in BrothersJudd Blog: NOT THAT ANYONE COULD BEAT HIM, BUT JEB CAN RUN UNOPPOSED: on Brothersjudd Forum
OJ - Clinton had the MSM covering his back. Palin had the MSM stabbing her every day. Big difference.

As for Jeb the only way he has a chance is if W's legacy is completely rehabilitated by 2011. O's incompetence may make it possible but it is still a long shot.

in BrothersJudd Blog: HILLARYCARE REDUX: on Brothersjudd Forum
The Dems have the votes to pass. They need to pass it quickly before people understand how bad it is (like the "stimulus" bill which no Congresscritter read). That's why the GOP needs to slow it down so that the word can get out. Watch for a push to vote on it after O and ABC's HealthCare propogandafest on 6/24 and after.

orrinj They can't get the votes of the guys in Red seats.
Brad Schwartze There will not be a "markup" of the legislation until after the July 4 recess. Which gives all involved in opposition the appropriate time necessary to kill this in the crib.

And we have yet to get to the term "bond vigilante." Which, to tell the truth, was a bigger factor in shutting down HillaryCare the last time around than any sort of bumbling on the Dems part.

OJ - to Ed's point the reelection rate for Congress critters is what - 95%? Their goal is to pass something now and if people start to complain they'll just say they will fix it in the future (which turns out to be never)

orrinj The 95%ers don't matter. Control of Congress changes regularly now and Bill Clinton is the only two term Democrat since FDR.

in BrothersJudd Blog: DEAD ON ARRIVAL: on Brothersjudd Forum
The Dems will support it and the GOP will oppose it. With the Dem majority in the House and the Senate rules being changed that only 50 votes will be needed this will pass. Too many Congresscritters will fall for the "its historic legislation" meme and vote for it.

You've never heard of the Small Business Administration which securitizes small business loans, guarantees them, and sells them to financial institutions? An institution I used to work at had several billion of these securities.

The amount of SBA securitized securities is much smaller than mortgages but that is primarily due to the homogenous nature of mortgages which makes them easier to bundle and sell.

Generally agree. Although your criticism of Reagan not strangling SS is not based in reality. In the early 1980s stock ownership by individuals through 401Ks and other means was in its infancy - the concept of privatizing SS was too far out there at the time to be a realistic option. Even 20+ yrs later, after invidiuals have been using 401Ks etc, SS reform was not possible.

Daniels is right that the GOP needs to take Reagan's ideals but stop putting his name on them so that they are not dismissed by anti-Reagan forces. Jeb was (hopefully) saying the same thing a few months ago but said it so poorly that it sparked a minor backlash.

If O and the Dems continue on their present course a message of smaller and effective govt should be a big winner for the GOP in 2010 and 2012

orrinj No, he couldn't have privatized it. He could have done nothing instead of saving it.

This is pie in the sky dreaming that smaller states can be run more efficiently. There is no evidence of this (i.e. Mass should be one of the best run states but it isn't). Unless DC is willing to give up control and follow the 10th amendment (and the pattern for the past 40 yrs has been DC taking on more control over teh states) this isn't going to happen.

California wasn't too big to govern until the past 20 years. And what happened since then? primarily the unionization of public employees which makes it almost impossible to reduce government in the face of an economic slowdown. Arnold wanted to cut govt employees to reduce the CA budget deficit and was thwarted by the unions and O. Saw a stat recently that while unemployment has been shooting up public sector employment has been steady and even increasing. This is an issue that is affecting all states, not just CA
1 reply
orrinj's picture
orrinj there's massive evidence for it. Look at any ranking of states by freedom, economic development, etc. The vast majority share three characteristics: populations under 40 million, Protestantism, membership in the Anglosphere, geographic isolation. Only an earthquake will make California an archipelago, but the rest is there.

This result was as predictable as Chavez or Hussein's 99% vote wins. The reform movement in Iran is large enough to make some noise but not enough to challenge the ruling structure. The ruling structure (which is all for nuking Israel and doesn't care about the economic conditions of the Iranian people) will deal with a few days of rioting and then it will be back to business as usual.

OJ is just happy that another mushy GOPer who will vote with the Ds more than the Rs is currently leading in the polls. Crist raised taxes breaking a no-new taxes pledge? No big deal. Crist said he strongly supported the increasingly obvious useless spending bill unlike the rest of the GOP party? No big deal.

Turnout was very low - most put it at less than 20% of the Dem voters. MacAuliffe was personally disliked by many and had a carpetbagger stigma. Moran wasn't taken seriously. While Dems will probably rally around Deeds in the fall the very low Dem turnout for a competitive primary can't be good news for them. And as O falls in popularity he will take Deeds with him.

in BrothersJudd Blog: IMAGINE WHAT THEIR POLLS ARE TELLING THEM?: on Brothersjudd Forum
Same old DC BS. In Democrat terms PayGo means no stax cuts at all and simply raise taxes to cover spending increases. And O's claim that the TARP is profitable only is accurate if a) all the banks pay bank without any losses, and b) you ignore the TARP funds diverted to the auto companies which are still losing money hand over fist.

"the (Democratic) party needs to distance itself from the teachers' unions". Yeah that'll happen at the same time that African-Americans stop voting 90% for the Dems. Just look at the Dems killing the DC voucher program for evidence of their "new" approach to education.

You really aren't paying attention if you think O is going to attack Iran. The most plausible scenario is that O continues to press Israel, not Iran, for concessions. The only way Iran gets attacked is if Israel feels it has no other choice and doesn't care what O "the US is a muslim nation" has to say.

in BrothersJudd Blog: THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU JUST CAN'T EXPLAIN TO THE HOUSE GOP: on Brothersjudd Forum
Exactly backward OJ. The quick repayment of the TARP funds shows that the TARP wasn't needed as the House GOP argued And note the $1.8BN and $4.6BN interest figures do not factor in the interest the US Government paid on borrowing the TARP money from the marketplace so any "profits" from the TARP to the government are smaller than those claimed.

orrinj Yes, the point was never the funds themselves, just the fund itself. It was just a crisis of confidence.
