"If you show genuine interest in your kids ... all of the sudden you become human to them, and they become human to you"

Everybody knows this but it's hard to keep it in mind at every moment, thanks for the reminder.

As a high-school tennis coach I have "friends" on-line who are sophomores in high school, which can present other problems. They write stoopid stuff on my "Wall". Their sophomoricness occasionally crosses my "news stream" -- thankfully, the newest tools from Facebook and others make it easy to tune them out.

Danah Boyd said that these services are "networked publics" with rules similar to a public park. Adults are welcome as long as they don't act creepy and weird.

This is a great topic, thanks. I'm definitely trying to figure out how get a "groove on" in digital media just like a lot of others, by trial and error.


I've built a little bit of confidence by starting with liking and commenting on FriendFeed, but haven't developed a consistent flow of sharing stuff. Now I am starting to add some delicious.com links, and will eventually write some blog posts somewhere.

It does seem like the competition between the conferences has created a lot more awareness this year, that's a good point.

I agree with Ted Dzuba that some of these companies are just putting pretty Ajax widgets together (eye candy), it will be fun to see what kind of truly disruptive technologies come out to play.

Wow, these are great tips, I really enjoyed this. It's amazing how many different ways there are to connect all of these "streams" together: feeds, text messages, meta-sites like FriendFeed, etc. It's great to find this concrete advice on Oh! Identi.ca! (I like it with 2 exclamations!!)

This is just an fyi but I think you may have a minor typo on your home page, "Faulker's got nothing on me." I wikipedia'd that name just to make sure I wasn't being stoopid and it said "No page with that title exists.", I proceeded to enjoy the article on William Faulkner -- didn't realize he had a Nobel Prize in '49 for "his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel" and not one, but 2 Pulitzer Prizes. shee-ow!
