If you mean effiiency on your part, in typing etc., i ALWAYS enter addresses that are prepended with "www." and appened with ".com" as the body followed by ctrl+enter. You should try this. so, in the address bar, you would type wired then hit ctrl+enter and then www.wired.com appears in the address bar. All that I can figure w/o more research is that this combination of key works in win 2000 and up, mozilla, and IE, and only with www.___.com addys. I may play w/ it some more to give you more info if you want it. Let me know if you already do this regularly so that I may attack myself appropriately.

Re: The Mars Volta

w00t!! I am going to have to move next year to begin working on a phd program, and I know that there is absolutely no way that I am going to get out of the apartment thing, and settle down. Not to mention, I would be absolutely miserable without my weekly trip to Waffle House at 3a.m., or my unscheduled trips to some random place just because it is the weekend. BTW - Kind of unrelated, but Tallahassee is looking like more and more of a reality for me.

--Brad

Re: The Gods Favor Me

well damn.

Re: Bands: Avenged Sevenfold

You are absolutely correct. I will continue to rip any cd that I purchase to my iPod. If I purchase an album, I consider that to be my property to distribute freely among my various media players (cd player in the car, iPod, winamp, etc.). Imagine buying a copy in the store to listen to in the car, and then a separate copy for use on portable players. That would have to be one of the worst ideas ever.

Re: New Stuff

damn! 325i? After each one, take a break for 10 minutes or so.
2) Eat and drink healthy things.
3) Total immersion is the key. If you dont have a lot of time, spend every waking moment thinking about this material and going over it in your head. Study. break. study. break. eat. ....But whatever you do, don't try to study other, irrelevant material. You will either distract yourself from the real material or just get confused at crunch time.
4) Don't try to "cram". Staying up all night trying to study leaves you with not enough sleep and you will have a harder time focusing on it the next time you pick it up.

Either way, this has worked very well for me and seems to get the job done as long as i have a few days (or, hopefully more) to devote to it. Good luck on the test and let me know how everything comes out.

Re: Chick-Fil-A

The one true problem with Chic-Fil-A is mentionted above but needs to be emphasized. To give my opinion on each of these points...

be passionate about it - I can not even begin to decribe the out-of-work work that I do. I spend easily 10-20 hours/wk at my favorite local coffee shop simply studying material and learning more about optimization and other things that interest me within the field. I also work endlessly on writing code and researching for my personal benefit. I do this b/c I love programming.

Be An Engineer, Not A Technician - This should go without saying. If you don't understand how your code works, you don;t understand your code. You also, without knowing the way things work, are lessening your ability to improvise and create more efficient and effective solutions. Example - you can live without regular expressions, but if you do, you are an idiot.

Don’t Be Intimidated By Anything - Intimidation leads ultimately to ignorance. If you let something that you do not understand intimidate you, You are missing out on an opportunity to further your abilities and hone your skill set.
Combine Book Knowledge with Hands-On - I couldn't agree more with this. I can "accidentally" learn all kinds of great tricks and pick up great reasoning behind things by reading through a good programming book. I can also take a book with me in places that I have no wireless signal (airplane, roadtrip, etc.).

Sharpen Your Communication Skills - I completely agree with Dr. M on this one. Without good communication skills, you have no ability to express your intentions or plans for implementation of a project to a group. You may also run into trouble when trying to get a projects expectations from a customer. Then there is the fact that without a decent ability to communicate your knowledge and talents, you are setting yourself up for failure when it comes to finding a job in the first place. Overall, without the ability to communicate effectively, you will always sell yourself short.

Keep In Mind That There Are People Out There That Make You Look Silly - All the time. But, without that, what motivation (other than a passion for the field) do you have to improve? People often seem to get lazy when they are in an obvoiusly dominant position. I also feel that, by thinking that you are "the best guy out there" you are closing off a lot of doors simply because if someone feels this way, they are often of the mindset that anyone that they discuss something with knows less than they do and can't possibly teach themanything new and interesting. This is wrong.

To wrap up here, I can say that these are definately rules to live by, and that everyone that want to be a "guru" in their given field should take note of these rules and find a way to apply them to their everyday lives. And that, good sir, would be my two cents.

--tbwolfe

Re: Zelda?

i played a Wii this past weekend and it is by far the most unique gaming experience I have ever had. Same problem with the Linux argument and a few other choice words and phrases. By the way, I got bored and looked up the Malcom X thing...

In 1952, after his release from prison, Malcolm went to meet Elijah Muhammad in Chicago. It was soon after this that he changed his surname to "X". Malcolm explained the name by saying, The "X" is meant to symbolize the rejection of "slave-names" and the absence of an inherited African name to take its place. The "X" is also the brand that many slaves received on their upper arm. This rationale led many members of the Nation of Islam to change their surnames to X.

I would have had no idea. It seemed to work fine with simple "Hello World" type programs, but as the programs that I tested got more complex, it began to fail. In case you want it, here is my "Result":

(08:38:11) : Can't locate object method "new" via package "Benchmark" (perhaps you forgot to load "Benchmark"?) at /var/www/basic/lib/WPLib.pm line 304.

