Things work differently at different sizes. Small pieces of art are more like an object, and large pieces of art are more like an environment. It's a wonderful piece of art when you see it as an environment, in large scale... But when it's small, all you see are the red eyes, and one is quizzical about this alien who's actions and attitudes seem inexplicable.

Why hasn't it sold well? Because most people are not deep thinkers, like you all at reddit are. Most people are very childlike. They go from home to college to their career... each place is a home where they are supported and coddled. They don't even have to step outside of their car, to talk to people in their community very often.

Most people simply would not appreciate the humour, because they aren't familiar with the breathtaking experience of engaging in critical thought.

I think the tshirt is magnificent. It appeals to my sensibilities - anybody who's a deep thinker would appreciate the humour - all the fluff out there which you can find to read is absurd... And reddit is where you find the meat of the issues being discussed.

I'm also going to be selling some tshirts at cafepress. As a writer and an artist, I am coming to realize that I have to be target the audience which is out there really wisely, bearing in mind this immature attitude they have. Writers particularly, have always goten flack from the crowd, who don't understand how to approach ideas written in a way where people are thinking outside the box. People don't know how to test ideas.

It's cool to see how people are using a media you create, isn't it? It's cool to see your attitude. I was also refreshed when Microsoft aired television ads in recent years about how they are so surprised and impressed about how people use the media they've created - the personal computer - the blackboard ads.

Reddit is a great place, indeed.

I think that people do tend to vote less based on what they like and dislike, and more based on what they feel should be higher or lower in relation to other things on the page. So this attempt to keep this one link at place 25, shows that effect. It also shows the wit of a person who found an interesting way to get some karma.

OLPC is better than a rock.

OLPC is not better than a piece of a paper, a pencil, and a softcover book printed locally. In addition, building up a local book publishing industry spreads the economic benefit.

OLPC is the worst form of helicopter developmental aid. Normal helicopter aid actually does stuff that is helpful locally, like wiping out disease X (granted, leaving a half-dozen other diseases, but at least these people aren't suffering from disease X anymore). OLPC helicopter aid is doing stuff that isn't even beneficial to anyone except the people who get a warm and fuzzy feeling and pat themselves on the back for how they'll "revolutionize" teaching in the Third World.

Let's be realistic. Clean water. Food. Good governance. Textbooks, paper, and pencil in schools. A school that has a roof over the head, not out in the open. Vaccination against tropical diseases. Factory jobs (some call them "sweatshops") -- low wage, but they provide a stable income and reduce poverty.

The Chinese position is not that Taiwan doesn't exist, nor even that Taiwan doesn't have the right to govern itself (recall: one country, two systems) -- it's that Taiwan can't be independent. The flag can't be the ROC flag since that would imply sovereignty. However, the flag is also not a generic five-rings flag -- it's got the same 18-pointed white-sun-on-blue-background that's on the ROC flag.

Similarly, the song played isn't the Olympic anthem -- it's the National Banner Song. Given that this song is customarily played for ROC flag-raisings anyway, it's not at all clear that this was any type of concession. The analogy would be if Britain promised not to play Rule Britannia -- big deal, they would've played God Save the Queen wanyway.

You're barking up the wrong tree. FreeBSD has always been less dogmatic than Linux. They've always been more corporate-friendly, and happier to exchange ideas both ways. For them, open-source is a tool to get a great operating system built collaboratively. It's not a way of life or a philosophy.

Perforce is a much superior SCM system than CVS, and handles the sort of complicated, multi-way merges that are common in the OS world. Microsoft uses a Perforce derivative, including for NT development. Google and Amazon use Perforce. (The Slashdotters got all upset when they found out Google was using Perforce. I'm sure you're upset too.)

Are you running a computer with a chip made by Intel or AMD? You know, there are open-source chips available. "Free as in freedom," right?

Awful reporting. Nowhere did they say that the system crashed. What they said was that a database corruption issue was detected. Therefore, the outage was intentional -- they had to shut down the system, migrate a known-good snapshot to new hardware, and replay the logs. This takes a heck of a lot of time because you're basically provisioning your IT infrastructure from scratch.

WEB 2.0 is indeed here to stay and even mainstream companies like Reliance are jumping into the bandwagon with social networking sites. Everyday we see the launch of half a dozen sites on diverse topics ranging from citizen journalism to page 3, besides the usual video sharing youtube clones. The million dollar question is, how many of these sites will actually make the cut and how many will go kaput within the next 2-3 years.

