My kids get so excited when we pull their baskets out. We have more of those dratted plastic eggs than I know what to do with, due to various school egg hunts, but I figure some will break over time.

We keep reusing our paper Easter basket grass. Much better looking in my opinion than the plastic, and much easier to clean up.

Re: A Common Denominator the Word: Mom

I'm with you. I do my best to provide safe products and foods for my kids by what I've learned. But they also get a lot of freedom, and yes, enjoy some of the not so healthy treats. I've never built up what anyone would consider to be a "good" tan. My joke is that I can go from ghost to lobster.

As you can imagine, I've always been a fan of sunscreen. But I do also need to get around to the dermatologist one of these days.

My kids I consider to be both lucky and unlucky. Lucky that they tan so easily. Unlucky that they tan so easily because that means they don't have the natural reminder that I do to keep using that sunscreen. I've never been able to swallow pills, so taking any sort of medication is pure torture for me. With nasal irrigation I've fought back symptoms that have been at least very close to a sinus infection. Hard to say without a doctor's appointment, of course, but at the very least the congestion and pain were quite severe.

The salt content is lower than what you get in the ocean, I think, and if you have lukewarm water it will be pretty comfortable going in. Last year in kindergarten, she ate vegetables just fine in her lunch box. This year she won't touch them. It's not a taste change, as it's favorites she still wolfs down at home, like cucumbers and bell peppers. It's that she has noticed that none of the other kids bring vegetables, and she's afraid they will say something to her, even though she admits no one has said anything yet.

I'm working on it, though. Last year pasta salads worked great. I cooked the pasta up and kept it in the fridge, with just a touch of dressing to keep the noodles from sticking, then each morning I could throw in whatever came to mind. I think a repeat of this might help the veggie aversion, even if I have to cut them smaller.

Stephanie - Green SAHMs last blog post..Guest Post: Saving the Planet, One Diaper at a Time

Re: Pretend Play Gone Green

My daughter loves it when I hand down a pair of old high heel shoes to her for dressup. I have fond memories of playing with sparklers as a kid when visiting relatives, but the fire danger is just too much. I suspect officials were real touchy about it this year, as I saw and heard fewer than usual illegal fireworks going off.

Green fireworks is definitely a tough sell at that price. People are going so nuts over swine flu.

I find it best at this point to treat it as any other flu. Not particularly to be worried about, just use standard precautions. I did have to move my daughter's birthday party when my son got sick several days before it, but that was more to ensure we'd all be healthy on her party day. Wouldn't do for the birthday girl to be sick during her own party! And I don't assume it was swine flu.

Even if they choose to close the schools in my area I won't be buying tons of extra stuff. The nearest one is about 30-45 minutes away, depending on traffic. Not a place I go to because of that. I have a Henry's (owned by Wild Oats) within just a couple miles. I remember the news reports from several years ago during a drought, and they were interviewing people on the street. Comments along the lines of "does this look like a desert?" were common. People here don't realize how artificial all the green lawns and such are.

I rather liked one of the comments about lawn watering that one of the weather reporters made down here (Loren Nancarrow, I think) about how it's not so much how often you water a lawn, it's how deeply, and that most people waste a lot of water by watering at the wrong time, for too short a time and too often. I don't recall for certain, but I think it was something like 1 inch of water a week is plenty for a lawn.

I have a high tolerance for brown in my lawn. I rent, so landscaping has little to do with my choices, but I do like a lawn for the kids to play on. Gets them outside, but it doesn't need to be golf course green to be fun.

Re: Are there green dry cleaners?

I saw a dry cleaner in Sacramento advertising that they were green and didn't use "Perc". My daughter wanted a "Princess Party" for her 5th birthday, so I told the parents to have their daughters wear princess dresses if they had them already. That was it for the theme.

One of the moms couldn't believe that I hadn't hired a "Princess" to come to the party.

The kids just ran around in their dresses and had a blast. No planned activities, just little girls having a grand time playing. That was plenty enough for one of the girls to call it the best party she'd ever been to. Homemade cake and unthemed plates, which, while still disposable because I wouldn't have enough otherwise, I can keep using when I have that situation again because they aren't limited by a theme. Haven't figured out a better way to handle things than that.

Presents are definitely hard to figure out a way to green. They're so much out of my control. When I give birthday presents to other kids, I focus on active and unusual. I love encouraging kids in their natural desire to run and play.

And of course my daughter's excess toys periodically go to one thrift shop or another. They may as well go for a good cause.

Re: Survey: What are You Doing on Car Free Day?

I'll be in a car today - the one plus is that I'm carpooling. It's my niece's birthday, and my mother passes within a mile of my house on the way to my niece's, so going together makes a lot of sense.

But most days are car-free for me. My husband and I own one car, and I walk my daughter to school. I've become very efficient with errands ever since my old car broke down beyond resonable repair and we got rid of it. Having just one car in the family really is not that bad.

Re: Plug-In Stinkers (And Others) Taken Off Shelves

I've never really understood air fresheners. My mother did my daughter's last year, though, since my daughter wanted to be Dorothy from Wizard of Oz and my mother happened to have some blue gingham fabric that was probably 20+ years old.

This year I did give in and buy my daughter the Cinderella costume she desperately wanted, after my appeal to creativity failed. Hard to talk kids into these things sometimes. But I am making my son a blue dragon costume out of a hooded sweatshirt, sweat pants and scrap fabric. It should be very cute and I know a lot more about what has gone into it.

On the plus side for the Cinderella dress I can trust my daughter to play dress up in it until it turns to rags.

Re: Survey: Do You Preheat Your Oven?

My current oven heats nice and fast, so I only need to preheat for baking. Lead and arsenic really weren't on my mind; more to do with minimizing damage to homes so fewer need to be rebuilt, and more use of native plants. Since it seems we're likely to have these fires rather regularly, taking steps to cope with the results seems sensible.

Re: Just What We Needed Dept: Canned Air

Sheer lunacy. We rent a house right now, and I just can't picture going back to an apartment. I love the flexibility of a home.

This home didn't always have some of the advantages we enjoy right now. It's in southern California, so buying is impractical around here anyhow. But when we had major freezes two winters ago kill off the flowers our landlords had landscaped with, we were free to put in a vegetable garden. Can't tell you how wonderful that has been.

There's more we'd do if we owned. Tear out more space for gardening, for example. I like the amount of lawn we have, as it's just perfect for the kids to run about, but much of the yard space is just waste without a garden.

And that's the big thing that makes me want to own a home. My 6 and 3 year olds play in the back yard without me watching them directly all the time. I consider it a better "babysitter" for when I need to get something done indoors than the television. The outdoors sure holds their interest longer, anyhow.

I won't let them go to the park alone yet, but the supervision as they play out front is getting lighter because I know it's pretty safe. Most kidnappings and such come from family members, and even then the odds are low. We've been taught to be so paranoid about events that are really highly unlikely.

And yes, we walk to school. I so love being close enough to do that. Just about to come off the hideously expensive COBRA coverage from my husband's last job and start the coverage from the new one. I won't call it cheap, but this has made me even more aware of how much any family can struggle to pay for health insurance.

And at that, we were still lucky to have the coverage. Imagine going completely without!

Stephanie - Green SAHMs last blog post..Tweaking My Clothesline Usage
