I thought this documentary was excellent. It made a deeper impact on me personally than anything I had seen on TV in a long time. I had already heard of Professor Dawkins and had some idea of what he was all about, but this turned me into a number one fan. I thought that what he did was courageous and highly informative, unashamedly forcing those with a nonchalant or sympathetic attitude towards religion to face reality. Experience has taught me that unless you thrust reality right in the faces of such people they will just flatly deny it. Indeed, even when they are well-and-truly cornered they will often still try to do deny it. It is exactly the kind of bold, politically incorrect stance adopted by Dawkins that is needed. It is a pity the show cannot be viewed in the US because a significant part of it is filmed there. Dawkins briefly debates against a Bible belt pastor who is very high up in the Evangelical movement in America (forgive the lack of a specific name - does anyone else who saw it remember?). The pastor lost his temper and threatened to call the police on Dawkins and his camera crew.
I live in the UK and watched it on Monday night. It is on again next Monday on BBC4, I believe, at 8pm.

I'm all for spiritual fulfilment and have spent nearly twenty years in search of it (I'm 23). Some time after losing my Christian faith I discovered neo-Paganism and thought for a while that I had found my niche in Wicca. I was attracted by the equality of male and female symbolised by reverence for a goddess as well as a god, and the profound respect for, and love of the natural world in itself (rather than as the proud boast of a dictatorial creator). I personally find that I need my independence and would probably do better to stay out of any religion, even Wicca.
It is worth my underlining that after extensive and open-minded searching I have never found any real evidence for any god, goddess, or the workings of magic. This is why, at present I consider myself an atheist.

Religious believers who point to Communism as an example of overwhelming wickedness perpetrated by atheists are overlooking a fundamental flaw there, which is that Communism is undemocratic. There is no point in telling me that Communism is evil. I agree, but what's it got to do with me? I've never been a communist and never will be, but Communism has far more in common with religions, especially monotheisms, than it does with my humanistic principles, which demand human rights, universal suffrage, REAL education (as opposed to what so often passes for it), a minimum of laws but a maximum of security, liberty, justice, etc.
Communism has never valued any of these, but then nor do theocracies. You can't vote God out of office any more than you can vote Stalin out of office. Is God any better than Stalin? He's got his own version of the Gulag (Hell) reserved, not only for his active opponents but even for those who merely fail to render the constant adulation he demands. He has people starving, being killed in wars and disasters, children getting abducted for use as prostitutes, wives being abused...and from all such people he demands grovelling apologies for their alleged "sins" whilst watching their anguish with folded arms, occasionally reminding them that they deserve it for their indulgence in one or another of a long and boring list of supposedly immoral behaviours.

Remember the Republican debate at Morgan State? Of the Republican front runners, McCain, Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney all chose not to attend. What kind of message is that supposed to send to black voters who might be interested in their platform? Their decision to not attend was a slap in the face IMO, and only shows that black issues take a back seat in the Republican party.

Relax, everyone. Don't get excited just yet. Obama will still be the Dem nominee when all is said and done. The DNC has no intention of seating the MI and FL delegates because Howard Dean will look weak. And there will be no re-vote in those states because there isn't enough time to organize. Not to mention a lack of funding for elections.

Don't let the media fool you with their pipe dream that the race is "close". It hasn't been close since February 5.

That's just it - he CAN'T fade into the background. He never will. The media (and most of white america) have already made up their mind about Wright. Right or wrong, it is what it is. I listen to Fox News Talk in the AM, and that's ALL they've been talking about this morning. This is a problem - especially since Obama is not doing well with working class white voters.

Remember, all Hillary and McCain has to do at this point is plant the seeds of doubt into American voters by distracting them from the important issues. You know, things like "he's a radical... he's elitist... he's not like you or I... radical preacher - judgement.... black guy... don't trust him with your white babies...." it just goes on and on. And those seeds get watered and nurtured to the point everytime Wright makes an appearance or does it interview. Most important, it keeps Obama from setting the tone of the primary and gives the power to Hillary and McCain.

