in An alternative to password confirmation on The Pug Automatic
I'm been having similar thoughts recently about shortening forms by removing a password field, but the answer I decided on (though haven't yet implemented) is to just remove the confirmation field.

If someone mistypes their password, the next time they try to log in, it will fail and they should use your (hopefully very easy) "Forgot Your Password" feature. They'll get their password and go "doh" and all will be fine.

I would guess there is a high correlation between people who forget their password a lot and are used to using the FYP, and people who mistype their password.

I'd like to see some data on how often people make a mistake into those boxes. I bet it's a very, very low percentage.

It's Pinot Noir by the way, not Penoit Noir, unless, as is very likely, I've missed some clever joke.
