I've always struggled with the assumptions that were made of me because of having more males friends than female, and have ALWAYS rejected that there is a gender bias...even though I know there is one.

Cudos, it's good to see such a young woman with such wise words.

We can become a tribe.

I am. It's likely a function of some things already mentioned..demographic, location, time constraints and of course, who the heck would I twitter with!

I agree it is a great tool, and can absolutely see the potential for mass use. I just have to wait for some critical mass adoption.

Super post. Thanks.

Re: I Am Not A Woman Blogger

Whitney, you and I obviously share the same view point on this. Any label/qualifier for *us* is a negative one, one that leads to separation of the 'whole' group.

The truth is though that many people still need the labels in order to organize their own place in society. They need to feel like they belong to a specific sub group, a specific club. I suppose that I've always likened this to whether someone is a 'team sport' player or a loner.

There's nothing wrong with either approach. We all have to be who we are, and live our lives true to ourselves. We have to be careful to accept every individual on her own merits, and to make assessments of her based on her own merits and accomplishments, rather than on her associations or lack thereof.

Thanks for the thoughtful post.

Re: I’m going solo

Best of Luck Whitney, you are young, talented and driven. Written from one woman to another, not intended to be published and critiqued. In that light, how dare you call it ‘sad and untrue’?
I make no excuses for life and decisions made. As an adult I make commitments and decisions. I don't flit from thing to thing following my muse.
For the record Dan, I have been laid off 4 times and made 3 major career changes in my life, my husband has made one major career change as well. We too have taken risks and carry a mortgage. This isn't about risk adversity. It is about passion.
Change and adversity have taught me to value happiness and family above all. So, what I suggest to anyone is that you do the majority of exploration and risk taking before you have other distractions in life.
What I am saying applies to me, and I would suggest to woman more than men as Whitney alluded.
Life is too short to be unhappy, stressed out over priorities. I choose not to be in the rat race now. I choose to work my 20 hours a week doing fun stuff for money, and 80 hours a week for the joy of being inspired by my kids.
Dan, I don’t need to watch someone dying to help me take my decisions. I am living my dream. I hope that Whitney lives hers.

Re: I was asked to join the IAI Board of Advisors

Cheers Whitney

Re: Happy Cog and Happy Whitney

Congrats again Whitney. It sounds like you are looking for more work/life balance and simply more balance in work.

I agree with Brett completely. Not every door needs to be walked through. If you have the luxury of turning down the opportunities that no longer fit your plan then you should be able to.

Again Brett is right on the mark with surrounding yourself with a huge range of people. Not only will they keep you grounded, and help you to keep perspective, but some of them may also inspire you to learn more, to explore avenues that you may never have considered otherwise.

Cheers.

Re: Help me celebrate my 1st year of self-employment

Congratulations Whitney. Two techniques that have worked for me are:

Saying 'no' - a hard step to take. It's important though.

Another useful technique for me is to schedule your 'Me" time such that you aren't always connected/online. It is truly liberating and relaxing to withdraw from the noise of life/cliens/friends even for a few hours a week as a start. Block your 'me time' into your schedule and make it at least as improtant as the top client appointments in your book. If it helps to join a club/buy theatre tickets to stick to me time then do it.

Good luck.

Re: 2008/02/16/social-networking-risks-rewards/

I have to agree with huxleyboyce. As adults, the benefits of being connected in social networks to people that you like are immediately visible. The downside can be that those people you've left behind in life are back again.
Too many users aren't educated enough to block friendship requests that can be harmful, or to block friends who become abusive. Then, there is the always the prolem with kids that the subtle bullying that has occurred at school becomes rampant online. Kids live and breathe with their peer groups - at home (nights and weekends) on the computer, during the day at school. How does someone escape from the abuse hurled from all directions? Expecting the service providers, and network developers to provide the shields as about as realistic as asking teenagers to abstain from sex....

Re: 2008/05/11/mothers-day-blogging/

@ Kelby
I can't agree more with your comments.
