in Direct vs. History: The CAD Power Struggle on SolidWorks: Heard!
"Apple's hardware allows me to run any operating system"?

Huh? My WIntel would happily run OS X but cant because Apple won't share it. Surely your ability to run any operating system because Microsoft let you into their world rather than anything special about Apple Hardware?

gol10dr Apple's decision to keep their OS locked to their hardware is an entirely different discussion. I would also say that Microsoft is hardly looked at as a generous, open company and controls their technology much the same way.

The topic of discussion here is not about Apple it is about the best blend of direct editing in CAD tools today.

in Looking for the Perfect SolidWorks Mobile Workstation? Check This Out. on SolidSmack
I've got an HP8710w and love it except for the touch controls and screen display for Volume which are awful. Older HP laptops with buttons were much better.

Bruce, You share my concerns about non-std controllers. I wrote a post today about just that will be on-line tomorrow. Considered the little navigator one but then realised would need to lug it around or get two.

in Video: Take a Tour of the Body Farm on A Welsh View
The Stephen Fry in the US episode that featured a visit to the body farm just aired last week here in NZ. I'd heard of it before but only read about it, the video is another matter, thankfully we don't yet have aromamedia!

Team NZ complaining that the series they created is so badly designed that non-appearance is a better strategy. Alingi are doing the sensible thing in not harming their chance to appear in a final that Team NZ was in from day one even if they turned up in a bathtup (as they have before).

Team NZ need to grow up and look in the mirror if they want to find fault.

Can you believe, not everyone has Internet Access and Banking...

Anyway I'll stick to Hwy 16, much more fun!

in Laptop or Desktop? What Do You Run SolidWorks On? on SolidSmack
Am I the only one who'd like a workstation spec tablet pc with touch screen to design on?

Most users here are still desktops but I work on a HP 8710 laptop. Also have a shared tablet PC and I miss the tabletness on conventional machines. Pity is nobody makes workstation tablet PCs!

in 4 Fast Ways to Protect Your SolidWorks Data on SolidSmack
Awesome post, currently working with a SolidWorks user to get dumbed down assemblies for AutoCAD Architecture & Revit. This has helped me understand their options.

I knew reading SolidWorks blogs would pay off :-)

Josh M HA! right on Robin. you know it man! There's actually quit a few options to export 3D files, but the first one for sure would give you a simple model to bring in.

Thanks!

in Testing out the latest Windows Live Writer on Scobleizer
The one thing I didn't like was it had a preset folder for drafts/docs. I'll have to take a look & see if this one allows you to spec a location. I'm using another off-line editor saving to a Live Mesh folder which isn't in "my doc"currently.

I think Scott's demo, of mudbox, shows how 7 will change design modelling;

Josh M Awesome Robin, thanks. Nice to see R&D is looking into this. I have to say though, while the command and functionality seem intuitive, there's a lot of development, or rather potential, on the command side of the program, that needs to take different workflows and input devices into account. The changes over the next several years are going to be phenomenal. Thanks!

in A Little Golden Gate Bridge Help on A Welsh View
If you can rent a bike, nice ride along the waterfront to the bridge, over then catch a ferry back to the city (Sausalito or Tiburon) if you want. Done it a couple of times & loved it.

The view from Marin Headland is worth the trek up but I'd rather bike it than walk

I've always found it interesting to talk to the cleaners. It's amazing what you can learn. Their experiences and backgrounds can be interesting as there are many motivations that get people working the night shifts.

The other point is, depending on how the career goes, the cleaner nobody notices could be you.
