
In the BIG EAST the only coach who is proven, youngish, and maybe willing to take on the B10 is Jay Wright who I would love to see at IU. Keep in mind he had to clean up Nova from NCAA violations as well.

As for Jay Wright, he cleaned up his own mess at Nova. The phone card scandal was under his watch.

I am just saying as a strategy for delaying a recruit's decision to go somewhere else IU should announce or leak a timetable they can live with about when a new coach or a short list will be communicated. Then the guys may wait to find out.
As it is rightnow the uncertainty has got to be killing them and they are under pressure to renounce IU before a new coach is named

IU announced they would have closure on KS in a week , that was of course before the season was over. That to me was really dumb.
BUT
What do you guys think of IU setting a "leaked to the media" timetable for announcing a new coach or a at least announcing a short list. This may cause a "double clutch" by recruits as their curiosity grabs ahold.
Lets face it. The new coach is going to come immediately with alot of PR and excitement..........unless ..............its a no name.

ND's early football signees were in constant contact with one another throughout the season. Certain people developed into psuedo-program contacts and may be one reason why nearly the entire class stuck together despite ND's dismal performance on the field. So, with that precedent, I would say that IU's current b-ball recruits can (and should) be banding together and continuing to "recruit" each other, if for nothing else that to begin developing a relationship prior to becoming teammates.
Matt J.
Nope, they are simply recruits. They are allowed to text, call, and talk to one another as many times as they want a day. There are no rules about recruits talking to other recruited (and signed) players.

I really like Crawford too. He has good body control, seems to try to do what he is asked to do and best of all he has that Magic Johnson "half smirk half smile" when he makes a play either a good one or a bad one. He CARES !
I keep suspecting his flair for the game could bloom into something very entertaining. Maybe even as good as Tom Coverdale .

Gordon will be just fine in the NBA. He will in my estimation be a Ben Gordon typwype of player from the Bulls. I really believe the wrist has hampered him more than he lets on. I know the turnovers frustrate us, but we wouldn't be near as good without him and DJ should give him a big kiss, because he has helped raise his draft status. I blame IU's coaching staff and lack of offensive scheme. It's as if they tell him to just shoot it and that's our offense. If Gordon got his points within a good offensive set he would drop his turnovers in half and boost his scoring and shooting percentage.. He will be fine in the NBA. You never know he may like the new coach if we hire one b4 he has to declare for the draft....Gordon may have slipped in the draft and that could get him s to stay so he can go number 1 next year....ya never know

2. If you think changes then what would they be ?

Everybody's made good points with which I agree. It would be interesting however to see these analystical stats applied to all possible high draft choices at the guard position and not just these 2 freshmen. If I were a GM and knowing this is a business first and foremost I would not be looking for a project but rather a more proven guy with more game NOW.
As for freshmen I would like to see the same stats for Jerryd Bayless who CAN and DOES take over games. I only saw him twice on tv but each time he scored 30+ with nearly double figures in asst's, rebs and several steals.

As would I but NBA GM's dont't think like that anymore. The draft is all about what the player might do in a couple years. It's changed the past 10 years since highschoolers started comingin so much more. They don't have to have such a standout year or years to get a high draft selection like they used to. They just have to see that the player seems like he will be able to learn and grow well.

I almost put more evaluation into a coach based on his conference tournament record. Most likely you're playing a team you've already seen twice that year, and for the coaches you see that team twice a year for who knows how long.
If you're consistently losing in the conference tourney I question your X and O skills and ability a as a game coach. Although it is worrisome if a coach is losing to lower seeds in the NCAA's quite often.
That's interesting about Grant, how long has he been the coach there? Also adds to my suggestion that it would be cool to have an entry somewhere that follow these coaches teams throughout there tournament.

