The average band or local singer songwriter does not even know about stock music production libraries or that they can be a source of income. I recently uploaded some tracks to eStockMusic - it was really easy and they liked my tracks and approved them. 10 years ago selling music for television and film was soley a matter of who you knew.

This article is a really good explanation of the business so I included it in my recent post about the free instrumental music I offer under creative commons here: http://www.danosongs.com/music_blog/use-my-inst...

Re: Snocap, music-licensing company, lays off 60 percent of staff

Interesting, I just ran into this post and looking back to a couple of years ago is around when the SNOCAP music selling widget started on myspace. It turns out that the customer service was terrible and artists have tons of complaints of bad accounting. I guess laying off 1/2 the company will have that effect on your ability to do business properly.

Dan-O
http://www.danosongs.com

Re: New Faces Of Swedish Techno Day 4 - Nilof

I checked out their song Doden Do and that has some real wide beats! Yahoo is on a beat Google kick lately, and this is definitely another bonus feature, along with the virus protection in search results that their new radio spots are based on.

Dan-O's Free MP3 Blog
http://www.danosongs.com/music_blog

Re: Free vs. Fee Content in a Recession

The other reason that users want to pay less and less is that they have so much space to fill up in their iPods that its just not possible to pay for all that music. So the demand is for more and more songs BUT as close to no cost as possible.

Dan

Re: Stop worrying about other people’s 800 pound gorillas

Wow, so true. Compare it to any other business. If you want to start a restaurant you just do it, you wouldn't even think about the fact that you are not McDonalds (800 pound gorilla)... it's not even an issue. If you have great food, good press and a good location, you will do well.

Dan-O's Free Music Downloads Blog
http://www.danosongs.com/music_blog/

Re: Stop worrying about other people’s 800 pound gorillas

LyricalVenus - it is very easy to "get music out there" and plenty of thousands of gigabytes on iPods to fill up in the world. Tell them to get a package of 1,000 Cds, spend some time to burn it and make their own paper sleeves with "Free Sample" printed on the cover. Total cost is about $.05 each! People to this day tell me that they still play a CD they picked up from coffee shop I long ago dropped them off at.

Re: FREE MUSIC: Stream Neil Young’s “Sugar Mountain: Live At Canterbury House 1968″ | BeatCrave - Passionate about Music

Wow, amazing that this was recorded a year before I was born and is just being released...the recording sounds great considering that this was a live performnace from 40 year ago!

Re: 2008/05/18/backstage/

This is one of those things that bands and artists will try and learn what "not" to do.

Sorry Grant, but its nothing a band can't already do with a blogspot blog, google analytics and feedburner.

Dan-O's Free MP3 Blog
http://www.danosongs.com/music_blog

Re: 2008/05/14/istockphoto-royalty-free-musi/

The problem with these sites from the artist's point of view is that you are one of millions of other tracks. Then if a user actually finds and likes your music then you get paid a micropayment of pennies to a few dollars at the most. This is a lot different from traditional publishing where you could get paid hundred or thousands for placement in film and tv. All the while it's akward to be charging pennies for music online and also offer it under the creative commons license like I do. Thats why I just steer clear of uploading my tracks to stock music sites and I prefer people to come to my own site and build a mailing list.

Re: It's Called WordPress

That is so funny, I think you have the first song in history about a CMS and wordpress!

Dan
http://www.danosongs.com

Re: Jupitermedia Acquires eStockMusic; Second Royalty-Free Music Buy

These companies are addressing what is really a new market for high quality professional music for YouTune videos, presentations, flash widgets, games, etc. These types of producers can't afford tradtional licenses and really need low cost music.
