My husband has been in sales for going on 8 yrs now and worked for Firstline for 7 of those years. He is the most honest and hardworking guy I know. He never lies to customers and always leaves his sales with a good relationship with the customer. In fact, he often calls me to let me know that his customer has invited him to dinner and so he may be a little late getting home. At the end of each sale, sales reps are required to have the customers they sign up talk to someone in customer service who asks them point blank if they know the length of the contract is 36 months and that they know the specific price that they are required to pay each month. How exactly is that deceptive? Alarms save people's lives. Period. He's selling people something that could save their valuables at the least and more importantly, save their lives and the lives of their family members. Why do you buckle up when you drive? Your chances of getting in a car wreck are not seriously high. You do it so that in that unlikely event, you are protected. Same with health insurance, life insurance, and alarms. I personally love my kids too much to even take a chance that someone could break into my house and hurt or kidnap them. It unfortunate that your son didn't have a good experience and now he has to find somewhere else to point the finger for his failure. Certainly, there are sales reps, managers, etc.. that are dishonest, but your son is the only one that decides what he's going to say to customers on the doors. No one makes anyone sell their soul, it's a choice that the indvidual makes. My husband choses every summer to go out and work extremely hard to provide for his family in an honest and upfront way. He has had his share of success but he knows he could sell more if he lied. He just choses to work that much harder than the guys who take the easy way out by cheating. So, it sounds like Starbucks or MacDonalds or whatever would be a good fit for your son. That way he can have someone tell him to work and take no intiative for his own success. But, if you are hardworking and self motivated you can have a lot of success selling alarms door to door and still maintain your integrity. By the way, how on any level do you think you have any real knowledge of summer sales. The only people your son has associated with and that you listen to are the guys that did the same thing he did and are now playing the blame game. This is a job that separates the men from the boys and some guys just aren't ready to see that they are boys. I have no problem with guys that quit and have the personal insight to say, "hey, I just couldn't cut it; it's not something I want to do". But the whiners who blame their experiece on everyone but themselves just irritate me to no end.

Re: GoFirstline.com: Evil, Deceptive Marketing to College Students

Did "these kids" you mentioned not have cell phones? My husband puts his cell phone number on the top of each contract. He doesn't care if customers can call him because he has nothing to hide. The number to Firstline is on just about every singe piece of paper that the customer signs. And how is it that I know so many more people (in almost 8 yrs) that have had a good experience in summer sales as compared to those who have had a bad one? You take your son's one year and the people he met and suddenly his experience is the norm? I think my husband and I have much more information with which to base our opinion off of. As for the official material: Firstline provided contracts, signs, and welcome packets for all of their sales reps. Business cards are a waste of time. People who want your business card just want a quick way to get you gone. They will never "call you back". So, why would any door to door company waste the time and money to print out thousands of business cards that are just going to be thrown away. Your son should have read the contract he signed better to know what he was getting into. Why should a company have employees living off them when they are not producing any revenue for the company? That just doesn't make any fiscal sense. As for the Prodigy being deceptive. Haven't you ever seen "a free weekend in so and so" advertised on T.V. and all you have to do is attend a meeting. It's obviously to sell you something and I would hope most people are smart enough to know that. Millions of companies use tactics like that to generate interest. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it's not like Firstline made this approach up. And, anyone with any street sense can see that it is more than what's at face value. I also know for a fact that Firstline was dead serious about the Prodigy when they rolled it out to their employees. Sure it was to generate interest in the company, but it was also to find a prodigy. How is "advertising director" deceptive. Waitresses and waiters now call themselves "servers" now but they still do that same thing. "Server" just sounds a little nicer. So are they being deceptive? The customers are advertising for the company and they are getting a free alarm system for it. If they were just to go out and buy the equitment, they would have to pay for it. And, even if you got a totally dishonest sales guy you would have to be a complete idiot not to see that you have to pay for the monitoring. It's everywhere on the contract and you have to answer "yes" to the customer service respresentive that you understand that (did you gloss over that in my intial post?). And, finally, my husband isn't a liar. Never has been and never will be. His approach isn't based on deception. He is a good man who is doing his best to provide for his family. You don't know him or anyone else in this industry so shame on you for your uneducated generalization. I'm not a cheerleader for Firstline. They do some things I don't like, but you seriously don't have clue when you start talking "summer sales" companies in gereral or the people that work in the industry. I have a little boy who I plan to raise to take responsibility for his own actions and experiences instead of being acted upon and blaming others.

