Singaporeans are a rather self-centred lot. ttz why you find people standing around and staring at traffic accidents or if someone has collapsed on the street but not doing anything to help, healthy young people taking up seats when there are tottering elderly, or expectant mums around, Singaporean men pushing past you to get up the bus or out of ... Read morethe MRT and crowds gathered by the door of the MRT/bus, refusing to move in.The strange thing is itz not restricted to the younger crowd. The older generation does exactly the same - I've been elbowed, jostled, pushed so many times by old women and men.

Singaporeans don't seem to be able to learn graciousness, in spite of all the campaigns and Singa lions. One good comparison is Hong Kong. 8 years ago, they were not the most gracious people around. Now, they voluntarily put on masks in public when they are ill, and give up their seats to older folks on the MTR. Singaporeans, on the other hand, have not changed much since.

I bought my Monroe loveseat and an ottoman a little over 3 years ago and assembled the pieces myself in less than an hour. The furniture is holding up extremely well and looks great. I considered these as temporary pieces until I could buy \\\

Shayla, it still hot, hot, hot here in FL so we can still use our pool. We don't have heating for our pool either...so it is a bit cool, but feels great on a day like today.

Audrey, thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog! We have an outdoor pool. Wouldn't an indoor pool be nice though? I'm going to miss swimming in our pool when things cool down here. We started swimming in March (it was COLD but my daughter loved it) this year so we have about five months where we won't be swimming.

Ive known pastor johnson since i was 18 years old I went camping with him and his family when i first met him. He and his family have helped me through out the years. This is for Atheist Tooth Fairy. He asked me to expand on the statement: “They seem to blame me for family traumas that resulted from the heavy negative influence of Christianity on my life and on my parenting style.”

When my daughters were “ten” and “seven,” I married because Christianity taught me that marriage was an important life goal.

In the marriage, I tolerated physical, emotional, and verbal abuse from my husband, because Christianity taught me that I was not a worthwhile person in my own right. Our minister verified my small worth by reprimanding me for filing an incident report against my husband when he shoved me out of bed. Three years into the marriage, and three weeks after our son was born, my husband beat our son and left bruises all over his body. I discovered the bruises in the morning, while my husband was at work, and I drove him to the doctor. Unbelievably, my husband and I were allowed to take my son home from the hospital the next day. It happened again at eight weeks, and--again, unbelievably- we were allowed to take our home. For four days I agonized to myself about the prospect of placing my son in foster care for his protection. On day four, operating on autopilot, I made arrangements with the social worker, called my husband telling him to meet me at the social services office (ithout telling him what I was doing),packed my son, buckled him into his little car seat, and drove him to social services to surrender him there. All that concerned me in that moment was getting my son placed in a home where he could be protected from further physical abuse. Two weeks later, I got a restraining order on my husband and filed for a divorce. (Over a period of one year I was railroaded by social services and lost my son permanently. I last saw him when he was thirteen-months-old.)

Over the next few years, my daughters followed in their stepfather’s footsteps of abuse by physically and verbally abusing me—first the older daughter, then the younger. For my own protection I placed them in the homes of friends at ages “sixteen” and “seventeen” respectively. Both daughters, believing me to have deserted them and to have failed to love them unconditionally, have since chosen to alienate themselves from me—the younger one indefinitely, and the older one permanently. Both are devout Christians, just as I regrettably raised them to be. To clarify my statement: I think my daughters blame me for the traumas they sustained from witnessing domestic violence, but I don't think they view Christianity as a cause.

Wow! What insight! Yeah, I feel like a one-year-old in my delight in exploring the world. My friends lovingly (and sometimes not so lovingly) make fun of me when I act just like a kid who’s seeing the blue sky for the first time. Christianity sure did work me over pretty good and grind out of me my exploration and enjoyment of the world, as you say. And by the way, it was women’s trauma groups that helped me learn those things again. Dusty Miller’s ATRIUM groups to be exact. They taught me that my connections with nature, others, and myself had been broken through trauma. And ATRIUM taught me ways to reconnect with all three of those. And, yes! OH HOW MEANINGFUL my life has become as a reconnected, whole person!

