Thanks, Ponn. I'm already finding the system much easier to customize. I really like to get in and tinker with code and I always felt very limited with Blogger. It's nice to have full access to every character.

I'm going to work my way through your blog tomorrow so I can get going on optimizing. I'm looking forward to seeing a change in traffic and rankings, the month I spent at Blogger was pretty stagnant.

I completely agree, Stu. I use them for a little boost about once a week just because my blog is so new. But I can't understand people who use them constantly as their main source of traffic. If you need to build traffic, spend the time you'd spend surfing reading other blogs and commenting. I find that to be a much better way to get actual readers.

I'm just starting to pay attention to SEO stuff and it is really annoying. No one seems to know exactly what the search engines want or when that might change. I think I'm going to do a few simple things and hope for the best. All that 4% keywords, watch your H1 and H2 tags and don't rely on reciprocal links ... it's head spinning. I'd rather just focus on content and let the rest take car of itself.

You are exactly right, Vic. Pop-ups are totally annoying. I have always hated them. However, they are also very effective. Though it's somewhat of a mystery, people do respond favorably to them or else, as you said, they wouldn't keep on making them. I apologize if the exit pop-up annoys you, but this site is about making money online and I try to test out all kind of different things.

Your post made me realize that anyone could be a leader and a thinker. By skimming posts I'm doing both the blogger and myself a major disservice.

In the last few days I've completely changed the way I read other blogs. I downloaded a desktop news aggregator so I can keep posts that I want to revisit. I'd forgotten how wonderful it feels to carefully read an article and let it sink in, rolling it around in my head for awhile. When I've finished reading, I leave them in my reader so I can revisit them later.

So, thank you for inspiring the post in the first place. Approaching Steve Pavlina with the same mindset as I would Edmund Burke has been very refreshing!

I think you are absolutely correct about people overlooking things with depth. I catch myself doing it often and force myself not to cut corners. So many people miss out on great things because they half-ass everything trying to save time or energy or who-knows-what.

When I find I am starting that lazy crap I remind myself that the cliche is true and I am only cheating myself. It sounds cheesy when I write it out like that, but if I don't check in periodically I run the risk of getting caught up in trying to find the shortest way between two points.

I think a lot of entrepreneurs - especially bloggers and other people just jumping in and trying to make money online - think it must be really difficult to figure out ROI. So, yeah, you are absolutely right. It gets overlooked as either unnecessary or too time-consuming. I'm thinking of writing an ebook about a method that can be used to calculate ROI on ebooks that teach systems and stuff. Do you think people would be interested in something like that?

I haven't checked out WTF much, but I will have to. Maki is a guy, I only recently found out.I think I agree with you. Once I found Dosh Dosh and Court's site

I felt like I was on my way to really getting this stuff. I just recently started working with Yaro and so far I really like him. Like Court and Maki, Yaro shares a lot of information on his blog that is really useful. Some of the "internet marketing" types make you buy a $97 ebook to hear bits and pieces of their "Secrets." It's crap and I always appreciate the guys (and gals!) who share freely.

Then once a month or so I have to go through all my random ideas. So I recently bought a cute little notebook to carry with me. I keep a little digital voice recorder in my car. I feel the same way. If I could dedicate myself to blogging and ditch my 9 to 5 life would be perfect, but I got so tired of all those ads everywhere. I'd like to (at the very least) have my blog pay for itself and I can only do that with Smorty and PPP if I write a lot of sponsored posts. And the last thing I want to do is fill my blog with posts about Hawaii Trip and crap like that.

We really ought to put our heads together and come up with some ethical scheme for community-oriented bloggers who would like to make money online. I can't seem to bring myself to write an ebook and sell it for $97 like some of those gurus that really rake in the bucks.

I have the same sort of relationship with Court and with Liz Strauss at Successful Blog. They pay attention every once in awhile, but I'm much more comfortable talking to you. I'm not sure how it happened, but you and I just seemed to click. Very cool.