I get that when trying to run the following:

#!usr/bin/perl

use strict;

my $x;
my $count;
my @y;
my $y;

sub foo{
$count  ;
if($count'2'){@y[$count] = @y[($count-1)] @y[($count-2)];}
if($count;
if($x=~m/[0-9] / && $x0){foo();}
elsif($x>20||$x

I have tried to remove the strict module and all of my "my" statements, but nothing seems to work. There is some other code that is cut as well, but this is actually a working Perl script when completely intact. All it does is find the first >i>n numbers of the Fibonacci sequence where the user inputs n, but when I can manage to get the code together, it does work. =) The @ is just the list and the [blah] is an element of that list. I was just playing around by writing it that way. It is mostly all out of whack b/c I am giving this to my interviewees(sp?) to hand trace as one of my tests / interview questions for the positions that I am hiring for. I want to make sure that they can hand trace code, so I have bad names for the vars and some strange notation (as well as no comments) to try to throw them off and at least challenge them slightly. If you want the complete code, though, I would be happy to mail the correct .pl file to you.

Re: Encrypted Blog Copyrights?

sitting on my server now. I love it. That's right, I love some Ruby. One of our newer programmers uses it because it is less syntactically intimidating than Perl, but basically just as powerful. There are things that I strongly prefer Perl to Ruby for (RegEx primarily), but there are things that I do prefer Ruby for (I love the syntax to handle DB connections, for example). Overall, I just prefer Perl to Ruby, but I would say that both are really good at what they do. My preference for Perl is primarily based on familiarity and ease of use for what I do.

Re: Automating OS X Updates Using CronniX

does Cronnix work in a similar fashion to crontabs in Linux?

Re: Automating OS X Updates Using CronniX

Very nice! I would say that 80% of the places that I buy food/music/drinks at are locally owned for that reason. When I go to these places, I feel as if my business is appreciated and the person behind the counter actually has an interest in what they do. Take, for example, the coffee shop that I frequent. There are 6 or 7 branches of this place total, and everyone that works at any given branch will be friendly, take an interest in getting your order correct, and make you feel as if your order is actually important to them. Since I have been going there, they have also maintained a fairly steady cast of employees. I just can't see why anyone would frequent any place that allows their employees to be assholes and unprofessional. It is bad for business and for the company's reputation.

Re: Grassroots Atheist Video

Good video. One problem is that i have one candidate from each of the two major parties that interests me. Dem: Barack Obama, Rep: Ron Paul. I am far from making my concrete decision, but I can say that I am not a fan of any of the other candidates so far (in either party). I am keeping up with as much as possible so that I can make the most informed decision possible. I am also confident that if everyone doesn't research candidates thoroughly, we will continue on our current downward path. Thanks for the links, everyone, as that will give me more information on which to base my decision.

Re: Black Teacher In Chicago Teaches Black Students Not To Say “Axe” When They Mean “Ask”

I saw this last week and loved it. The blue is nice, but at $8-10 each they can get pricey. also note that at 9%, it has a bit more alcohol than many beers, so take it easy on these.
Corona (or almost any Mexican beer)& a lime. - You really can't go wrong with a coooold Corona, a lime and hot weather.

Also, you may try Terrapin Cream if it is available there. It is brewed here in Athens, GA and I am not sure about it's distribution level. I just know that it is a) good, b) easily available, and c) i can get a pitcher of it for $7 at happy hour at the pizza and beer shack across the street from my apartment. :)

Let me know how these work out.

Also, you should try a mojito if you get a chance. (Be sure to only buy one from a place that uses fresh mint leaves ) Maybe it is because it has been super hot lately, but these are f-ing amazing if they are made properly.

Mojito Ingredients:
3  	 sprigs   fresh mint
2 	teaspoons sugar
3 tablespoons lemon juice or lime juice, fresh
1 1/2 	ounces light rum
club soda, chilled

Directions:
1. In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside.
2. Add the sugar and lemon juice and stir thoroughly.
3. Top with ice.
4. Add rum and mix.
5. Top off with the club soda (or seltzer).
6. Add a lemon slice and the remaining mint.
7. Serves one.

That seems correct.

Re: What Every American Should Know About Iraq

wow.

Re: The New Great Bands

I would suggest checking out The Fall of Troy as well. definitely "math rock" (odd time and really technical). If you can get your hands on an album, go for it. The two two that I have are Doppelganger and Manipulator. They impress me, but are not as "epic" as The Mars Volta or Coheed. Not even close. But, they have some really nice rhythms and guitar patterns. They have videos on YouTube, but all of them suck as far as sound. Overall, the singer reminds me of a cross between cedric from mars volta and claudio from coheed with a little more screaming. I think that there are some pretty good arguments either way. I tend to think that (at least to some degree) we do contribute, but need more evidence to be convinced. My idea is that it doesn't hurt to be "green", so why not do it. I walk to work every day. I recycle as many items as possible at home and work(we are lucky enough to have really good programs, both at home and at work). I don't print anything that isn't absolutely necessary. There are several other examples. The point is that all of these are free or even save money and contribute to better air quality, less garbage in landfills, and less traffic in the street. So, why not.