Thank you, Carl K. At the outset, I saw some truth in your comment. What meaning is there to be found in clothing? What meaning is there to be found in dressing a certain way to feel good? Is feeling good superficial? Is feeling good futile? After all, when I’m dead, I’m not going to have any control over my appearance as I lay in a casket with people viewing my dead body. Can meaning be found in something so temporal as dressing for self esteem, self confidence, or self expression? But my gut told me you were wrong about not being able to find meaning in such things. However, I didn’t know why until I read some of the more helpful comments.
Stronger now wrote to you,
"Dressing a certain way can be fun sometimes. Is that not meaning enough? Pull that stick out of your ass!"

While I would not have told you,“Pull that stick out of your ass,” hearing “stronger now” say it, was refreshing. I agree, fun is sometimes meaning enough, and fun was certainly meaning enough in my case. Thank you, “stronger now.”

I will admit, Carl K., that dressing nice can sometimes leave me feeling empty, but no one strategy works all the time for finding meaning. As I am learning late in life, everything I do to find meaning is experimental. If one thing doesn’t work, I can try another. If buying a new dress doesn’t make me feel good, I can paint my nails!

Thank you, Ricky W. I could relate to wishing I could have the lost Sundays back but did not dare think such a thought on my own. Your reference to bigot ("So, at no point did I become a bigot...") reminded me of my own past bigotry which I still have a hard time thinking of as bigotry but it really was. Thank you for "my suffering showed that I really cared." That was a big theme during my days with the cult, too. And, "the answer was that life is infinitely small compared to the time we'd spend in heaven," resonated with me, too. I'm still affected by that doctrine. (Though I left the faith long ago, it hasn't left me.)And, in response to, "But like an atheist couldn't give up their reason, even if they were 'forced' to at the end of a sword, I can't give up my 'extra' compassion, even when others criticize me," I say: Go, Ricky W.! Stick to your convictions, and thank you for making me think about my own moral beliefs around eating meat. FYI, there is one Bible reference I know of aimed at "trying to ease animal suffering." It is found in the tenth verse of the twelfth chapter of Proverbs. "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." Just one reference isn't very redeeming, is it? But I thought you would be interested to know. Thanks again for making me think.

Like the comments above show, most of us deal with this. I am in the same boat.
I tell myself that starting today I will not eat the junk the rest of the family eats. It does not work out that way.
My husband lays around all day reading and watching tv and eating chips and other junk and is skinny. I do ALL the chores and am usually always doing something around here and I can not lose a single pound. It is so unfair it is ridiculous!

Hmmm....it has been a strange season all round for the Premiership. Except for Middlesbrough ( who I support). Everyone knew they would struggle this season with an inexperienced manager.
Anyhow I digress. There appears to be a lack of passion in the EPL these days, and players know they will be paid no matter what no who cares whether they win or lose? Letting the foreclosed houses be sold for back taxes is good! Talk about affordable housing! Most likely the successful bidder would only need to pay the back taxes to get a Collectors Deed. In my neck of the woods, that means a bidder might be able to buy a house for $2,000.

I'd say the banks have the same right to let properties go for back taxes as anyone else.

There is only one problem with Collectors Deeds obtained at tax sales, and that is that no one will write title insurance on them. A Collectors Deed is an automatic cloud on the title. I think that if banks let REOs go for back taxes, they should be required to resolve the cloud on the title. If I remember right, that would mean providing a Quit Claim Deed.

Su Ann for PM!! =P I will be 27 this year, registered not too long ago, and can vote. Problem is, my IC has my Johor add, I need to either:

a) Change my IC to my current Selangor add
b) Go back to Johor to vote

I cant change my IC add, as I'm getting married in a few months time, and I will have to change my IC add to a KL add (coz he's from KL) so that we can register our marriage in KL. Damn stupid rule can die.

I cant go back to Johor to vote coz its so uneconomical. I was trying to hitch a ride from some friends who happen to be going back that weekend, but the car full already. If I were to take a bus and all that, will cost me about RM100 and 8 hours travelling to and fro. Plus, my family has moved from Johor, so I got no house to stay in! :( :(

How? HOW??? I wanna vote! DAP ftw!!!!!

Why do people keep holding on to the idea that hospitalists are cost-effective despite a large study that does not support this conclusion? If you look at the confidence intervals in this study, you find that the evidence is simply not there.

