I have an interesting twist on this. I have recently attended an event run by a Catholic organization where few protestants were present (including ministers). I was shocked when I saw a woman (I believe she was an Episcopal minister) wearing a Cassock and a collar.
You ask why things like a biretta and a Cassock frighten people. They do for the same reason that a woman in a Cassock and a collar alarms me. These things stand for something, namely traditional Catholic ideas. I had orriginally interpreted the woman in Cassock and collar as making a statement about the use of the Cassock and an attempt to try to water down its symbolism. In retrospect, I doubt this is the case. She was probably just trying to make Episcopal ministerial clothing into a dress to be more feminine.
However, the point is made. These things simbolize a more traditional outlook. And I think it is the outlook that scares people.

Don't be so sure you aren't substituting one version of a grand inquisitor for another. Just as you can't take loving your enemies out of the Gospel, I doubt you can take sin, death, hell, and forgivness out either.

I appreciate your list very much. It is quite challanging and eye opening. However, I have a question. What role do you think savings and investment should play? Do you think that it is permissible for Christians to save money? I tend to think that people have a responsability to save for their and their children's future.

Reading your post makes me sad. I am looking into the future and I don't see this ever happening. But it makes so much sense.

Luka,
Not that I would presume to speak for anyone else, but I'm not sure that having the preference of freeing the slave would be non-egoistic. One's life with a million dollars may not be so happy if one knows that its achievement was dependant on keeping someone in slavery.

You are evading the issue. You missed the possability where there is a change in public opinion and there is a not so generous means tested benefit or perhaps any benefit at all. In these cases, Baker would probably not say "oh well, thats democracy". So the attitude still comes off as disingenuous.

Stop using phrases like "worker's half". That is just some social democrat lingo to pretend that somehow only half of your social security comes out of the paycheck and that we are socking your employer for the other half. Come on.

But isn't that the point? The tax cut for the higher tax brackets is at the heart of the issue. The whole point is to be pro-achievement! And as to "social policy", I guess it all depends on what you mean. If you refer to abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research, these influences are outside the scope of the post. If you are refering to the pro-whining big government policies, then these voters would be somehat incoherent as you suggest.

Will,
Could you fill me in on the connection between religiosity and organizational acumen. I don't understand the connection.

Will,
Done deal. I threw in a little extra. I have to say, if there is such a thing as a "public good", supporting your web page is probably more important than voting.
