genius! i'll just quit my job now because there are so many open positions available that i qualify for that a million other people aren't fighting for because they are one of hundreds of thousands who just got laid off! i have so many options! i'm going to get off the internet and fill my triangle right now!

Hey, that's basically what I did and I'm having a blast! Actually it's a great time to be a freelancer/contractor right now - nobody's hiring full-time yet everyone still has work to do...

Oh man, i sincerely hope that subway workers on the tracks do not listen to walkmans, ipods, or whatever. workers are struck by trains several times a year; most times, they die. if those discarded batteries are indeed from devices that disable a worker's ability to hear a train coming (i realize that trains are probably louder than music from audio devices, but whatever), i can only imagine that darwin is sitting on his cloud and pumping his fist in victory.

It doesnt have to be workers on the tracks, it could be people on the platform listening to headphones. If you still use batteries for a walkman etc they generally run out after a week of constant use. I could imagine lots get thrown away in this manner

but they replace their flashlights when they are on the tracks. I hypothetically could see them replacing them while they are going into the tunnels. I know I wouldnt want to be in a tunnel and have my flashlight run out of juice

Subway workers working on the tracks use lots of flashlights. Flashlights require batteries.

subway workers also clean up subway tracks all the time yet never get the batteries. I was watching them do it last night actually. They were picking up all the junk yet never touched the batteries. Plus they generally don't bother with flashlights when they're right by the platform cause it's well lit already.