Happy, with all respect to your program, I think it's far from the majority. I think it's great that you can show that your own hospitalist program has results in your particular community setting, but when we look overall, we really don't find the evidence to be there. Meanwhile hospitals are hiring hospitalists left and right, on the assumption (based on some smaller studies) that they will save money. Another thing that I do not think these studies look at enough is patient satisfaction, doing tests again that may have been done before, (one might argue that cost of stay is a proxy indicator of this, but given the way hospital stays are reimbursed I don't think it's an appropriate measure), exposing patients to radiation, etc. Obviously all of this would be very hard to tease apart, but I think the hospitalist movement does not have the ammunition to back up its claims that it leads to cost savings.

That being said, I would be very interested to know more about the data you've collected at your institution, because in the end I'm in favor of the most efficient, safe, and affordable ways to take care of patients.

I agree... loan forgiveness will help, but in my opinion the more important reforms will be in making the job more enjoyable (less paper work, less hoops to jump through, more time with patients, more ancillary services to help us take the best care possible of our patients) and improving the way PMDs are respected within the medical profession (just because I didn't go into dermatology doesn't mean I didn't have the grades to do so, although that seems to be what many specialists think). But as you state, the loan forgiveness can't hurt, and will help PMDs feel a little less screwed. I really don't mind making less than others, but it hurts more when I send in my $1500 check every month.

Some of you need to go back to high school and take a civics class. Google "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and take 10 minutes to read it. Notably, the first sentence reads:

"While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities 'unwise and untimely.'"

He goes on to state:

"You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes."

The lack of equality in the provision of health care in this country is a life or death matter for millions of Americans. Disparities such as those seen in our country are not replicated in countries with single payer systems. Our fight for equal access to high quality health care is different from Dr. King's, but is in line with his dream: "Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear drenched communities, and in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty."

For me it doesn't really matters if the person is a fellow expat or a local.

What matters is for us having a good chemistry and fun being together.

Many times I see expats hanging together for the wrong reasons - Just because they share the same culture and language. I am sure that back home they would never become friends.

What a great post and an important issue.

On our first posting it felt so bad. The first 6 months were horrible. I was homesick all the time.

But then I realized that thinking and longing for the past is interfering with my ability to build a new life. SO I snapped out of it and started to enjoy and appreciate the new life.

Next posting was much easier. I did not miss home at all, and immediately worked on building a new life and new experiences.

One of the things I love about the Alpha course is the idea of coming together to share a meal. While I have some issues with the pre-fab sermons, I LOVE the meal part of the program. Having experienced it, I can testify to the incredible power of simply sitting down and sharing a meal with a group of people every week. There are very few ways that are more effective in building community. I think in many ways, that's what the idea of breaking bread was supposed to be.

<... Place is this amazing - totally youth oriented - service that I used to go to when I lived in Victoria. 1000+ 15-30 year olds would gather, worship and pray on Sunday nights. It's led by Randy Hein who is still the coolest pastor I have ever met.

The thing about the Place is that it's held at Lambrick Park Church. A couple times I've gone to the morning service...and it's...well...boring. The classic yuppie, white-bread, old-school service.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's possible for both to exist together in the same building. One does not preclude the other.

I have a seventeen year old that is really a man. He is now older(I think that should have been taller)than his Dad. He just thinks he is older sometimes.

I'm afraid that if you used that verse there would be few acceptable movies.
If you used the 10 commandments as a guideline--we would not be seeing much of anything secular made.
I guess I figure that if Jesus had to die for something we should not be getting entertainment from it.
Now I know that is a pretty strong statement--but can you imagine Jesus sitting down in the evening with us and enjoying the things that are available for us to watch? Even just the commercials.
Everyone has to let the Holy Spirit draw the line for them--but I love the verse you quoted.
If we watched T.V based on those guide lines, I think most of us would save a little cable bill each month.

this may be gross. I was actually in Israel right after College with a bunch of other graduates. We were camping in the Sahara (where there were a few homes scattered around).

Could not stand another minute and found the 'safest and most private spot"...because I could no longer 'hold it in' After feeling better...I turned around and realized that my 'private corner' was someones tiny home and my 'private spot' was right in front of their door...ran like the

She used to have really long hair but the screaming every day trying to brush it made me decide to cut her hair shorter. In fact, it is in need of another cut because the screaming is starting again when I brush it. I told her when she gets old enough to take care of her own hair, then she can decide how long it gets to be.

