OK - Seeing as im part of what must be the fairly small Sydney boxcutters contingent. I love melbourne. I love sydney. I love them seperately. We have icons. We also have substance. Its just harder to find. you have icons. its that big muddy thing that runs through the city right... what do they call that... yarra?

yeah, after watching the second episode of NEWSTOPIA, i definately think that it holds up better. its now really starting to develop its own voice. more power to micallef

ok about newstopia, yeah look i think that when it was funny, it was very funny. there was also a bunch of jokes that just fell flat. not absurd. just obvious. I agree that there is a real visual clukiness to the show. But i think that Newstopia diminshes in humour the more you think about The Daily Show. Im not saying jon stewart invented the format, but he's very much made it his own. i think what it comes down to is flow, DS flows much much better. I almost think that Newstopia would benefit from a studio audience, just so micallef can get the pacing right. The set also feels really lifeless and again i think an audience would give a certain energy to the show. This is the one and ONLY time im ever going to bee pro-studio audience. all that said, i love micallef and i hope this reall succeeds

also - what bastard accused Lost of only being for nerds. freaking ABC radio snobs. wankers, all of em.

hmm - i think once you explained the rules of GAT, i understoodyour culling process better. Some of the stuff (ie needing to be made in the last 10 years or so) i either forgot about or hadnt heard. In that case i dont mind the exclusion. Other people are going to berate u about TWW so im not going to bother... i will say this though. I reckon you could widen the criteria for GAT and itd be a great excuse to discuss the worthiness of a show each week. This about it, it could be a great way of bringing some historical context to each show... just a thought. NIt was an extremely funny episode thogh, i kinda fell off my chair on the bus ths morning. and as for the MIFF rant ... well, you should try seein a movie in sydney:)

"24. (split screens in mainstream). Ever since 911 I have been expecting a remake of Invasion of the Body snatches (everytime there is a cultural fear of the unknown it comes out in SF). But that didn’t happen. What we got was show like 24 which dealt with the idea of cultural fear."

SOOOO agree... also just watched CALIFORNICATION.... really dug it, though the boobs are totally unnessary and the actress who plays his daughter is horrendous.

actually - ive really got to second BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. shame about the title, and the pedigree because its far and away one of the best show in production at the moment. Certainly in terms of the Sci-Fi lineage, I think the X-FILES is at least worthy to consider. And lets face it - its the 'discussion' about these tv shows that makes GAT such a great segment. I mean the dissagreement of SFU is still one of the best interrogations/analyses (sic) of that show i've heard in ages.

I think you could have a great discussion about whether or not 'TOP GEAR' or THE DAILY SHOW' really fundamentally affected tv genres?

And cultural importance should surely be a consideration, i think the comment about STAR TREK and its contribution is valid - but seriously THE WEST WING - a 'democrat' show that mostly ran throughout a 'republican' administration. For a lot of us, it became the fantasy government we wished that we had. I can only speak for myself but, watching dubya on the newsmade the west wing all the more poignant and compelling. Context can be incredibly important in shifting the experience of a show...

ok... shuffling off the critic-soapbox...sorry:)

ok - just throwin' in a really obvious GAT - the west wing?!

perfect - no. shmaltzy, idealistic, american propaganda - maybe. But in terms of writing & directing on US network television - it stood out there a lot.

also - Mighty Boosh? Daily Show? X-Files? Grass Roots? - im not nessesarily definate that they should be there - but there's good discussions in a lot of these, i reckons.