I haven't read any other blogging ethics blogs. I hadn't even given much consideration to the niche before I started reading your blog. I can imagine that it could be a pretty dry topic if undertaken by the wrong writer. Your writing style and passion are why I read your blog. I honestly think I'd read a blog you wrote in any niche just because I find your voice engaging and interesting.

Also, your spiritual/humanitarian compass seems to sort of point in the same direction as mine.

Are you using Wordpress. I'm not sure about other blogging applications, but Wordpress let's you change the posting date and time so you don't actually have to hit publish at scheduled times, you can plan them to post in advance. It is a great feature. If I had to actually be physically present to post I wouldn't be able to stick to a schedule at all!

It is very hard to find anything decent. I found a few interesting ones without entering an keywords and then sorting by domain. But it's definitely rough going. The fact that it is so difficult to find a good name makes it kind of a fun challenge though.

Great ideas! I have never been very fit or healthy. I played sports as a kid, but was never very serious about it. I am trying to create a realistic plan that will work with my current 9 to 5. We are moving offices in the next year or so and there is discussion of including a gym in our new building for employees. I would love to have the chance to work out during lunch with my work buddies. I think that is something I could definitely stick to.

I actually wrote a post for Pureblogging awhile back about how blogging is male-dominated. However, I am finding that is really only true in the "make money online" and "blogging about blogging" niche.

You are right that most tech fields are male-dominated. The IT department I work in as a business systems analyst (the 9 to 5) has a total of 9 people: 6 male, 3 female. I think that will change as the old school ideas of girls being better at english and boys being better at math further disappear. I mean, we did grow up in an era where a Barbie was mad that said: "Math is hard!" =)

I don't think you are a Luddite, some people still enjoy actually visiting websites. =) Personally, I use my reader to read blogs when I don't want anyone to know I am reading blogs. I have a reader that lives on a USB drive. I can update it at home and then set it to stay offline so it won't even need to hit the 'net for me to read blogs. It works great in certain situations. =)

I haven't tried AddThis, but it sounds pretty similar. AntiSocial works great, but is missing a few of the sites I regularly submit to. So I guess I'll need to dig into the code soon to add all the links I want. I like that it adds nofollows because, as much as I am trying not to care about pagerank, I don't want to give link juice away.

My favorite part of ShortStat is the keyword info. It's fun to see what searches are bringing people to my site.

I completely agree. I have a feed reader that lives on a USB drive so I can read feeds at work without accessing the internet. I run an update before I leave the house in the morning. There is a site called Portable Apps that has a whole slew of applications you can add to a portable disk.

There are a lot of online storage sources and applications so it isn't strictly necessary to have portable storage, but I find it very convenient. And that watch is very cool. I think if I don't win I am going to have to go buy one. =)

Rajesh: My reader can be set to delete or warn me at different intervals. I'm sure that's the case with many of them. I have found that, in general, the more often I post, the better response I get.

David: I agree with your method - butt in chair is definitely the best tactic =)

Brennan: I'm definitely interested to see how things pick up once I re-establish a schedule. I just don't think I can commit to daily anymore with all the other stuff on my plate, but certainly three times a week is do-able. Your blog is very nice, by the way, I'll be visiting it more often. My knowledge of viral advertising is somewhat limited.

Then the entire forum attacks him and sends him snotty links to Wikipedia and ask.com. I think beginner videos could really help alleviate some of that.

I generally use Outlook just because it is what I have always used. Plus, I installed an add-in for Getting Things Done called Jello Dashboard. It adds a few folders and checklist type items to help you get better organized. I have heard that Gmail is excellent, but haven't been able to pry myself away from Outlook yet. =)

I think, with GTD, it's less about the application you choose and more about how you tweak folders and things to fit with your system. I am fairly certain that the changes I have made to Outlook could be made to just about any mail application.

