Word up. I was just checking to see if anyone had noticed my flyers, and found your site.

First off, it's crazy you posted the Ling Ling head photo because that was totally the inspiration for this project! Growing up, I lived in a small southern town and felt totally isolated from the rest of society. In my teens I discovered zine culture, I became an obsessive collector. I loved watching ideas spread over time and distance. Historically, I think zine culture and the memes that it spread are widely overlooked.

The Ling-Ling flyer is now the stuff of legends. As I heard it (in a few of the zines that now reside in my parents attic), the flier was posted in areas of Atlanta, GA. The locals love it and soon some zine makers took down some copies and put them in their zines... and so it spread. The missing dog head flier started showing up in Chicago, LA, New York, and even in Nashville (where I saw it near a Great Escape Comics store). Then the same thing happened in these areas, people saw this random flier, took it down and photocopied it so they could spread it around or print it in their zines. Blah blah blah... So apparently the original artist was a musician named LMNOP, and I'm reading some accounts of the flier getting spread online, which may have happened, but I'm sure that the xeroxed copies spread much more than their digital counterparts... it's also worth mentioning LMNOP published his own zine, so maybe he just published the poster in there and that's how it all started, but as the flier spread around many of us had no idea of where it originated.

Anyways, what I wanted to do was basically revisit the idea of the "meme in real life". The LOLCAT flier is the first of a few of these and although it does have my "songnumber" in it, it's honestly meant to just be a fun piece of art. The goal was to pull something we see on the internets and mash it up with our mundane reality (IRL).

About the number, SongNumber has a lot of UI kinks, so I haven't really promoted the album too hard through there yet, but I have come to an agreement with them that allows me to give away one of my songs through their services. I don't know if you caught this but you can forward my songnumber to a friend, by pressing "6" on your cellphone then entering your friend's phone number. Afterwards, you'll receive an SMS text message with a url link to my nerdcore rap song "lolCats", which is all about the world being taken over by cute cats. Wow, didn't mean to type that long essay, but seeing that Ling-Ling flier for the first time in 10 years brings back so many memories, especially now as I'm taking part in this project. Thanks for writing about this and if you'd like to print out y'r own flier here is a link <a href=lolcat-lost.pdf 70KB May 21 2008 01:14:46 PM rel="nofollow">lolcat-lost.pdf 70KB May 21 2008 01:14:46 PM. If you call the number, wait to hear my voice then type 3, then follow the directions, you will be sent a free link to my song. Man, I'm such a goob. Worst case, I'll just host an mp3 for each artist and create a poll with the artists name and link to the mp3, but I'd love to have some sort of playlist with a ranking system. At the end of the voting, the singles will be ranked from 1-12 and those scores will be factored in with each of the judges 4 scores to determine the King of CDD. The less steps we could create between listening and voting, the more likely that all 12 artists will be heard fairly.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Re: San Francisco T-Shirt Photo Treasure Hunt

That's not the Bay Bridge, and obviously not the Golden Gate Bridge, so I'm assuming the picture isn't even from San Francisco.
The Brooklyn Bridge has intersecting support wires, as opposed to the vertical ones found on our bridges in the bay, so perhaps it's from there?

Re: Sunday Bloody Sunday by Saul Williams, Produced by Trent Reznor

Thanks for recommending The Sixtyone.
I registered and posted my lolCats song and it got 3 bumps in the first minute of being posted. It had great sound effects and colors. Another good Atari sidescroller was H.E.R.O.
I do think it is pretty crazy you haven't played the Megaman series. That was the first game I remember really being obsessed with. Wait... naw, maybe Super Mario was, but Megaman was a bigger influence on my artistically than any other video game. The style of the figures was so different, considering I was used to reading Marvel comics, and so fresh. More inspired from modern design than manga or other video games, the designers somehow gave Megaman that cute/sad look with just a few pixels.
Earthworm Jim wasn't that great of a game, but it was one of the first games that sort of had that "straight from a comic book" look to it that games like Sam and Max would later adopt. A fantastically animated game (for the time) whose game cartridge contained a whopping 24 megs.
It looks like our gaming history's are a little different. I've always been a generation or two behind in terms of gaming, even when I was young. I was rocking my atari for a couple of years after the NES came out, since there were hardly any games being made anymore, I picked up hella games from yard sales. Eventually, my parents "splurged" and bought a used NES family set (with Rob the Robot and the light gun), but of course the Turbografx had been out for a while and the Genesis had just been released. Anyways, I recently got a modded xbox on ebay and I burned through a ton of games from about 3 years ago. there was some great stuff, like Psychonauts! Man I loved that game.
Anyways... are you sure you haven't played Megaman?

Re: History of Video Games 1972-2007

btw, if you are interested, feel free to come talk about games at the next Game Theory. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/467714/
It's just an informal get together, sometimes we play games, sometimes we talk about making new games, mostly we talk about pr0n.

Re: International Yo-Yo Open

I can't make it, but a ton of my friends will be there. Fearing my $50 wouldn't be accepted at a fast food joint, I decided to go to Taco Bell for a cheap burrito.
When it came time to pay, the perplexed cashier asked if I had any other currency. "It's either the two or a fifty", I explained. He furrowed his brow a bit more then went to get his manager. As a kid, I had a neighbor that would always stuff my birthday cards with $2 bills, so I guess I assumed everyone else had seen them too. The cashier was young, so I assumed his manager would just quickly clarify the situation and I'd get my burrito.
Instead, the manager came out with my bill in his hand and said "Sir, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"What?!" I responded. "Why?"
"Oh, I think you know why..." He said as he displayed the crisp two dollar bill on the counter.
"No, really... I don't."
"Sir, if you don't leave, I'm going to have to call the police."
"Oh this is great. Please do!"
Five minutes later, a police officer arrived and asked what was the problem.
"This gentlemen is trying to pay with a counterfeit bill" the manager told him.
The officer inspected the currency closely.
"Why would anyone counterfeit a two dollar bill" he asked the manager.
"Exactly" he quickly replied, before studying the officers expression and realizing he must of misunderstood the question and asking "They don't make two dollar bills, do they?"
After all that hassle, the manager apologized and I got my burrito for free. This all happened to me in Cool Springs Galleria in 1991. Ever since then, I've always tried to have a couple $2 bills with me in hopes of procuring free foods.

Re: A Car’s Life

Actually this youtube game come out in July http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BckqqsJiDUI

Re: READER GENERATED: A Ring of Carts

It's the suburban equivalent of the crop circle... Lots of got soundbites.

BTW, I'm-a fan of "new media" and I've seen how it's affected print and tv, but I don't believe traditional media will ever be obsolete. Everything will probably just balance out.

Re: ….and 100 Blog Posts Later

Yay for the personal post. It sounds like it's been a productive year so far. You and Jonny had a good run and got a lot of shit done. Way to go.

I know you are trying to figure out what's next, but be sure you don't try to rush it. I think all you need is just more free time so you can more freely explore all sorts of cool things.

Re: Xoopit: Quickly, Easily Find and Share Images, Videos, Buried In Your Inbox

Hey, great article.