I think we missing the wood for the trees here. Indeed there are a lot of top-notch professionals returning to India, but the reason for doing so is probably lack of opportunities there. We must remember the US is a mature market and that most industries have plateaued there while in India the growing market gives them lot of opportunities to grow. About the standard of living, I think the standard of living ,may be better here (according to the author) but the quality of live there is anyday much better. (Ask any Mumbaikar who travels by a local train) ...

IE should be crucified and burned. It's almost 2008 and we're stuck at so bad standards support. They should really break get their standards compliance over 95%+ and break the entire web once and for all and then do minor upgrades. There are enough alternatives today if really the website is broken. But this is all a dream. MS wilL NOT do it. People should really forget about IE ever becoming standards-compliant in the next 3-4 versions.

Microsoft routinely corrupts politicians/bureacrats in government industries/ministries, etc. in a variety of ways. But worse, Microsoft invests in areas that HARM people in a variety of ways. Thanks Shawn. In fact, I see this problem with the recent 2.0 builds of Nokia maps as well. I started seeing this problem in firmware v30, when the maps 2.0 application was bundled in the firmware. After that, I have never been able to upgrade to the latest builds. And now this with Maps 3.0. Pretty frustrating actually. I'm not sure why they had to build it into the firmware in first place.

the iplayer utilizes microsoft's DRM to make content expire after 7 days. this DRM (or any other form of DRM for that matter) is incompatible with Linux. for macs, they'd probably have to license apple's FairPlay DRM.

so it's DRM-incompatibility rather than laziness as you assume.

I was manning a booth in Parra. The Labor people would approach the fobs and say "this is how you have to vote" and would tell them that the liberals cards were the same as theirs and they need not take them. Also, the Collin Robinson signs previously put up around the booths had all magically disappeared and changed into Julia Owen. And it was also them (and not the greens, to my surprise) who knocked down the signs for CDP.
They'd even spit shit like 'Howard never decreased the unemployment rate...in fact under him its increased dramatically' as well as crap about interest rates being at the highest ever right now.

They live off underhand tactics and prey on the illinformed and the ignorant with meaningless slogans.

@Edwin and Jim: You're both missing the point. Microsoft Research is a pure research lab, like a university. They produce papers, not products. What they do is not supposed to have a return next year, or 5 years down the road, or even 20.

They're like the old Bell Labs, or the old Xerox PARC. (These still exist in name, but not in practice.) Neither one did their parent companies any good, but they sure did the world a lot of good.

MSR has people working on theory. What does P=NP have to do with Microsoft's stock price? MSR has people working on programming languages. Functional programming languages which three people use while millions of programmers are content with Java and C++. MSR has people working on systems. Hard stuff, like distributed computing, or alternative kernel designs.

So you want to be a hard-nosed stockholder? Yes, shut MSR down. You're exactly right, they're wasting money. Why should Microsoft fund its own university when they get sneered at for their lack of business acumen instead of thanked for their altruism towards science?

I remember when MSR hired a psychologist, and the head of Quicken sneered that his developers don't need psychologists to figure out how to make user-friendly software. That's sort of like sneering that Harvard can't produce good software because they hire psychologists (tenured ones, to boot). It completely misses the point.

As for why Microsoft doesn't produce the iPod, or Facebook, or whatever -- this is a well-known phenomenon in large organizations. You should be asking the question of the development organization, not research. Remember it's R&D, not R=D.

I really don't know if research has a place in corporations anymore. MSR is just about the last one standing. Maybe research will end up being left to universities, to piddle along on NSF grant money while we waste $300 million a day in Iraq. This is a philosophical question.

What the hell is a "better" release date? I'd rather have one that isn't complete BS. No dealers have gotten any prerelease info on the Bold yet. If it was going to be released on Tuesday, they would certainly get sales information before the Bold was shipped, which they would be momentarily (or already) considering said apparent launch date.

Who is your source? I have heard nothing from anyone I know at Rogers (and no, not lackey sales reps LOLOL) or friends who have passed through RIM on co-op and still keep in touch - though all of the other information I've heard from these sources hint at an AUGUST Rogers release.

I find it funny that you reported that it wouldn't be released on the 25th ON the 25th - what breaking news! Looks like you guys have had your heads up your asses so far (like most sites), so I don't see why you should be believed now.