Wright really needs to do Obama a favor and go on 6 month sabatical. Him defending himself is doing Obama no favors right now and is hurting more than helping

The best part is that the government would be still fully funded - even without an income tax.

Webb or Hagel would both make excellent candidates. Webb would bring the military experience and credibility (ditto for Wes Clark), and Hagel brings the ticket closer to center.

I think Claire McCaskill is great and really like her, but a black and a woman on the same ticket? Might be a bit much. She should definitely get a Cabinet post.

I don't see the value Richardson would bring to the ticket as VP.

I don't know enough about Evan Bayh to comment on him yet.

The funny thing is that the social conservatives are starting to move toward Obama now. They never did like McCain.

Romney would make the perfect veep for McCain because he shores up McCain's weaknesses on the economy. The true fiscal conservatives who are on the fence would look at McCain in a different light and ultimately vote for him. I could see him picking Jindal and then play the diversity card. But it's unlikely that will happen.

I'm putting my money on him picking Crist.

As much as I'd love to tear into these so-called Democrats who are voting for McCain in protest - remember guys, we need to keep a cooler head.

Our candidate won. Period. We don't have to deal with rejection or any of the feelings that Clinton supporters are going thru. We have to be the bigger person.

That said... as much as I hate saying this... we need the Clinton supporters to win in November. Obama can't win without them. That's a fact.

So the next time you run into one of these women, take a deep breath, remember your candidate is still in it, and put yourself in their shoes. Explain why Obama is a good choice and most importantly, listen to what they have to say. You can't win over new supporters by throwing Clinton's defeat in their face.

Well, your opinion has been duly noted. I'm sorry you don't like my opinion, but rest assured that I won't lose sleep over it. In the meantime, the fact still remains that she will be open to criticism as becomes more vocal in the public area. And the same goes for Cindy. A while ago, she was all indignant about releasing her tax forms... saying that she will "never release them." Guess what showed up on Drudge a few days later?

There is ZERO room for misspeaking in the YouTube era. Hillary Clinton learned that lesson with her Bosnia comment. I'm hoping Michelle doesn't suffer that same fate.

The SCOTUS definitely made the right decision today. I'm waiting for the ban in Chicago to be overturned next. I completely disagree with b-serious and craig on this one.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. The gun is a tool that has the potential for misuse... just like I can run over you in my car.

And if anyone needs any further proof - look to Kennesaw Georgia. In 1983 (or sometime close to that), they made a law requiring citizens to own at least one firearm in the household. Crime dropped DRAMATICALLY the year the ordinance went into effect, which makes sense.

(That is how, for example, our Declaration of Independence ¶28, used the phrase: “He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country . . . .”) Every example given by petitioners’ amici for the idiomatic meaning of “bear arms” from the founding period either includes the preposition “against” or is not clearly idiomatic. See Linguists’ Brief 18–23. Without the preposition, “bear arms” normally meant (as it continues to mean today) what JUSTICE GINSBURG’s opinion in Muscarello said.

In any event, the meaning of “bear arms” that petitioners and JUSTICE STEVENS propose is not even the (sometimes) idiomatic meaning. Rather, they manufacture a hybrid definition, whereby “bear arms” connotes the actual carrying of arms (and therefore is not really an idiom) but only in the service of an organized militia. No dictionary has ever adopted that definition, and we have been apprised of no source that indicates that it carried that meaning at the time of the founding. But it is easy to see why petitioners and the dissent are driven to the hybrid definition. Giving “bear Arms” its idiomatic meaning would cause the protected right to consist of the right to be a soldier or to wage war—an absurdity that no commentator has ever endorsed. See L. Levy, Origins of the Bill of Rights 135 (1999). Worse still, the phrase “keep and bear Arms” would be incoherent. The word “Arms” would have two different meanings at once: “weapons” (as the object of “keep”) and (as the object of “bear”) one-half of an idiom. It would be rather like saying “He filled and kicked the bucket” to mean “He filled the bucket and died.” Grotesque.