Thanks for the information. I'm not surprised to hear that 3ix hasn't improved since I tried them out.

I can't believe that they completely removed your access to your accounts, though. That's absolutely crazy. I don't understand how this terrible host can still be in business. I have never seen anything positive said about them anywhere. I will have to check out HostHaunted. What's your paranormal site? Once it is back up come back and comment so I can check it out.

I used QualityHostOnline.com. It's about $6 a month (I'm on a fairly low bandwidth plan, but they have larger plans that are still reasonably priced), you have have unlimited domains, plenty of databases for blogs and their customer service is excellent. When I first signed up with them I did a mass-mailing of about 500 people and crashed the server my site and every other clients' sites were on (long story, but basically I was a newbie and had no idea about autoresponder services and all that stuff). They shut my site down and sent an email to my contact account explaining. This was on a Saturday morning. I called customer support and immediately spoke to someone, explained my mistake and they had my site back up in thirty minutes. I had to promise never to do it again (no problem there, I felt sooo stupid!), but they were totally cool about it.

They have even helped me for free with a few installation issues I had - and they do actually charge for that sort of thing. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Jesse - Yeah. I have noticed quite an increase in spam comments since I started using the dofollow command. But I wouldn't change it simply because I think it is good etiquette to pass on link juice.

IdeaCafe - There has definitely been a change since I started showing up on all the "dofollow" lists floating around the blogosphere so I'm certain that's where probably 80% of my spam comes from.

V - You won't find that happening here. Unless you are trying to sell me something or blatantly advertising your site, I don't delete comments. I'm all for disagreement and debate!

Quentin - I'm not sure exactly what you are saying, but I do agree that the bloggers who use nofollow aren't being very polite. However, some people are very paranoid about Google smacking their pagerank for using dofollow. It happened to me, but it is easy to recover if you fix the problems. I'll be writing a post on that in the next week or so. Last fall my PR3 dropped to a PR0 overnight!

360 Degrees - Well, I'm about as liberal as you get, so I'm sure we'd have fun debating. I honestly listen to a person's point of view before I decide what I think about their argument, though. Unlike many extremists (right or left wingers) who have already decided that someone is wrong before they speak just because they have a different opinion/belief about certain things.

Olivier - I had fun reading through some of your posts - the MotivAider sounds really cool! And, yeah, writing a post about comments did seem to work well to get them. =)

Gus - of course there are more than five ways. I just said I was going to discuss a few. I agree about the ADD, though. It's all about short attention spans and multitaskers.

The review was nothing but the truth. I really have been enjoying the hell out of this software. It's so simple, yet does just what I need it to.

I completely appreciate your reasoning for not going the affiliate route - I think a lot of people just jump into using Clickbank (or something similar) without really considering the pros and cons. They think: product = affiliate program. But not every product needs to have an affiliate program and I think you were right on with wanting to keep the price within reach of more people. I think this product is great and will grow its own legs. Hopefully other niche bloggers will discover it and start using it as well.

You guys bring up some excellent points. I think we all know we should have an elevator speech just like we all know we need to recycle or save money for a rainy day. But just like those things, not everyone follows through with what they need to do. Also, no matter how prepared they are, some people have social anxiety that prohibits them from opening or steering a conversation about themselves or their business.

Brad, I completely agree with you on that. You can't expect people to just somehow figure out that they need your services. Word of mouth is great, but I think we need to participate in that as well. It can be uncomfortable to learn how to "sell yourself," but, like you said, if you don't do it then who will? If you have a small niche with good overall communication, your marketing can grow legs of its own eventually, but it has to start with you.

I think you make a great point. I've found that long-tail niches (but not too long!) can be quite profitable, but only if you create a ton of them. What I'm working on now is slowly building up these targeted niche sites so that cumulatively they make a nice bit of extra income.

