Does this mean they're taking away our penises?
YOU CAN'T HAVE MY PENIS! ;)

in Government’s National Broadand Network could be wasted on The Metaverse Journal
I'm on an Internode plan, it's slow compared to yours 512k/128, but I also get 25G downloads per month. With all the Secondlife I do, and you know I'm on a lot... the occasional large download, a fair bit of e-mail which often has attachments. I usually end the month with up to 10megs still unusued.
The downside is the lag, which I'm sure wouldn't be as bad with a faster connection.
Some friends who are just thinking about getting online but wouldn't know what a Gigabyte was if they fell over it, see commercials on TV where a *whopping 4gb per month* is offered. are told to think of a naked man, and convert Gigs to Inches... If you're not impressed, don't go for it.
Komuso told me what He gets in Japan, and it's quite amazing. but as for me, what I get, however slow it may be and how expensive it is for what's offered, is all I can afford.

Read your Twitter about this and decided to say that exactly the same thing happened to my mate Horse, and his Island only this week. He rezzed in to find everything was missing. It's a rare but worrying bug, but was easily fixed with a rollback.

I don't mind if people want to be anonymous, I suppose if you're a guy who wants to play a prostitute or something, then ok... but in my case, I'd like to get to know people and I want them to get to know me too.
I suppose it's whether you see Secondlife as a game or not, and I don't.

That doesn't really constitute anonymity though. Unless it's something you only do once. I like to get to know people and share things with them too. It doesn't mean I necessarily give out my home address or bank statements :)

Our doco is finished too Lowell, at long last.
Although it was slightly delayed due to a sound mixing problem.
If things go as planned, I should see a preview of what we've made later this month, maybe next week.

in Sexual expression in virtual worlds - is normalcy achievable? on The Metaverse Journal
I always feel very odd around people who are "concerned" about sex. About half of us have one set of bits and the other half has the other. I was astonished when there was all that fuss a few years back about Janet Jacksons' nipple, why? we've all got them, even if some peoples are hairier than others. It's not ok to show sex on telly but it's ok to have people shooting each other, I don't get it, seriously.

in Anthropology in World of Warcraft on The Metaverse Journal
Highly likely.
The thing is, and this has been said before, that We often know people online a lot better than we'd know people in our own street, or even next door. and that is a huge change from our parents time, when people did know the neighbours well. Perhaps it's partly because people move so often these days, you barely get to know people locally and when you do, they move to a new home.
I know people on secondlife very well, I know about the problems they're having, any illnesses they've got, problems with family, what they do when they're not online, their habits and what they're passionate about.
All that matters to me a great deal, I don't see the people on secondlife as a computer character, but a real person who presents their soul as an avatar.
That's how I see them anyway, avatars, an extension of the soul.

in A quick tour of Sony’s virtual world - Home on The Metaverse Journal
I'm not convinced, can you be what you really want to be, is this stuff built by you or sony? can you be a furry? I'm human in real life, I don't want to be one in a virtual world. but then again, I wouldn't buy a console anyway. a virtual facebook? oh great :/ [hates facebook and it's clones with a passion]. It's lovely to have better graphics, but graphics alone is not why I use secondlife... it's the great community which draws me.

That's a really good point Wolfie - graphics aren't everything but they do make for a more appealing experience for people.
The furry issue is pertinent as well - I've always thought the more varied the avatar customisation options the better.

Nothing to see here, move along.
Seriously, what is that, four frames of what might be a penis?
I'm more concerned about guns on tv all the time, oh that's perfectly ok... but four seconds of blurry penis and there's a scream.
Hey, most of us have got a penis, get over yourselves, it's not going to affect your kids either, most kids have them too, big news eh?

Why is it that as soon as it gets cool and dark, people start wearing horrible dark colours? I'm sick of it... I love bright colours and would love to see designers going in that direction.

in Second Life - on the wane for aussies? on The Metaverse Journal
I would be very dissapointed in ABC if they pulled out.
I look at it this way... Secondlife is a type of media, and media is what ABC have been doing for 75 years.
You get a jeans company, car company or someone else in and suddenly, they have to deal with something they don't personally handle... sure they have the bucks to put something together, but it doesn't mean the people they pay to do it "get it" anymore than the company paying for it.
ABC have people who understand the concept, the problems, limitations and social issues.
and they have the benefit of having friends in secondlife who still are, very keen to help where required.

in Melbourne Laneways on its last legs on The Metaverse Journal
Party was good, finished at 1am because I wanted to go to bed...
but wound up chatting till almost 3am.
Although people kept popping in and out, I think we averaged about 20 to 30
users on the island at any given time during the event.
An international audience too. :)
If we keep having events like this, the Island will prove it's worth.
Send any event ideas in a notecard to Willard.

in Melbourne Laneways on its last legs on The Metaverse Journal
Oh, it's not that bad.
While it's true that Laneways is going, it's more about MMVs lease on the Island being up, than ABC Island going downhill... What will be left is land which can be used for something new, and this is a good thing.
It was nice to have a bit of Melbourne in SL [Being from there myself], I think there are at least three Harbour Bridges in SL... and one is plenty.
Only a few people are sad to see the Laneways go, as it was a really laggy area...
and yet I found that if I sat there for a while, people would gather and chat, so perhaps a place for conversation would be good.
What will become of the space is anyones guess.
There will be a party on the Laneways this Friday [I think, I need to make sure] look out for notices and
messages in the ABC friends group.

I think a party might need to be before Friday given the demolition trucks and cranes are moving in (me) and it will be no more on Thursday after 5pm this week.
Can't wait to see the 'new' community creation spring up in its wake :)

in Child Pornography - Linden Lab’s firm response on The Metaverse Journal
I don't think that people wanting child avatars is a bad thing, as Violetta said, it could be very cathartic for those who missed their childhood... I had a good one I think, but
I still miss it at times.
A friend of mine once told me that all Women on SL are Men and all Child avatars are the FBI, that was pretty cheeky, and I'm sure it's wrong but I had to write it.
Furries do cop a bit of flack now and then, but only from people who think it's just a weird fetish... Like Violetta, I'm not a furry because of the sexual stuff, it just suits me.
I think it's a shame that I can't bring my grand neice into SL with me, She's seen it and loves it.
I would love to see something setup where kids are allowed on the main grid,
provided they can only get on g-rated islands, can only log in with a parent or guardian and cannot teleport to another island without their guardian.
SL has done a lot to bring friends together, but families have been a bit left out.

There are weapon free sims, but griefers still turn up with them and cause problems.
Many of them are just buying weapons from somewhere.
I'd like to see a system where an object had to be marked as a weapon by it's creator, and if a person tried to rez a weapon on a weapon free sim, they couldn't... that simple.

I agree Lowell, I hope that one day we can have a weapons free grid.
There are plenty of games out there with the type of graphics gamers want,
Leave SL for those of us who just want to build and make friends in peace.