Re: Did You Know Notepad Could Do This?

That's pretty cool.

Re: A New Take on McCain’s VP Pick

In addition to the pro-life thing, she has lots of vulnerability in a debate. Here is another possible talking point. In only a few days, she has a term associated with her platform on energy...

"Within hours of Senator John McCain picking Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, the talking heads of CNBC had coined a new term: "Palinomics." In a nutshell, the doctrine stands for expanding the search for domestic oil and gas as a solution to the energy crisis."

I think that everyone else believes that it is time to start looking elsewhere for sources of energy, she says KEEP DRILLING!!! Is she from Texas?

There is also controversy going on about a possible misuse of power in trying to get someone fired. That is still under investigation, I think.

Also, "Palin opposes same-sex marriage and supported a non-binding referendum for a constitutional amendment to deny benefits to same-sex couples." -- Wikipedia

She is a member of Feminists For Life, a pro-life feminist group.

She does not believe global warming is man made.

She doesn't think that polar bears are endangered.

She supports aerial hunting of wolves (yes, from a helicopter or other vantage point). This one seems ridiculous. If anything screams "let's blow some cash!", it is chartering a helicopter flight to find and shoot wolves for trophy.

Anyway, these are a few reasons that I am interested in John McCain's VP selection. She sounds like a disaster. I have been listening to it for a few days b/c I couldn't wait to hear it. I finally bought it today, and I have to say that it keeps getting better and better. right now, I am only letting myself listen to the entire album, no skipping. after a while, I'm sure that i will begin to listen to select songs, but at first, I liked the album, now, I am amazed by it. every time i go through, I find something new. definately worth the time spent acquiring it. (had to wait at the store for two hours until the shipment came in)....

Re: A Funny Time

one problem:
in the U.S. representation of time, it would be
01:02:03 5/4/06
in the standard European representation,
01:02:03 5/4/06.

For us, it would have happened on April 5, 2006,
but we do still have June 6th (6/6/06) to look forward to as far as dates that make interesting number representations are concerned.

Re: A Funny Time

change the European representation to :

01:02:03 4/5/06...sorry

Re: The CISA Exam

couple of thoughts:
1) Study often and for short (45min - 1hr max) time periods.

I have a hard time explaining to people that I would prefer to hear "Oh Es Ten". Many of them refuse to believe that it is not actually "Ex".

Enough already, just go buy it.
Also, which Mars Volta have you been listening to lately?

Re: New Laptop: 15″MacBook Pro

dude, just got mine ordered today!

My girlfriend is from Germany and in high school, they choose either two majors or a major and a minor. They also have three different high school options in most places. There is one option to go for nine years (Hauptschule). This is for mostly vocational occupations. ANother option is for ten years (Realschule). This is an intermediate option. The third option is for those who plan to go to college, and is a 13 year school (Gymnasium). I think that giving the option for students to get a High School Diploma for vocational work earlier and only keeping the students around that plan to further their education would drastically improve drop out rates, and better prepare students for college and beyond since there is a better teacher to student ratio.

Re: A Mobile GeoLocation App That Doesn’t Give Location Updates Without User Intervention Isn’t a Mobile GeoLocation App

Running applications in the background should solve this, but I wonder if the inclusion of background apps would destroy the already short battery life. I have been wondering about ways to include this without too much overhead, and am thinking of a few possible solutions. One would be to only allow programs to run in the background as jobs that update status and basic information, such as GPS info. This would be a limited implementation of backgrounding, but a good start. Think of this as a basic cron job. You set the parameters for frequency of updates, and this pseudo-cron is updated. The problem that I keep running into is the "sandbox". Since the apps run in a "sandbox" and don't live outside of that, I am pretty sure that you would not be able to write an app that writes to the Core Services Layer. To finish this rambling, a single app that would allow you to set up these crons would most likely suffice. It would be a "nerfed" implementation of backgrounding, but could serve to alleviate some of the most common headaches.

I agree with Carl about the $99 developer account for the most part, but I do have mixed feelings in some areas. I feel that if they charged $100 for XCode from the beginning and gave everyone access, it would seem more accessible. I have also been thinking about the possibility that the fee is in place to force a developer/developers to actually consider the value of the apps that they create. Imagine, if everyone had access to post apps for review, a) how much longer the (already very long) approval process would be and b) how many (more) redundant applications would be out there. We would end up with 500 fart apps because there is no skill in writing them. My ideal solution would be to pay per application submitted, but allow for free personal use and distribution to friends and associates.

Also, if there are any other iPhone developers, tinkerers, or people familiar with the OS Structure, please let me know where I am wrong.

Re: A Mobile GeoLocation App That Doesn’t Give Location Updates Without User Intervention Isn’t a Mobile GeoLocation App

If you haven't already done so, I would recommend getting the SDK set up and writing some apps before deciding. This is free, and you only have to pay once you are either ready to begin submitting work for approval or deploying to physical devices. The included emulator is nice and provides much of the basic functionality. It will also allow you to get familiar with the SDK before your "subscription" begins.

The SDK is located in the downloads section at apple.com/developer. All you have to have to get it is a (free) developer account.