And that's why they got the ruling right. All the people who are arguing against this have not taken context into consideration. What do I mean by context? The political (and linguistic) environment at the time the Constitution was written.

hey JB another good post but i really feel Hampton will be successful. I know everybody is so worried he'll get injured before he even throws a pitch this season but lets not be too pessimistic. This guy pitched 8 straight seasons of over 170 innings and I feel if he can get just a few starts under his belt this year he could pitch over 200 innings.

Of course (and I don't think you meant to say it quite that way), women have more to offer than just being able to minister to other women. It surprises me that after over a century of women having access to all roles available to men in the Army we still get excited about the place of women in the Army... which is (in reality) no better than the rest of our society.

I do agree we need to do more to 'minister' to women in the Army, but then we need to be doing more to 'minister' to people full stop. Indeed, there are many corps with healthy women's ministries that don't have as much as a Bible study for men -- and the reverse doesn't seem to be in anything like the same number.

Re electric cars in cold climates:

There are a lot of home done electric conversions being driven in cold climates, Canada and the US included. By using some of the energy stored in the main battery pack, the (often times insulated) battery box can be heated while the car is parked. The drain is very minimal, and works out to be less than the drain of sitting out in the cold. In other words - spending the energy to heat the battery is worth it.

While plugged in to charge, the heater drain is of no consequence, and once in motion the load of driving keeps the batteries nice and warm. Thus, the heater only drains the batteries when the car sits for long periods. I believe that this is how the Tesla works as well (which is for sale here in Canada, by the way).

Other things that Transport Canada testing has shown effect electric car operation in cold climates include stiffening grease, etc. due to cold. There are alternate lubricants that can be bought to combat this; quite effectively too.

So, yes... Cold climates effect EV efficiency, but with proper engineering the effects are small and easily negated.

Other people may be skeptical about this matter, but i've also been looking into this for about a year. I made a miniture version (a small prototype) using my home made stadic genorator and very small energy converture to make it a small scale replica. Although I got it to work it I only got half the energy from what i started out with. After my 6th attempt my prototype caught fire and burned.So for what i think that technology will come in the future but not now.

I don't know. There's certainly something to be said for having clearly defined goals, a clear path to those goals, and a near-perfect time estimate for the length of that path. That's what PvP can do for you. Hell, if you fight instead of afk honor farming you might even get there a little faster.

However, that's exactly the reason I didn't chase PvP rewards throughout most of my WoW career. I would go, "Hmm. Well, it would take me three weeks of three hours per day of honor farming to get that cool weapon. Or I could just go on this instance run and have the random chance at cool gear." Many times, you get nothing but frustration for your time. But sometimes, you get the big pay-off.

I look at it like working versus gambling. Working gets you definite pay-off after a predetermined period of time. Gambling usually nets you nothing and when you do win, you actually get less than if you had just worked for it. But it's WAY more exciting.

I kind of like that you have both options to accommodate different tastes in WoW.

I can clearly remember the effer getting lose on us all the time. So, one day he got all mangy and dirty from his follick outside of the yard and when he returned my mom had to bathe him. She then proceeded to tie him to our picnic table to let him dry. As she was inside doing dishes, she looked out to see our St. Bernard racing up the road with none other than the 200 lb picnic table dragging behind him. I can tell you that we never got another "Beethoven" again. Thanks for the laughs....and signing Cameron's blog. My one girlfriend was born and raised there and loved it. I have been there with Cary on his business trips a couple of times and we stayed at the Embassy suites. Right across the street was this huge three level mall that was really nice. The people were very friendly too. Well written. You are not alone. I cried the other day because I "f'ed" up too. Too strong of a tone or yell that caused a very scared looking face looking back at me. Then I read about someone who lost their child or baby and I think, "Oh my God, that could be me." I need to hug tighter, longer, slow down a bit and not let the little things get to me. Even though as mothers, we are all completely overwhelmed with the amount of work we do and redo all day long. Lisha is right, it doesn't ever stop with what we have to do. But, we are all good mothers and are children love us and they wouldn't want another mother ever. So, don't feel too guilty. There is always a new day! Get some rest, hon. It sounds like you are working way to hard on top of being pregnant. You deserve some alone time. Get DBD to take over some evening or morning and take some time for just YOU (even if it is just an hour)! Hang in there.