As I go along I'm picking up some great tips and trying to, like you said, "carve my own route" to an actual online business. The inevitability of saturation in sites that are niche-targeted and count on Adsense or similar income is certainly enough to keep me looking for a business model that is sustainable.

Of course, this doesn't stop me from being totally addicted to building niche sites now that I know how to make them work. Exactly like you said, once people get a taste of niche success, the urge to exploit profitable keywords becomes unquenchable. As fun as it is building niche sites, the income is unpredictable and often fleeting. It makes for a nice stream of income, but not the river that would allow me to quit my day job. =)

Forrest: I don't usually talk politics here, but boy am I not a bit impressed by Scott McClellan. Always thought he was slimy. I'm definitely not a Bush fan, but acting as though he's trying to help America and doesn't have any ulterior motives (money, a fresh career with a new cabinet, etc) is just plan bullsh!t. He tries to come off as all sweet and sincere and you know the minute the cameras are off he's all "Give me my paycheck, beeyotches!" =) It's just gross.

Kevin: Dad will definitely be getting the hook-up. He's a hero, for sure. =)

You guys are all so awesome! I can't believe the great response this post has received. I rarely post anything unrelated to making money online, but every once in awhile something like this really grabs hold of me and this is the biggest audience I have access to.

I am so happy to hear that so many of you are animal lovers and feel the same way I do about stuff like this. When it comes to hunting for survival like Anne mentioned, I can understand the reasoning. However, blatant brutality is never okay and I hope the power of the blogosphere can make a difference here.

That's just because they don't understand how rarely we get 80 and 90 degree weather here in the Puget Sound. I swear, when it gets as nice as it's been the past week it feels wrong to have to do anything but hang out in the sunshine. Just because it's so rare to have such gorgeous weather here. =)

I guess I'll just have to get an umbrella and make sure the laptop stays charged if this weather is going to stick around any longer.

Thanks for all the great feedback guys! I think I will put it on a separate page because it is bound to grow and would make a better resource elsewhere. Also, I don't want my page load to take any longer than it already does.

As for the page ranks being incorrect, I will double-check them. I got them from the distribution tool I am using (and going to give away to you guys after I test it a bit more) so they might be a bit out of date. I'll run them through a trustworthy PR checker before I publish the links page.

Forrest - Sorry I missed your comment before. I'm not offended at all. You are absolutely right that lists are generally meant to sell. The first thing I remember being told when I started internet marketing was "the money is in the list." But I hate the idea of flooding people with sales emails.

That was exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. I know lists really work for some people, but I hate being hype-y. Also, I stick to my guns when I say i won't recommend something if I haven't tried (unless I state that I haven't) so it could get pretty expensive for me if I was sending out new offers every other day!

I'm signed up to TONS of lists, but more to study the sales pitches than to learn about the products. Every once in awhile I'll purchase, but I hate MLM type stuff. I think selling people a product that tells you to sell other people a product when the product itself is simply the selling is the most asinine circle of bullsh!t ever.

So, yeah, no offense taken if you don't want to join my list. I'll just spam your blog comments with MLM offers. Kidding! LOL.

Darryl - I know what you mean. I am a bit addicted to free stuff myself. That's why I like to give stuff away here.

Rod - I mentioned aWeber in the article and that's really the only mailing list service I would recommend. It's stable, inexpensive and get the job done.

For anyone who had trouble "paying" me through AlertPay I fixed the problem. Their instructions regarding their various plans sure are hazy, aren't they? I finally figured out that I needed to upgrade my account which doesn't really mean anything except that I agree to take payments and pay a fee to do so.

Ross, that's the feeling I got about Traffic Blazer especially since it comes in three types. I imagine the cheapest version is just a teaser to get people to upgrade.

GoDaddy is fine, but I'd like to find a smaller host simply because I hate GoDaddy's customer service. I register nearly all my domain names at a different site from where I host them. So I think it's time try out Hover. Ross, I don't mind shameless plugs if it's about a good service. =) This site is all about sharing resources.
