in Three Rules of Why Coworking Sucks on Learn To Duck
> A true coworking space has a varied group of people that in working together are better than working apart.

You nailed it! This is exactly the feature that attracts many people, whether they are coworking at a local Jelly or in a dedicated coworking space. And there are spectacular, concrete examples in play right now of the kind of collaborative work that can come out of this environment. It's worth noting that real estate does play a role -- this isn't virtual -- and in some markets (NYC, London) real estate plays a very important role.

I think I'm going to have to re-read these books. The complexity of the web of relationships is part of what makes the books enjoyable to read. That, and the fact that there's something attractive about Fremen culture...

in Austin Startup/Geek Bar - FIND IT! on john erik metcalf
Clever idea with twitter. I'm going to try it. Thanks!

Regarding the club, don't forget the big guy at the door keeping all of the celebs and n00bs out. If you start letting them in, pretty soon you let everyone in and then it's just another bar ;-)

The only question I have is, when do you work!?!?!

That's more than I get done in one week! Possibly my life.

Great news about the plans for the space. I caught wind of this today on twitter.

in David Speers - Piranha-oia: Are Flash Mobs evil? on DavidSpeers.com
David, that was a great post. I've always thought of flashmobs as performance art, but then I do remember reading about the story in Oregon--what's scary is that I think someone could pull it off again.

But rather than think about the bad, what about the good. What if all of the Philly Spring Cleaning team had launched a 15 minute flashmob: "from 9am to 9:15am everyone pick up the trash wherever you are." There has to be a component of exhibitionism in these things (grin) so encourage everyone to upload a picture to Flickr, too. Or to meet in a certain area and clean it up for 15 minutes. Hmmm... I need to try this at home...

Anyway, you nailed it. There is definitely a psychology to mobs, including flash mobs. A tendency to lower inhibitions and to do things that normally wouldn't be done (outside the mob). For good or bad.

in Facebook. Singles ads are outta control. on john erik metcalf
Facebook has easily got the worst ads of anything I use today. They suck! No penis enlargement and nigerian money scams so far, at least.

However, I'm glad I'm not the only one getting these and I'm not being profiled somehow.

I never figured out the rooftop thing for Six. Alfred and I were in the basement playing pool all night long with a couple ladies with tattoos and some guys with English accents.