She told me it was AWESOME and she couldn't put it down. I will have to buy the first one and see for myself. To rip your book and take out a lady at the store...it must be good!!!!

Well, I can say that once upon a time ago, I was with someone that did nothing, except work and football coached. (Well, he did cook occasionally). But, aside from THAT, I did everything down to trimming the trees, yard work, doing the bills, garbage, and when I say EVERYTHING, I do mean EVERYTHING! I became the mommy that he left and it finally burned me OUT!!!! I left. When I met my husband, I was pleasantly surprised (you could say even SHOCKED) because he had to grow up as a latch-key kid. Though I feel bad he had to go through that, it totally made him the man he is today. Is he perfect? No, and neither am I. But, being a latch key kid has made him aware of what he needs to do on his end. He is great at keeping this house and laundry, dishes, yard, etc. We do the team approach. When I was gone with Cameron in the hospital for a month, did I wander how I would find the house when I came home? Yes, I thought about it once or twice but knowing my husband and how he is, I knew things would be completely the way I left it that morning. I was correct. He had swept and kept the whole place in order. The only thing I wanted to do when I returned was to pledge the furniture since it had been a month. Does he occasionally get complacent? Sure, we all do. But, there was a time when he was a teenager that he started to slack and when his mom came home, he told her he needed her to do something for him. Before he knew it, she came into his bedroom, dressed like a waitress and asked if she could take his order? (This was after a long day at work for her.) He remembers that day as if it happened yesterday and he was mortified that he actually did that to her after she worked long hours to provide for him. He felt so lazy and from that point on, he has never NOT done things to help me around the house or her for that matter. I always joke with him that if he ever starts slacking, I will put my waitress outfit on. But overall, I can't really complain in that department. But, I do agree with cousin Jim that men tend to tune out the slamming and dish banging (I tried that with the first man I was talking about), it didn't phase him. But, definitely voice your concerns or ask for help from him. Like I tell Cameron when he wants me to get him something that he is clearly able to get (standing two feet from it), "God gave you two legs and two arms, so start using them. Not everyone has that blessing." You are pregnant and need the extra help right now which should continue once number 3 comes along. Keep venting....it helps.

Unfortunately, I can NOT live without our GPS...I am direction challenged....it is the only thing that I truly care about when it comes to technology along with my internet. It has gotten me out of the worst binds in Baltimore and Pittsburgh. I never knew how much I loved it till I used it. I use to do all the yahoo print off directions but when you are traveling alone and at night it makes it rough to read and drive with a three year old in the back. Your blog cracked me up too. Great writings!!!

I wanted to tell you how much I loved this blog. A long time ago, a wise person (my very own T in Pittsburgh) helped me put the pieces of my life back together. I am forever indebted to her. There is nothing wrong with seeing someone...a life coach....in fact, that is what I am getting my masters in...so practice on me when I get to PA.(LOL) Anyway, I was once told that everyone, even the most solid of marriages, should all go to therapy....it can only make your marriage stronger. I applaud you for talking to someone and your husband. I love how your T thinks. She sounds like she has amazing ideas and strategies to help you out. You are an amazing mom and wife and you are very loved. I have not met you yet but I can tell you are a great person (just by your emails to me). None of us are perfect in our lives, with our children, even in our marriages....if we were it would all be boring. (= Keep being YOU, like Lisha said. I can't wait to meet YOU! So, as you declutter (God, I know it feels good), know that a messy house makes a home because it just means it has been lived in and memories have been created. So, be proud of yourself and the accomplishments today...baby steps will turn into bigger steps that you don't even have to think about taking...it will just come naturally. You're doing an awesome job and your kids LOVE and ADORE you....as for the guilt, kick its ass to the curb...easier said then done...I know, I still struggle with that...but in the long run it is wasted energy...as my T, once asked/told me as I sat down on her big comfy chair in Oakland..."Feel guitly? FUCK GUILTY!!!!" Just hearing her say it like THAT, made the guilt feelings melt away....ones I didn't even need to own...So, Debby from one friend to another, FUCK THE GUILT.
