Joy, I hope you get that promotion you are obviously obsessing over. Then, of course, I hope you get Salmonella and Ebola simultaneously. You unequivocal lack of caring for other people is similar to that of heroin addict who just sold the last of the family heirlooms for a fix. Please do not pretend to destroy our fun merely because you lack any fun yourself.

in Self-destructing DVDs - Already Extinct? on Inside Redbox
I remember seeing these "self destructing" DVD's in 7-11's and other quick-mart type places a few years ago during the test marketing phase. It's definitely not a new thing at all. It didn't take off then, and it will not take off now, for dozens of reasons. It was rejected primarily due to consumers concerns about environmental issues. Since then, the company has expanded (somehow) and has struck some deals with environmental groups (paid off people). Technically they can be recycled, but chances are people will throw them in the trash can.
About the hacker thing, well duh, it only takes 20 minutes (45 on a slow computer) to rip any DVD onto the computer and then you have it forever. Yes it's illegal and immoral, but it is the same as wrapping it in a vacuum-shrink cover or putting the dvd player in an oxygen free environment in order to get more life out of it. One day, corporations will realize that hackers are the most environmentally friendly group of all!
I would be happy to pay for a DRM free digital-only copy, since my computers are linked up to my home theater anyways.
By the way, DivX is an Audio+Video Codec named after the company who also released the DivX Player, DivX Inc. The quickly-doomed disposable dvd was called DIVX and required special DVD players... the failure cost Circuit City over $100 million. To add to the confusion, some modern DVD players will play videos encoded with the DivX codec, and will be marked "DivX compatible".
Go figure. Sometimes it seems technology takes two steps forward and one big step backward.

LOL thats a good one!! Hahaa ohh I'm gonna have to use that sometime. Yeah there actually are always lines for stuff, kinda bizarre. I travel a good bit, and I can say with honesty that Orlando is pretty bad in many ways. Fun to visit, bad to live... like many vacation spots, I suppose. I'm moving back to the beach soon anyways.

LOL that's what I was afraid of. I'll probably watch it anyway. The CG is supposed to be good, so I can at least appreciate it for that I hope. But that's what I thought about Beowulf but I couldn't finish it.

I've only been using Redbox for a month and I'm already fed up with it. I live in Orlando, in a major city, not 30 miles from a traffic light. But every Redbox location in the area has only one machine. Who cares right? It's free right? (basically)...
Every location has a line at least 10 people long, sometimes 15+ going out the door. Of course everyone has their loud kids, is shouting in various languages, and nobody knows what they want to watch or what the machine holds. I drove by three locations tonight to rent a movie, each with lines of 10-15 and blocking the entry.
I refuse to stand in line for 45 minutes, surrounded by yelling in languages I don't speak, with kids running into me constantly, just for a $1 or free movie.
Tonight I eventually went to Blockbuster and was in-and-out in less than 5 minutes. My 40 minutes and stress-free rental is worth the extra couple bucks. I hope Redbox is better where you live, because the experience is horrible here.

10,000 B.C. got destroyed by the critics and in the ratings.. I haven't seen it but the trailer and TV spots look awesome. Can someone whose seen the film give us an unbiased comment? I just can't trust the critics anymore.

in Return to Any Redbox Feature a Problem for Some on Inside Redbox
Exactly.. I cannot believe he would blame "corporate America" for his own shortcomings. This is the same kind of person who spends all day blaming everything on everyone else, to the most ridiculous ends. I understand his frustration but the fault is simply that of a few individuals.
Nobody in their right mind would purposely return a Redbox dvd to a non-Redbox machine. (Remember: $25 after 25 days, plus no dvd.) So it is probably just a silly mistake by a very few people. Or perhaps it is just a few people being total idiots, you decide. Don't blame "corporate America" just because of a few mistakes or idiots.
There's my three cents.. Two cents plus one for inflation :)

in Redbox Rolls Out New Rental Selection Screen on Inside Redbox
My local Redboxes (32828 Orlando) did not have the update as of approx 7PM Monday. So I think they must be updated in some pattern, not all at once. That would make sense, from a network/server point of view.

AWESOME! Oh it just gets better and better! The only way I think it could be better is if they also rented HD or Blu for a couple more bucks.. but we've already beat that idea up enough. What I hate, and it's just a stupid little gripe I have is that the disks coming out of my local machine are filthy!! I mean disgusting...as if someone had used them as plates to eat burritos from. But that's a stupid gripe and I know there is nothing that can really be done about it. Besides I can't complain for a dollar for every few rentals.

in Redbox Codes on Inside Redbox
The Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in zip-32828 only has one machine, and let me say that there is almost always a line at least 7 people long. On Friday the line was over 20 long, and going out the door blocking the entire entrance to the store. It was quite funny since the entire line broke out in a yelling match in Spanish at each other and I thought there was going to be a riot. They absolutely need to put in another machine! I will be shopping elsewhere soon.

I don't know if this will work for you, but I use my debit card (bank card with MasterCard logo: Washington Mutual) and it works with no problem. I do not have a real "credit card" either (cannot afford / bad credit). Also, I have a PayPal seller account so I can buy and sell on eBay and after awhile they will send you a debit/Visa to use money right from your Paypal account. You don't have to be rich to use Redbox... I have 4 bucks in my Paypal and not much more in my bank account.. I'm a poor broke college student and a no-benefits veteran, so don't tell me about "not fair". Redbox works great for me!

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to try a different card tonight. I can verify that (for me at least, at the Wal-Mart grocery store Redboxes) you cannot use the same codes with the same card. It may be partly because I linked the first card with my email (to reserve a movie online) so it displays my email each time I swipe the card. Two other cards are not linked to anything so I will use those.
And I thought this was damn funny: "dude, it's only a dollar"
