in Major WP issues - Options table exceeding 2+ gigabytes on Dan Cameron
Still unsure. MT has been great in their response to the issue and I'm not able to do a mysqldump to look at the raw data to see what the culprite was because mysql marked it as "crashed/corrupt".
MT thinks and I have to believe that MySQL might have been interrupted during a write, probably as a result of bad code in WP 2.7 or a plugin. They also suggested InnoDB, which I'm contemplating changing.
Otherwise, it could have been the result of some sort of compromise-even though my core and plugins have been up-to-date. I'll just need to keep an eye on my tables and if anything goes out of the ordinary I'll hopefully catch it in time.

I knew you wouldn't get the open comment.
I think if there's a line their close to the side of being "open", more than being closed.

Well, we've had that debate before. Apple sets the bar on the far "closed" end of the scale for most of the software / services that they release, relative to the alternatives (OS, iTunes, and now the app store being good examples).

Here's one story:
http://www.mikeash.com/?page=pyblog/the-iphone-de...
Also there's a story about a game that would send contacts unsecure over the air, I can't remember the name. I think it was called fentus but I did post about it.
If I ever talked about quality in regards to objectivity I should have made it clear that I was talking more about quality of the coding. Otherwise, the only other reason (that I agree with) Apple should reject an app if it breaks thier clearly stated criteria. For example, I could say Apple wants only quality apps because they don't allow for porn apps. Also, I think rejecting I am Rich was a great call as well--that is a clear judgement call on their part.
No matter what, it will never be perfect. But I think they're doing the right thing--especially by allowing third party browser now.

Here's a comment with js disabled. And I see the previous comment through ID, so this is sweet.

Turns out IntenseDebate was the culprit.
I noticed my options table this morning grow to >350mb, this time I was able to download the table and see ID was writing rows of logs for the sync that sends my comments to their servers.
This would also explain why those recent comments weren't being synced and showing up when js was disabled. Since the comments where only being sent to their service and not written to my own comments table.
I've disabled ID, I'm contemplating Disqus again but I'm uncertain if I want to use any comment service in the short term.
I'll need to post about the two services: I wanted to like ID, but it's very buggy-as you can tell. Disqus was solid but the style was lacking.

aside: comments work without javascript. It's just these comments somehow didn't get synced to WP, or they're not showing up because of the post id wonkyness on later posts from the recovery.

Could very well be. My guess would be that he'll be the "just one more thing", which will be his retirement as the head of Apple.

in Scattered » Blog Archive » Wordpress could face serious competition - from Microsoft on Dan Cameron
It's good to hear they're using their own development platform for this, it makes it sound like this "platform" is more of a marketing tool than anything else.
Regardless, my point is:
MS isn't "embracing" FOSS, they're just using it as a marketing tool. AFAIK they haven't contributed any code to any major open source projects, nor contributed any software that would help the progress OSS (i.e. any software other than frameworks), nor have I seen them "embracing" OSS in their own systems.
To me, a conspiracy theory is in order, only because of their very recent past (e.g. MS sues Novell, SCO) - my theory is: MS is creating these "excellent" frameworks (.net and silverlight) and by providing openness adoption occurs, we all know the losers win by openness. However, after after adoption takes place a standard is set and a lock down occurs. Classic MS, they control what the frameworks can do on what software, ultimately only on Windows Server.
So, I hope they make great software but I'd be weary of any restrictions, present or future.
Pretty much the same argument you have about Apple embracing OSS they way they have. Only Apple has contributed code to projects (webkit), embraces OSS by utilizing community projects instead of making proprietary code (apache, webdav, ical, BSD, Linux) and helped progress major projects like CUPS without killing them off.

I actually setup a Yahoo Pipe that makes a RSS feed for my Google notes. It's feeding twitter for posts, which seems like the more appropriate place for now. If I started pulling them in as posts I'll think about your code, otherwise I'll create a new pipe and use the feedwordpress plugin.

in Twitter: “Back to Normal” on Dan Cameron
It's easier to blame the architecture than the architect because it's less personal.
In this case it's the only thing to fall back on, from an outsiders perspective, because they definitely have the money to build their app to scale and to add more infrastructure.
So, when you think of it that way it's easy to blame Rails even if Twitter won't admit it because of their loyalty.
Also, there has been plenty of "insider" comments attributed Rails to their problems.

in AdBlock Plugins are Wrong on Dan Cameron
I updated the post but a commercial skipping law almost passed, it was thrown out of court because ReplayTV gave up and the lawsuit was dropped.
I had deleted a paragraph talking about the issue not being "big enough" because not a lot of people do ad blocking, I took it out because I couldn't express my feeling that --everyone-- counts. It's like a vote, it does count and it does affect the whole.
Pop-up blocking is similar to the adblocking I'm talking about but I'm perfectly fine with blocking pop-ups for three reasons:
1. They're intrusive/interfere. Pop-ups tell my browser to do something I may not want it to, which is different than displaying ads next to the content I'm reading or looking at. Pop-ups can also crash your browser or your computer because websites can throw as many popups and popunders they want by you loading the page.
2. Pop-up blocking apps tell you there's a pop-up you're missing.
3. If site owners want to get around pop-up blockers they can; easily.
Ultimately I've made the decision it's fine for me because of the above reasons amongst others and if anyone disagrees I'm fine with that but I don't think it's contradictory to block one without the other.
Also, pop-up blockers produced some of the most absurd flash and js ads to screw with. I'm sort of worried what adblockers will produce; probably some integrated windows advertising model.

Out of 136K visitors in the last week we had a total of 4 with js disabled.
And I'm not worried about standards on this site, it's a train-wreck already.

in Smash Bros. Brawl on Dan Cameron
Any --fighting-- game that allows anyone to win; just by button mashing is not fun unless you only play it 5 times a year with friends. You might as well roll dice or play candyland because whatever skill you have could easily be worthless in a game of brawl.
So, the general public would like that because they don't have to play it a lot to win at least once.
But this is a review for people that buy games, you know the people that like video games enough to pay $50-60 not experts.

in Finally…flickr does video on Dan Cameron
I'd probably leave flickr if MS took over.
Because, the only reason I see the flickr team not being able to "get off their ass" was because of the mega corp Yahoo! owning them. Yahoo! seems to strangle their new acquisitions, take del.icio.us for example, they've had a new version ready for almost a 6 months now, if I remember correctly.
I do like Yahoo! but if Yahoo! can make great services stale then MS is going to make them worse; it's their nature.

in Noise: Twitter, Pownce and FriendFeed on Dan Cameron
Originally Pownce was to replace Twitter for my micro-blogging and since both serve two different mediums and crowds twitterfeed is the only way to get my twitter status updated without posting in two places.
I just hate having more then one source for my micro-posts/status updates. It's just annoying that I have to decide what medium to use instead of using Pownce for everything.
So, I'll probably just stop using twitter altogether. Since, I still prefer Pownce over twitter and it has nothing to offer me.

Well I wasn't done, that's for sure. Every time I see something I missed I end up tweaking it just a little.
This should be good. Especially since the next time I have the opportunity to change the theme I wont care; a win-win.