Re: GoFirstline.com: Evil, Deceptive Marketing to College Students

I think that comparing selling door to door in Fresno, CA to serving in a war zone is a little extreme, but that is neither here nor there. The thing is that you have personally attacked my husband because he worked for Firstline in their summer sales program for 7 years. All I was trying to say is that everyone uses their own pitch and some are honest and some are not. Thankfully, neither Wright nor Trevor are my husbands. And while I still wholeheartedly disagree with your views. They are just that, your views. And I have my own. I know what kind of man my husband is, and so it doesn't really matter what anyone else might think of him. And, I'm sorry for being rude. That is not the person I normally am. I offer my apology for being less than curteous I hope you'll understand that I just spent a stressful day spent taking my 4 month old baby daughter to doctors to try to find out why she won't eat. I came home and read this and it was the straw that broke the camels back. I hope your son has a better experience in another job.

Re: The Johnson Family Update › Log In

holy crap! i didnt know he could say "biaper" yet! that is awesome. good story!

Re: You know you’re in college when

Yay that's my list I made! When you have highly diversified mutual funds and your investments range not just among different companies but among different sectors, the rate of return is almost always better than the return from treasury bills.

People seem to think that private accounts means that people will be picking and choosing individual stocks on their own: no serious reform proposal suggests that. The accounts can very easily be structured such that investors are protected from individual company meltdowns like Enron.

Re: Deep Thought

"Mom never hid the fact that my dad picked his career over us. Music is not to blame. Movies are not to blame. TV is not to blame.

I think that another key issue that we've also bred in society is a serious lack of people taking responsibility for their actions. It's always someone else's fault.

I beat my wife - it's my dad's fault, I learned it from him.

I sleep with multiple men and end up with AIDS - it's my mom's fault, she slept around.

I kill homeless people for fun - it's society's fault because I'm expected to perform at such high expectations, and I have no outlet for my anger.

I smoke pot because my friends do it, and I wanted to be cool.

I shoot classmates at school, and fantasize about killing them - it's because I play video games and watch violent movies. Never mind the fact that my parents have no idea that I have bombs and guns in my bedroom...

When it really comes down to it, every single day, we all make choices. You cannot control the choices that others make around you, such as your parents, friends, or family. Yes, those choices might affect you negatively, and teach you behaviors that are destructive and wrong. However, you have a responsibility to break free of that cycle and get yourself help. There are of course, extreme circumstances where people *can't* get the help that they need - but those are few and far between. It seems that we have more and more criminals blaming their actions on others to get out of it.

When this is accepted, what is anyone learning from the situation? Whether as an adult or a child - if there are no consequences for one's actions, there are no lessons learned. The behavior is repeated and usually escalates into something worse.

I'm so sick and tired of hearing how people's actions are always someone else's fault. Take responsibility for your actions, and hold others accountable.

On another note, the discipline question.

I think the number one key in disciplining any child is to know that child. My aunt and I discussed this recently - she is the mother of three very different, grown children. (24, 21, and 17 I think.) I have a two year old son, and she was watching him, looking at his personality and how he deals with conflict. After thinking about what she said, I could not agree more, and wish that more parents would think about this with their own children.

You have to know your child

This requires *gasp* spending time with them, a concept that a lot of parents don't seem to get anymore. They're so quick to put their child in so many lessons and sports that they're missing the real time with their children while they're young.

My cousins:

L - The oldest, very approval driven. With this daughter, all my aunt and uncle had to do was tell her how disappointed they were with her. This tore her up and she usually changed her behavior immediately. They didn't have to spank her, because they knew what worked.

R - The middle, only boy. He occasionally needed to be spanked for serious offenses, however, the method that worked best for him was to keep him from playing outside, or keep him from his friends. This punishment was so severe for him, when it happened he would immediately shape up.

S - The youngest daughter, extremely stubborn. My aunt said that they knew they couldn't spank her - because her personality is so headstrong that spanking would do no good, she would look at them and say "is that all you got!?" It wasn't effective, and ended up being pointless in the end. She told me "S (uncle) could beat her until she was bloody and she would still be fighting." **Note - my aunt and uncle would never, ever beat their children, she said that to make a point.**

They were not against spanking, but they found out what punishment worked best for each of their children, and used it accordingly.

I'm not against spanking my son at all, however I want for it to be so shocking, so "What the heck mama you never do that!" that it really gets my point across. I want it to scare him, not hurt him, so that he knows I mean business, because I don't do it very often. I don't spank him very often at all - but when I do it's memorable because it is so rare. Usually it's for something that is extremely dangerous - playing with an outlet for example, or running into the street. Those are things that can't be tolerated under any circumstances, and the lesson needs to be quick and sharp. I will not spank him for hitting - I think that sends a confusing message. Don't hit people... so I'm going to hit you.

