However, it's also European attitudes which shape and perpetuate the political climate. I think it's a feedback effect between mean individual attitude to risk and the overall political climate which pushes European and American attitudes to work apart, rather than either individual ('they place a higher value on leisure') or political ('they have fewer incentives to work') in isolation.

Re: Why Oh Why Can’t DeLong Think Clearly, Like Sanchez?

Scanning over the various extracts it seems to me that the dispute stems from Layard's incoherence in the first place (which supports your position re: Happiness, but i'm not sure your rebuttal of the 'Happiness... is self-evidently good' paragraph is right).

If we assume that Layard is making a rather clumsy attempt at using a utilitarian definition of happiness wherein happiness is caused by the satisfaction of preferences then happiness, rather than being a good thing itself, is the tool we use to measure what is good.

Treating it both as the way we measure good things and a self-evidently good thing creates one of those awkward logical loops whereby we seek happiness because we know that it's good, and we know that it's good because it makes us happy.

Re: Habituation, Loneliness & Consumerism

I think I agree with Kip that this sounds like a variation on the 'too many choices' theme.

As I understand it, the argument is that capitalism gives people the option of satisfying their immediate urges with material purchases in a way which eventually leaves them unhappier than they might otherwise have been.

Firstly, it's worth pointing out that it's prosperity which does this, not capitalism. The very rich have been choosing decadance over real interpersonal interaction from as far back in history as I've read. The 'problem' with capitalism, and with mass-production, is that they've placed the satisfaction of short-term materialist urges within the means of a far larger proportion of the population.

Secondly, it strikes me that this is what choice is about. People who choose to take the easy short-term hit over a more difficult path which may eventually lead to deeper happiness are making a classic intertemporal substitution. The same decision making process is behind the choice to drink, take drugs and overindulge on rich food. In every case there are those who think we'd be better off if they could set boundaries on our choices. The results don't always work out the way they'd expect.

Finally, and before this post gets too unwieldy. It's worth noting that any evidence that materialism is eventually unsatisfying is a good thing. If it takes some people longer than others to discover that they need to interact with others to fulfil their wider goals it doesn't necessarily follow that there are any shortcuts we can provide for them. Important lessons take time to learn, and some don't learn them at all.

Re: OhGizmo! » Archive » MagicJack To Be The New Skype?

if i call philippines,is it free?no charges?

Re: EeePC XP : Quelle offre logicielle ? - By Pierre Lecourt - - Blogeee.net

Re: EeePC XP : Quelle offre logicielle ? - By Pierre Lecourt - - Blogeee.net

Re: http://quaintly.net/2006/07/19/177/

hang in there.... dont hang yourself. take care =) c ya next week

Re: Sri Lanka Day 4

“madam, you are the most beautiful girl i ever see. your skin is so white, so white like taufoofa! here, i teach you dota and bring you around subang for no charge! no charge!”

er.. wait, let me see first.. hmmm... can bake me some peanut butter chocolate brownies ar? ... :D

Re: Martian’s Planet Part II

aiya... 2nd ... =(

Re: Top 3 Meme!

Since you say I dont post good replies... hehehe... I've only seen the two movies, have yet to read the book, and I found them quite compelling. I'm aware of the premise of the book, and have read some of it, however, and it does seem Lem is one level removed from the two filmmakers. They want to maintain the humanity of it, and I think most of what Lem's writing is probably the same way, except the movies can't make their focus the inscrutability of Solaris, so they focus on this idea of the foreignness of others. It's miles above any of the sociopolitical sci-fi I've read, although some of it has been more sensitive, it tends to be all about schematization and making analogs to the current, and rarely questioning the state of affairs as much as giving it clarity.
