Since 10.4.7 you can use Control mousewheel to zoom, or on a notebook you can use Control two fingers on the trackpad up or down (which is a virtual mousewheel).

(Friends with Scott Lemon, found you that way, hi!)

in Apple TV: Sharp or Not? on Scobleizer
I've looked at a lot of content on the Apple TV, and while some of it (320x240 video podcasts and such) can look blocky at 1080i, it's nowhere near Mike's "tequila shot" analogy. iTunes-purchased movies and music videos, hand-ripped dvd's, episodes of BSG (both old resolution and new), and The Merlin Show all look great on my set (an old 36" CRT VEGA set to 1080i) and on a 40" Bravia set to 720P.

Making blanket extreme statements without backing them up with facts is just linkbaiting and trolling, in my opinion. If Mike's so sure of his poor quality statements he can grab a digital camera and post comparison shots. Where are the facts?

in Patents bring Novell and Microsoft together on Scobleizer
Around our office here's how the chat went:
Oh sure, *first* Novell copies Expose from Apple, and *now* they copy partnering with Microsoft, which Apple did first in 1997!

because then after dropping off stuff you don't need you can go inside Weird Stuff and get more stuff you don't need. :)

Congrats Robert. I realize you have other Apple lunch hook-ups, but if you ever are down Cupertino way give me a ring, my cell phone number is on my blog, something I picked up from you. :)

Robert,

I feel for you and hope you're doing ok. I lost my mom to lung cancer in 1995.

One of my fondest memories of my mom is one morning when she came and woke me up. I was probably six or seven. I remember she was walking her fingers up me and singing this little song, it went "You're growing, you're growing, you're growing in and out! You're growing, you're growing, you're growing all about!" It was silly and funny and from the heart, and it stuck with me. I do that now with our five year old. :)

in Ending 2005 in a book store on Scobleizer
Robert, did you read Freakonomics? While not strictly a business book, it was thought-provoking. I enjoyed Welch's "Winning" too. He comes across as a jerk, sure, but he also talks about the value of people and has some interesting things to say about presentations and business meetings.

Also: I live about four blocks from that store, you could have stopped by. :)

For 2006, make sure you put Edward Tufte's Beautiful Evidence on your wishlist. He said it would be out about April. Can PowerPoint 12 do Sparklines? :)

in Naked Conversation in an Apple store? on Scobleizer
Christopher,

Personally, I saw no arguing, screaming, trolling, conspiracy theories, slamming, or stalking.

I used to be an active atheist. I even helped run an atheist group at Ohio State. What finally made me leave was that I felt like atheists didn't stand for anything, they only stood against whatever the fundamentalists christians thought. Living your life standing against something rather than standing for what you believe in is a powerless position. You become enslaved and controlled by that which you oppose.

Take that for what you will.

John,

So why are you posting here on New Year's Eve? Pot. Kettle. Black. :)

Robert,

Fun as always, the crowd you attract is always interesting to chat with!

I'll be there for the 30th (and I hate the Cheesecake Factory, so that's saying something :)), and I'll be at Macworld most days. I'm hosting a breakfast thing on thursday, but otherwise I'm mostly attending.

in Why does Apple have a great brand? on Scobleizer
FineJames: This isn't a new ad campaign, it's an old one.

see: http://www.redlightrunner.com/rosparthindi.html

I don't see it as opportunistic marketing. Heck, the marketing folks probably hate resurrecting this old campaign. Personally, I think this is great, and respectable.
