Email is a strange beast, and the social dynamics of electronic mailing often create just such situations as yours.
In my experience, what to do next really depends on the sort of email and the person it's to. If it's an email with a clear external purpose (e.g. getting information, setting up an event or something similar), go ahead and send another email. If the email was "purposeless" or the purpose was essentially friendship-based, but the person you've sent it to is not an especially close friend, see him/her in person so that he/she can't ignore you. A second email is not especially likely to be answered, though you may try it again if you don't mind not getting a reply back. If the email is to a very close friend discussing close-friend things, you may send a second saying that you'd like to hear from him/her and were wondering why he/she hasn't written back.

These rules require a certain amount of perspicacity and discretion on behalf of the sender, so I trust you to have a good perception of the situation before deciding what to do.

Re: Email Etiquette

<span class="deleted-comment">This post has been removed by the author.</span>

Re: I’m done

Congrats. I'm a fan of the concrete, and maybe looking at something concrete will help here. Let's look at a familiar parable of Jesus', which I think pretty well illustrates the idea of a kingdom and how it works. But understanding it, there's the difficulty...

(Luke 20:9-16)

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away emptyhanded. He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away emptyhanded. He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’

“But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “May this never be!”As far as will goes, I think one facet of the story can really help clear that up. The landowner, of course, represents God here, the Lord of the vineyard, the King of the Kingdom. The story works to communicate the truth about the situation, because one of the things it points out is that God is personal--He has motivations, and He decides things and does things for a reason. But here, His motivations are mysterious. He, being God, must have seen this coming...why did He let such irresponsible tenants tend his vineyard? Why did He let them try to usurp what was His due, knowing that He'd have to dispense justice on them anyway? Why would He let anyone besides Himself even mess with the vineyard in the first place?There's no sense in giving away the answer; I certainly don't know it, and could only restate the puzzle from a slightly different perspective. But I think once you can answer questions like these, and like Kristi's (hooray for Kristi!), you'll find the rudiments of a solution to the paradox. I think your brother is really on to something when he says: "The paradox is that God would want what's best for us, but allows us to do what is worst for us. But that is this crazy thing called love. It must have the potential to fail for it to suceed so strongly."

Re: Woo Hoo!

"Every moment that we borrow brings us one step closer to the God who's never short of cash. You know, a gift of grace (charis).
I really like to think about the fact that God showers His grace on us independent of whether or not we deserve it. I mean, Christians are always pointing out that we don't deserve it--we use that phrase a whole lot--but I've recently been realizing that, while it's certainly true, there's more to it than that. God is good. He gives good stuff. And the good stuff we get from Him isn't a condemnation or a reminder of how much we don't deserve it: He gives it to us, in a sense, independent of merit. He doesn't even consider whether we're getting what's coming to us when he gives it out. He's simply considering our good! The glory that He gave His own Son indicates that He's good to the righteous and the unrighteous alike! That's just mega-cool to me...

Re: How about this:

Sounds like good thinking to me.

Re: Everyman Photo Contest

If it's any consolation, I thought the horny toad pic was pretty cool. It's important to know, I think, that there is doctrine on how to deal with spirits. I've had a couple of experiences with "crazy" things, one of which I can say with fair certainty was from the Spirit of God. Every now and then, I think, God does tell us some pretty intense things in some pretty spiritually intense ways.

Deuteronomy 13:1-6

"If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them, you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has counseled rebellion against the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to seduce you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from among you."I would not be surprised, then, if John had that passage in mind when he wrote the following in his first letter:

"By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world."Similarly, we've got Paul in I Corinthians 12:3. I believe Sir Robert was telling us his interpretation of this during the car ride back from the retreat.

"Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit."

Re: Alternatives to Google

Hooray for SHUT UP, JACKSON.

Re: The Peace that Passes Understanding…

Me too. You said that the Governor didn't have legislation for his proposals for months after he announced them.

"It took him months to put his gross receipts tax -- a gigantic hit on business -- into actual legislative language. The same went for his sweeping health insurance plan: dozens of splashy news conferences about a proposal that never really existed."

I thought that sounded wrong, so I looked it up on ILGA. This is what I found:

Gross Receipts Tax/Education plan:
Announced March 8 / Legislation on March 30.
http://ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?
DocNum=1&GAID=9&GA=95&Do
cTypeID=SB&LegID=26955&SessionID=51

Healthcare plan:
Announced March 8 / Legislation on March 30.
http://ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?Doc
Num=5&GAID
=9&GA=95&DocTypeID=SB&LegID=27215
&SessionID=51

Re: Blagojevich can’t stop being a backbencher

No, Rich:

Senate Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 1 was filed on March 30.

It is the full thing. You know, you just forget you've got it. And it just sits there on the top of the cupboard collecting a layer of greasy fudge. And even if you do see it you just assume it's broken, you think if it's working I'd be using it all the time, but you don't and it just sits there. Then one day, you get an overwhelming desire for toasted sandwiches, you know? And you get it down and it works, and you can't believe it, you know? And then you make every kind of toasted sandwich there is, you have toasted sandwich parties. You make Marmite and cheese, chocolate and...

All in All I love "Spaced" and would do exceptionally naughty things to win.