Knowing your child and what works is so key. Flexibility as a parent is a must have, and learning your child's personality is so, so important. Not just for discipline, but for every aspect of that child's life. How do they respond to conflict? How do they respond to disappointment? How do they respond to accomplishments or winning? How do they respond when hard work is required? All of these things are lessons that will make them or break them when it comes to being great adults. These are life lessons that are essential in the future, when they're working, or parents themselves, or in school.

Let's start stepping up as parents and teaching them these things instead of letting them make their own choices - they're our kids, they need boundaries and guidelines and discipline. They're not our buddies.

Sorry so long... just my thoughts.

Re: WTB Ench +15FR Cloak – PST

Mmmhmm... not derogatory towards women right? And if they're going to use another carrier, or I should say if another carrier is going to agree to use this platform, I will be REALLY pissed that I miss out on both the iPhone and the Google platform. I'm thinking it may be time to change carriers - although I left Cingular when AT&T; became Cingular because of such horrible customer service. For one thing, they aren't giving the celebs money, they're giving them product, it's not like a dollar amount that could be spent teaching the homeless to read or something. Secondly, as much as I hate to admit it, celebrities have a big influence on shopping trends. If they buy it, other people will, too. Although part of being "Treehugger" is reducing shopping altoghter, when people do buy we'd like them to buy products that are environmental in one way or another. If giving celebs free ecoswagg will increase the number of people who make their next purchasing decision a green one, then I'm all for it.

Re: Connecticut Egg Farm Will Convert Chicken Poop to Power

how much energy does chicken poop put off?

Re: \"No Sheep For You\"

Organic wool is avalible, but it presents two issues. One is that no matter what, sheep are killed in the process of production. The second is that it takes lots of resources to support the sheep population. Cashmere goats are causing dust bowls in China because of demand. For more environmentally friendly animal wool Alpaca is a great allergen free option. It is eco-friendly because it can be produced locally in many areas, it doesn't create alot of demand off the environment, it comes in plenty of naturally beautiful colors, it is warmer then wool so less can be used, Alpaca are never killed during the process and is not as taxing on the environment. The vegan yarns are interesting and environmentally friendly, some of the corn, soy and other yarns are made from materials that would be thrown away. So very eco-friendly.

Re: Wal-Mart Senior Executives on Selling Solar and Playing Politics

I think Walmart's approach to "green" policies is all about how they can make more money. They install solar panels on their stores so their electricity bill can be less.

If they were really committed to the environment, they'd stop shelling out plastic bags in their stores and they'd demand that their suppliers stop wasting so much on packaging.

Re: Ontario Bans Bans on Clotheslines

I completely agree with this comment. I, too, live in a "condo" townhouse (not freehold, but subject to rules set by the property management company that "owns" it) and wish we were allowed to run clotheslines. When I was in Italy, I loved the look of all the clothes lines hanging between the houses in Venice, so beautiful and colourful. I have a fold-out clothing rack that I am allowed to use (as long as it is not visible above the railing of my balcony), but it is very small and I only end up using it for delicate clothes that can't go in the dryer. I wish that people would realize that drying clothes don't really bring property values down; God forgive we actually let our neighbourhoods look lived in!

Re: Tricycle Super Hero in Fight for Cycle Safety Episode

You can easily carry things on a trike. I have a Scorpion fx tadpole-style trike. At the moment, it has just a behind-the-seat bag, which alone could carry lunch and have room to spare for more stuff, such as tire pump, street shoes, jacket, hydration bag. A brief case wouldn't fit the particular bag I have, but then I could get the optional rear-wheel rack for the trike, which would then allow me to mount bags that could carry something as large as a brief case or a couple of bags of groceries.

People do long-distance touring on trikes--carrying sleeping bags, tents, food for several days, and so forth--on their trikes. If they can accomodate long-distance touring, trikes can certainly accomodate a commuter's need.

Incidently, I am not remotely a jock.

Re: Are Lucky Charms Better for You Than Granola?

This is exactly the difference between health food and the general food mentality. A typical person thinks "woo less calories, less fat more healthy", a health food person thinks "hey omega fats, fiber, protein, yum yum". As far as the vitamin argument, are you kidding? Ok, so maybe fruity pebbles are fortified with vitamins. What that really means is they took all the good stuff out and put back in vitamins that cannot be absorbed by the body and may be toxic. For example calcium is a favorite mineral to add to food, but too much calcium without enough of other minerals can cause calcium to be stored in soft tissue instead of bone. Chemically derived vitamins in a recent British study were found to be so harmful that they stopped the study completely. Granola may have less vitamins however vitamins in food can be readily absorbed by the body. All the good stuff is kept in. Hemp seeds are a great source of vitamins, protein and minerals.