You are right. At the time I was thinking the same thing.
Now I see it as a peak and we are back to winning or losing to inferior talent in close contests. We always seem to be one EJ turnover or one EJ 3 pt shot away from several wins. We have put an unfair burden on him based on his experience and his game.
That burden is rightfully DJ's and sometimes Bassett

So how to correct some flaws ?
1. Gordon plays point and brings the ball up court ( helps him in the pros ) his role is to get 12 pts , 6 on fouls and no to's
2. Bassett and Crawford share Gordons former role ( driving to lane )because
- Bassett has midrange and dishes unlike Gordon
- Crawford has midrange and would like to dish....I think
3. If we do 2 then Taber learns a 12 ft pop about 4 times /game
4. If 2 & 3 above then I beleive DJ goes for 30 pts
5. When in a zone then trap at midcourt 1/3 of the trips

Why don't you go be coach Jerry. You write it down like it so simple. Just let Gordon play point, teach Taber a 12 ft jumper, and have Crawford and Bassett take over Gordon's role. What are you talking about. I don't mind seeing Gordon play point but there is no way in hell he will have 0 turnovers and why would you want him scoring only 12/gm. He averages over 21 points a contest. Also no one else on this team has the driving ability of Gordon. He gets to the line more than anyone in the NCAA behind Tyler Hansborough. This would cut a substantial amount of points from the team. You can't just teach someone like Kyle Taber to suddenly drain 12 footers. You don't think they've been working on that all year Jerry. He can't make them. Thats obvious cause he never shoots them. Taber's role is to hustle down low and do the grunt work not pop 12 foot jumpers. Not sure how Bassett and Crawford driving the lane and Taber hitting jumpers is going to give DJ 30 pts a contest. I love the Kindergarten logic but get it the f*** out of here! This is ITH.

Listen ! There is no team in the country that hasn't had more than 1 bad game. Most of us should have adjusted our expectations for this team a long time ago.
I donot really see a downward trend in our play. What I see is NO PROGRESS stuck in neutral, while others have gotten better. We have the same flaws as a team we all saw early in the season but did not want to acknowledge.
1. no purpose or dishing on Gordon drives leading to to's
2. no offensive purposeful movement thus diminishing DJ and Bassett and others
3. no stopping D
4. no "come from behind" aggressive trapping D
5. weak out of bounds sets
6. limited player rotation leading to uneven intensity in effort
......and everyone has more
The flaws have been like a chant on this site the entire B10 season and NOW we have a trend ? We have new flaws ? Come on . DD is NOT the flaw, maybe not the answer either however

You make some great points Jerry, and I agree those flaws have been there all year.
I think why people are so upset is that, whether it was rallying around Samson or whatever, for about 4-5 games (probably the roughest part of the schedule) the team seemed to have turned the corner culminating in the Purdue win. They went 3-1 with the only loss on a lucky three to Wisconsin, and the team was starting to look better and clean up some of those flaws.
But, It seems that once KS left, all that momentum left with him.

Mike : I agree w you. We moved the ball on the zone and had open 3's. We locked down Battle on D. We actually had a purpose of getting the ball to DJ and often succeeded. Gordon controlled his drives to the basket and actually tried a dish but DJ was not ready for it etc. Good signs, bad result.
W/o Ellis and not going deep into the bench early in the season we have a poor rotation now. Too many guys playing too many minutes to play well all game long. Stemler and Taber are the only ones getting rest....weird uh ?

We are all diappointed in the season end performance but why trash the team at this point ? Many of you sound like you have given up .....this is exactly what you all say you DO NOT want the players to do. Crazy don't you think ? Us fans giving up when we resent that in players
I say lets suck it up as fans and give DD and the boys the support they desparately need and hope they can take us for a thrilling ride the next few weeks.
I also say lay off DD, he actually has done some good things like stressing going to DJ and the players actually responded for awhile. He did not cause and cannot cure this problem w the team.
Actually the team ceased progressing and began to look average well before the UCONN game, which I took crap for here by predicting a loss. I have adjusted my expectations to us being between 20 - 25 ranked team and as such now any wins are gravy.