If you're talking about the crackberry review, then you should realize that was a prerelease build - small batches of which are made to try to get the form right. Once they do, they start looking at build quality, better materials, etc. From what I've heard, the screen scratch problem is overblown. The battery/WIFI/etc issues were caused mainly by an early build of the OS - simply updating it solved a great number of issues. Am I stating this as fact? No. But most people are overblowing those issues without understanding the what and why. I would expect build quality at least as good as the Curve, and probably better, but every person I've talked to who has been able to handle a Bold has only used an early build - I don't know of anyone who has used a release build - and they were still impressed with it overall (once the OS was updated).

Soapbox was horrible anyways..it showed a mandatory in-your-face ad that could not be skipped, didn't cache the bufferred video so if your connection was slow, you could not watch the video at all and autoplayed all the videos on MSN pages, wasting users' bandwidth.

If you look at the latest data from IDC, you'll realize Windows Server has slowly become dominant..not as dominant as the client but more servers ship today with Windows Server than Linux and Unix combined.

The real threat to English in Africa is not just French but Arabic and especially Swahili.

French is still very much used in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia while in Sudan and Egypt, English is less used than before.

Similarly, French is growing in West Africa and over the years it has even become the first language of a number of people there especially Ivory Coast and Gabon. On the other hand, native English speakers among Kenyans, Tanzanians, and Ugandans are nowhere to be found especially nowadays that they are putting emphasis on Swahili and less on English.

French became not just mandatory in secondary schools in Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and even Liberia but they are planning to raise its status equal to that of English. In fact, French is now used as a medium of instruction in these countries for math and science subjects.

The quality of French spoken by French Africans are far better than the English of Ex-British colonies. Listen to them how they speak. You can find fluent French speakers even among the less educated French Africans while in the English Africans, even the educated elite struggle NOT to commit mistakes whenever they speak English.

First of all, I believe that Bob Garfield is on staff at AdAge, not a "contributor." And the basis for his book was a long front page feature that originally appeared in, you guessed it, AdAge.

Secondly, your little editorial at the end of the article makes no sense. "Free content has been free since the TV was invented," you say. I guess you've never heard of "pay TV," better known as Cable TV? Most American's pay for their TV content. And, soon, most will pay for their Internet content, too.

As for Goodby's comment, that people will read advertising that's relevant to them -- that may be true. But in Garfield's defense, the premise behind his book is that most sites on the Internet don't deliver the audience that a mass market hit on TV broadcast does (say, the Superbowl). And if TV and other forms of mass market advertising die before Internet media are capable of replacing that audience, the overall impact on the ad industry could be disastrous, as marketers simply won't be willing to spend the same dollars to chase fewer eyeballs. (After all, not every campaign can go "viral," to use a well-worn online advertising cliché.)

Sahad, about why BM and NOT Shaadi- When Yahoo guys were doing India rounds in April-May this year and scouting for "strategic investment", both Shaadi and BM were talked to. I guess with BM investment, Yahoo can get more than just matrimonial listings. Yahoo's interest like any other portal would be to aggregate listings across verticals.

Well Sahad, the question also remains what promotional/ marketing campaigns iRishta will actually do. You would definitely know that its not difficult to start a website but its difficult to scale it up.
Also, the only revenue stream that I can figure out is advertising, if you notice the google ad links all over the site.

Yes Anil, it has its fingers in many pies but is that a good thing or a bad thing? I have followed this site for some time, they take initiatives and then dont execute properly to the extent that some of the initiatives die prematurely. They started a matrimonial service that lasted less than 6 months, very recently. Since there was some traction in real estate, they started a real estate website but I dont see anything happening there.
Anyway, maybe they needed money to pull all these stunts and maybe we see something worthwhile. All in all, its fuelling the online space.

Hi... Abhilash here from Bangalore - BTM. Welcome to the club guys! I've got a Tata-Indicom broadband connection myself and it's been dead since May 11th. First it was a problem with the link and then one day the router just went completely dead. I called up customer service umpteen number of times and no matter how many times I told them that my router's dead, they keep telling me that there's some problem with the link! I really wanna sue the living daylights outta these guys, but I dunno how to go about it. Maybe a joint effort might prove to be fruitful! Guys.. If anybody out there is ready for a joint combat... Hop in!...

Yup, Tata Indicom sucks. Afaik BSNL seems best, but whatever it is, don't go for Tata Indicom. Its painfully frustrating, to say the least. The connection will constantly drop for no reason and their "engineers" are blank when it comes to fixing it. Even calling up the nodal officer doesn't help.
