Dave-
I think this statement: "...my friend Howard Weaver says that while he thinks Gladwell isn't so bright..." may be a misreading of what Howard Weaver was saying re:"bite of less than he can chew.” ". I think his point is that Gladwell can be tedious rather than saying he wasn't so bright. Just my reading of what Weaver was saying.-Jim

Allan Agreed... he doesn't say that at all. He would have been wrong if he had.

in twdsc.us: @davewiner. "First impression of Google Wave: It is totally not what I wanted. But totally predictable." on twdsc.us
Google Wave is a first attempt at aggregating synchronous and asynchronous data based upon a updated metaphor of modern computer usage rather than antiquated postage mail model for email. Eventually having a real time platform with twitter and friendfeed feeds with smart filtering seeming like a interesting approach, it's usefulness will only be proven over time...much like twitter. Also the wave brothers developed google maps, one of the most useful apps on the web, imho.

Twitter is to email as a baseball bat is to football. Google has a proven track record of not understanding real time networks. I hope that changes and that Google applies it's native intelligence to improving real time networks.

I was listening to a recent Gillmor Gang http://gillmorgang.techcrunch.com/2008/11/10/gi... where Bret Taylor explained the reasoning behind SUP http://code.google.com/p/simpleupdateprotocol/ SUP was created out of the need to reduce the complexity (xmpp) of doing something users were requesting. FriendFeed seems to be on an interesting trajectory in serving as a model for innovative responsiveness.

dave I listened to that GG too -- but noticed something else. They haven't implemented the weblogs.com ping protocol that is already widely supported that does exactly what they need. It's not innovation to reinvent something that already works and believe me, the weblogs.com protocol is braindead simple. It might have been nice to have something beyond pings, but they should have done pings first.

in Why so quiet? (Scripting News) on Scripting News
It will be interesting to see if the electorate makes the investment in understanding Wright in the long form rather than voting viscerally to how he has been caricatured in the short form.

I am also hoping the JFK electorate carries the day rather then the GWB electorate. I think Obama has lots of ground work yet to do to make that happen, through voter registration and education.

Helping America understand Wright the Prophet rather than Wright Farrakhan-lite will take some heavy lifting on the part of his campaign and his supporters. I appreciate your efforts in jump starting this discussion and hope others join in from the deck and the galley. The quiet that we hear may be America listening to itself again.

Phil- You setup quite a straw man there. I hope that you will vote for Obama, he is really interested in moving the country forward. It is unlikely that he would have Kerry or Hillary in the admin. They are doing quite fine in Congress, where he will need a working majority.

in Political notes (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I think Obama has used this incident to his advantage. He has shown both humility and used the incident as an illustration of how Clinton/McCain represent old politics. I also think the incident revealed how traditional political coverage is so bankrupt. Today's PA polls show him within 6 points of Hillary in PA. He does better when the polls show him way down, it really gets his base motivated. Tthese incidents (bitter, elite, Wright, et.al) help him overall in terms of the general election. He is unproven on the national stage and these incidents given him the opportunity to work through his response playbook to understand what works and what doesn't. He has shown he is a very quick learner, admits mistakes and pivots quickly. Hopefully this will be how he governs and we are seeing the early seeds. Obama showing that he makes mistakes and admits them is a net positve. I think most PA voters and most Americans are not looking for a perfect candidate, just the best choice out of who is running.

in Why the Bear Sterns bailout was a good thing for small investors (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I am also glad the Fed stepped in to save BS. However, I do think there needs to be major reform in the financial services industry and perhaps the Fed action will drive the needed regulatory oversight of the financial services market. I would like to see greater regulation in how bond rating companies rate some of the newer investment instruments (CDO's SIV's, etc.) Treasury, Fed, and Congress need to ensure that there is the proper regulatory oversight, similar to what was done with Sarbanes-Oxley. Having a healthy, properly regulated US financial services industry is in the interest of the world, not just the American investor class.

It is refreshing to hear a political discussion about the importance of transcending traditional frames that divide us. Obama's ability to create a power political machine based upon transcendence strategy is impressive and speaks to how he will govern if he wins the opportunity. Thanks for the insightful interview.

I prefer the original. It is really simple, Obama represents progress to many Obama supporters. Hacking the original is like putting lipstick on the Mona Lisa, it's really not necessary.

Stanley_Krute Hi Jim

Many paths up the mountain.

I'd aver that hacking the original is like playing a cover of a song on an album as opposed to an original.

My own thought would be to have a cycling set of images, differing only in the phrasing, so as to send a number of powerful messages.

Obama is an excellent writer, and he employs excellent writers. Their catchphrases are each useful and important.

One of the few areas where Mitt Romney agrees. He's paraphrasing two or three Obama catchphrases in his most recent speeches.

Streambase is another interesting CEP company. http://www.streambase.com/index.htm I am surprised there are no open source CEP engines. It would be interesting to see CEP usage breakout of the financial services industry and intelligence community and onto the web. I see lots of potential for real time pattern recognition of emerging trends if rss feeds can be inspected like the sql streams are inspected by CEP in the financial services industry.

CEP Wikipedia entry is also insightful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_event_proc....

Seems like having large data streams is essential for CEP to be useful and if one could aggreggate and inspect gigs of RSS feeds with CEP and a domain specific rule set then some interesting magic may emerge.