Re: http://www.crimene.ws/2008/09/trial-begins-in-teacher-love-triangle.html

I agree that Eric should be convicted of manslaughter and serve a minimum of 2 years. He may have been the one that pulled the trigger, but he is not the one to blame for all the events that occured. His wife, Erin, sounds like a master manipulator and I'm sure she had both her husband and Sean Powell in the palm of her hand. The blk woman has had to learn to provide for herself and her kids bc the blk men were not doing it. They were acting a fool, cheating and in jail...still are. So women obviously lost a sense of femininity and learned to be independent and lacked the need of men.

So yes, we need to get back in touch with our feminity and our role as women but we can't do that unless the blk man is willing to step up and assume his role. I believe as women it is up to us to be patient and nurturing and express the need and want for a blk man as a partner (although I totally understand delving into the markets of other races bc blk men are slacking right now. Mixed families are cute. Not as cute as blk fmailies, but work with what you got), but I understand how hard that is when you're an incredibly successful woman and, strictly looking at the numbers, there aren't enough successful blk men to go around. It's hard to be taken care of and feel taken care of when you are tripling your partners salary and paying both of your bills and his credit card debt (I would NEVER, but some do just to have a blk man). I have no problem with finding blk men with potential, but at 40, how long is it going to take to finally reach that potential. I mean honestly, you should have already peaked.

Moral of the story in my opinion is:
1.) blk women should date other races
2.) blk women should put an emphasis on family and career early on and not start thinking about marriage and kids at 30
3.) blk men need to get it together (blk women should help)
4.) adoption is real and if you can't find a blk man to make a baby with just get your own from Africa.
5.) stop making excuses for blk men and why they aren't doing the damn thing like blk women are. they should be.

That's my two cents.

Re: TWITTER GIVEAWAY: iPhone 3G 16GB Version!

I've tweeted and follow you!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

https://twitter.com/preschoolinmom

Re: http://www.weekinrewind.com/2009/03/twitter-giveaway-flip-mino-hd-digital.html

I really want to win this for my hubby for Father's Day!!! http://twitter.com/zdaisy

Re: http://www.weekinrewind.com/2009/01/giveaway-breakfast-at-tiffanys.html

Count me in!

Re: http://www.weekinrewind.com/2009/01/giveaway-funny-face-centennial.html

One of my favorites!

Re: http://4littlemen.blogspot.com/2009/05/this-weeks-numbers-are-from-samantha.html

Beautiful!

I think we were probably due within a few weeks of each other last year... here's mine.

http://inkstainsandfingerprints.blogspot.com/2009/05/random-picture-challenge.html

Re: http://4littlemen.blogspot.com/2009/04/laundry-this-laundry-that.html

Ooh, as soon as I saw the pic with the Eco Store oxygen whitener, I said, ooh, what is that? Always looking for an alternative to oxyclean, especially for the toddler clothes and the diapers!

My laundry tip is a simple one: we live in an apartment and don't have the option to line dry our clothes or diapers. Clean out the dryer vent every other month! The lint filter only catches about 75% of the lint, and cleaning out the vent not only dries your load faster and more efficiently, it saves in energy usage and also reduces risk of starting a fire.

Brooke
inkstainsandfingerprintsATgmailDOTcom

Re: http://4littlemen.blogspot.com/2009/03/as-seen-in.html

Great pics! Sounds like maybe it hits too close to home for some of them.

While I agree with most of the points, how do people not see that it's said with tongue firmly placed in cheek?

Brittany is NOT saying that anyone should never see a doctor, or that modern medicine is uncalled for. It has a purpose--when it is *needed*.

I'm all for making the best choices for my family, and I do not judge anyone for making different choices (am I perfect? No. I just had BK for dinner tonight actually, and as healthy as I try to be, I could still stand to lose a good 20 lbs).

But what I *do* struggle with is ignorance. It has to be said--whatever choices you make, whether they be seen as mainstream or crunchy/alternative, do your research first, and make an informed decision. It can be said for both "sides" - don't do something just because your doctor/monkey's uncle/hottest celebrity says it's a good idea.

In the end, it all comes down to making the best choices you can for you and your family, and being comfortable with them. There's no reason to be offended by the way someone else does things. If this post offends you, maybe you should ask yourself if you're really comfortable with the choices you're making. Otherwise, brush it off.

Re: http://4littlemen.blogspot.com/2009/03/random-picture-challenge.html

Could it be?