I lost my 23 year old daughter 2 years ago and would like to go on a cruise or retreat with oithers that have lost a child. I need to be with others in a healing place as others do not understand the pain of losing a child. Any suggestions? Thank you

I love receiving flowers as much as the next person, but I agree that flowers will not fix a serious problem. But they definitely helps for saying "I'm sorry I've been neglecting lately or not paying enough attention to you...." and for saying "I'm such a real ass for doing/saying that" and they are even better when you receive them just to say "I love you, and there isn't a day that passes that I feel so blessed to have you in my life."

I have always felt that NOT wearing a fur product that has ALREADY been bought and purchased (by whomever - the person who donated it to the 2nd hand clothing store, a grandmother...)further disrespects the animal that was sacrificed for the fur. At least let the animal's death be of some use in the form of warmth. I am troubled, however, by re-using the fur as decoration...

If nothing else, these products will force us to suspend our judgements of others. When we see a fur-wearer we will have to question our impulse to judge them as a contributor to the exploitation of animals for fur...because they just might be a recycler!

I wonder if people know that you can pour water directly into the bowl to make it flush and it takes only half the water. To fill the tank takes about 4 gallons and to fill the bowl only 2 gallons. You need to pour the water in fast because it's the swirling action that makes it go down.

No one mentioned using library online databases for information.Why not? I recently read an Education Week article (Sept. 4,2007 online), "Are our Graduates College Writing Ready?:What high schools can do to help." by Steven Horowitz. He writes "Begin to teach the research process itself, but in short, focused assignments that help students become comfortable recognizing and evaluating the different types of sources and the differences between the Web and library databases." I am a school librarian and have been for a long time, I have been asking students to evaluate the web sites they find for years, using a variety of evaluation instruments and criteria. They didn't and still don't like to do it! We have a statewide contract for free access to an array of wonderful online databases for all libraries in the state. Learning to use them and their authoritative information is a life long skill because they will have access to them in their college and public libraries. Our HS library additionally subscribes to $30,000 dollars of online databases. Your son would have been encouraged to get his information from one of those. He would then have to evaluate which of the results provided gave him the best information for his information problem/task and use those sources.

One advantage I see to TeacherTube is that it could be a way to get hesitant school boards, technology directors and teachers to use video sites. Many are so fearful of YouTube and have it blocked as a matter of course.

Great student comments. I am working with a group of teachers to setup classroom blogs and in the process we are using a WIKI to brainstorm. All this through Moodle. I can only hope that we have a chance to get close enough to our students paradigms of learning to continue to "teach" them.

My first impulse is to agree with what the father did. But if he's in jail, what good is he to his daughter? Who will be protecting her now? Doesn't sound like mom has the best judgment. It would have been better to let the system handle this one.

She was drunk driving and speeding. She killed one roommate and paralyzed another. She never spent one day in jail and her parents helped her flee the country. Then she has the balls to post pics and videos showing drinking and driving on her myspace. She deserves to go to prison for the rest of her life and I hope they take her baby away from her. Her parents deserve to do some time too. There is no excuse for anything they did. I have a real problem with people who get by with murder because they are rich and white.

in a case like this i believe common sense tells it like it turned out. what is really sad is jessie didn't think enough of herself and ended up in a situation that got her killed. i think if we could only see ourselves through others eyes. jessie was a beautiful woman. and from what i have read a beautiful person. what as waste.

Rich Whitney and company are starting to look awfully good. Common sense is the victim here. There is lots of wasted rhetoric from both candidates. They sound like just what they are, out of touch with reality political candidates. Neither have a real clue of what really needs to be done and both have handlers that look for a silver bullet but ignore the real day to day problems. How about paying down the debt, control spending on health care through preventative health care, teachers held accountable, an actual energy policy, job creation by attracting industry instead of running it offÃ¢â‚¬Â¦.did I mention Paying Down the Debt!!! Hairdoo has us at the very bottom nationally but I donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t think JBT has the energy, enthusiasm, or dynamics in her staff to do the job. It to will be old cronyism revisited. Maybe the Lieutenant Governor will do a better job when Hairdoo is led off by federal marshals.

I have learned that if you want to really know the truth about a situation you need to go to the source. People mean well but they do not always hear correctly and then pass on only partial truths. So checking out what you hear is a must especially if in not doing so you end up hurting someone.
