Alot of purists would rather see the American invented "NASL Shootout" as you call it than the PK version invented by FIFA. If we must break ties the American version which MLS also had for years tests skill and actually gives the keeper an advantage rather than deciding the games based on pure luck.

This piece is insulting to those of us who like American sports. Those of us who have listened to you trash non collegiate American sports on your various podcast appearances, understand where you are on this point. The premise of this piece can be argued but tossing in the bit attacking American sports was simply petty and stupid and undermines your other well argued though flawed points.

For someone who has been so eager to point out the numerous failures of English players in MLS and the failure of American players in England claiming the two football cultures are incompatible why write a piece like this. Are you claiming that America should adopt a more English model, because that contradicts even your statements today on the radio after this piece was apparently written?

Those of us leaning toward network neutrality would similarly argue that 2 broadband "options" in a market is similarly underwhelming as an argument for "letting competition work."

While I'm generally of the opinion that a al carte pricing is a pipe dream, I can't ignore the fact that cable companies are already doing it, albeit at a coarser grain. It's called tiered pricing and it seems to drill holes in your argument. Why can I not simply buy the premium package without having to buy the lousy "basic cable" first? The answer is, of course, "because they can get away with it" but at the same time it suggests that a la carte is not entirely a bad idea from an economic standpoint.

There appears to be a middle ground (somewhere between pure a la carte and the bundled system we have now) that no one is exploring.

Don't forget that most critics are complaining that Google will be making piles of cash from Google Print via ads and/or click-throughs to booksellers.

Which, of course, is completely wrong. Anyone bothering to look at the FAQ can see that. I guess it would make their capitalist heads explode to find out a company is doing something simply because they believe in its benefit to society.
