Great stuff Jim, that's the exact right attitude. And if you asked around, that's the kind of attitude that many of today's tech leaders started with!

in Molly is right — speaking shouldn’t be done for free on Scobleizer
Unless it's Gnomedex, right?

These days I'll rarely speak unless the event is covering my travel and food and giving me at least 500$. Mainly because with food and cabs and travel costs, I tend to be out of pocket that amount anyways.

I'm not the A List speaker Scoble is, but most events find this reasonable.

Of course, I've chosen not to get paid for events where I really believed in the cause, and I've happily paid for events where I wasn't the speaker.

End of the day, though, speaking takes away from my day to day business, so unless I'm going there for strategic reasons, it's actually costing me to go (far more than most conferences are willing to pay).

That said, speaking is often a crazy amount of fun. It needs to be done in balance (some of the 3-4 week tours I've done just kill your body, and mental health), but these days it's part of being in the "Web 2.0" world.

/me gums Aaron to death ;-)

I don't really have a complaint. FF is great software, and continues to do well. Mainly this is the first move in a lay-up (that I may not have time to finish, due to other commitments).

Don't worry, I can handle a little lashing. It's been a few weeks since the last one, heh.

And we're nothing but happy to have Aaron! I think the transition is obvious now, when before it seemed kind of like a stretch.

Either way, it's happened, and I for one am very proud of it :D

in Happy Blogiversary, Jeremy Wright on Technosailor
Thanks mate, it's been quite a ride. I don't compare myself to Scoble and Seth, but I've enjoyed just about every minute of what blogging has brought me. There've been some negative points and some really, really negative ones, but overall it's been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

And working with folk like you just puts the cherry on top ;-)

in WordPress Unattended Installs on Technosailor
Hart, not really. Your issue is creating a centrally managed Theme. Which Wordpress is happy enough for you to do. With a centrally managed Theme, all that other stuff would come out of it. Once you had it, an unattended install would have your blog, and theme, setup in seconds. Without the theme, though, all this can do is install WP :)

in Google Spreadsheet — so what? on Mathew's comments
"that it will become something more than a kind of half-assed Web version of Excel. Let’s hope so."

... So we're hoping Google changes tactics this late in the game?

I was a huge Google fan in the beginning, but each new product shows less vision, less leadership and less quality than the last. Too bad too, because they have just about the smartest group of people on the planet working for them.

Oblivion is kickass. I'm not an RPG'er, so take that with a grain of salt. But, I've played 20 hours of it already and I've only had it for 5 days. That's bad, right? ;-) Oh, and I haven't even *started* on the main quest, that's just doing SOME of the things available to the side.

Btw, Gamer Tag: "Jeremy Wright". Feel free to add me mate. I also highly recommend Perfect Dark, Burnout, Geometry Wars, Zuma (for the wife) and The Outfit Demo (I'm addicted to it).

Oblivion was my game for this month (I'm trying to lose weight, and I get to buy a game for every 5 pounds I lose... ironic, eh?).

Anyways, hope to catch you online again sometime. Been ages since we've played :)

Brian: He's on Wordpress.com. No access to the files.

And, as someone else mentioned this is an oooold theme. There are more than 200 themes available for WP2.0 that would work with Wordpress.com.

in Marc wonders why I’m speaking at Supernova on Scobleizer
Oh, I give a totally different talk each time, but the problem is that the audience is often in the same "what is blogging, why should I do it?" phase. I'm sure there are others out there besides big names that could effectively answer that question :)

in Marc wonders why I’m speaking at Supernova on Scobleizer
No offence, but Marc's post is a riot. His solution to having the same old people speaking at conferences is... to have Dave Winer speak on RSS and Steve speak on Attention. Brilliant.

What Marc really seems to want is the foremost authorities in each area speaking on each topic.

But, guess what, what happens when you do that is ... you get the same damned people over and over again.

Hell, I even speak too much on this stuff. These days it's only when fantastic little communities get together (mesh) or when I get to speak to specific industries (airlines, automobiles) that I get excited. Otherwise we're just covering the same old ground. Over. And Over. And Over.

in Would you join a company just cause they let you blog? on Scobleizer
Yeah, I'd guess it's much higher than 137, given the number of posts by PM's saying they've hired someone thanks to a post on their blog.

To answer your title's question, no I wouldn't join a company just because they let me blog. But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't join a company that *wouldn't* let me blog.

Fair enough if it's in startup phase or something, or put boundaries on the blogging, but it's such a part of my personality, not letting me blog'd make for a Sad, Sad Jeremy ;-)

in Steve says “I shoulda been there”; gives me a “reality check” on Scobleizer
Mac Beach: Saying you're switching out Word for OpenOffice, which is effectively just a Word clone in the first place, isn't the same as saying you're switching out for Writely.

Now, ajaxWrite I could see you doing that with. But not Writely. Not anytime in the next 2 years. There are just too many "features" that anyone above a grandma uses. You won't realize you're missing them until you try and use them.

Btw, OpenOffice is fantastic. I use it on my lappy while travelling (portable OO even). It's come a long way in the last 5 years. But it's taken it that long to go from a "word processor" to anywhere near a "Word competitor". And, really, it's not even a Word competitor yet in terms of ease of use or many of the features... But it's damned close.

Imagine how long it'll take a pure web-app to get to that point. Even if it takes 2-3 years, which'd be amazing, who says that's what users'll want in that period? Plus, it'll be nearly time for a new version of Office by then. One that'll, apparently, allow for far more portability anyways.

O12 is really an enterprise release. O13'll be a far more mobile-aware release, because that's where the market's heading.

Sorry for the tangent. Late. Must sleep ;)

in The new A list on Scobleizer
I'm not taking sides in this. One time I stood up for Dave (over the closure of the webogs.com blogs) and I got attacked from both sides (including Dave) for it.

I stay away from Dave (or, to quote his post today, I stay away from teh "virtual Dave").

The guy that walked through the restaurant in Palo Alto seemed like a nice enough guy to me. Maybe one day I'll get to meet the "real" Dave. If I do, I hope I can ignore the bad experiences I've had with the "virtual" Dave.

Either way, good on your for standing up for your friend. And good on you for not getting into the fight. Both great decisions mate :)

Windows Source Code is viewed by more than 15 million people every year. Probably more than look at Linux's core kernel code.

As far as blogging, the biggest reason Scoble chose Wordpress was that he wanted a Hosted solution. There simply weren't any decent ones running on Windows technologies. Plus, Scoble is a User. He wants what's best for him. He doesn't often choose things ideologically. He chooses them because he believes they are best for him.

in Check this out: Virtual Earth Streetlevel on Scobleizer
Very cool. Last week in Rochester, I used the "birds eye" views for the first time and was FLOORED by how useful they'd become since initial beta (the ability to pivot on location to see different angles was particularly useful, if buggy).

This stuff is still all about 2 years away from being ready for the mainstream, but the strides being made in 1) capturing useful imagery and 2) presenting it in a way that is increasingly useful to users; is amazing.

See you on Wed/Thurs at NewComm Robert :)
