in I Guess I'm Doing Something Wrong on A VC
The niche the website is in very important. I know loads of sites that get the same traffic or less than a lot of my sites, and many of them make more!

The amount of revenue per visitor gets better the more niche a site is, from what evidence I regularly see. Obviously the more niche a site is, the less visitors interested about the site. It's gaining the right balance.

in Too many social networking aggregators? on Futuristic Play by @Andrew_Chen

Not enough by far :P I started a UK equivalent of Digg for numerous reasons. If you build it and people come then there's always a need!

In the future if they die out, so what, let the best ones win.

in This Girl Invented Her Own Virulent Strain of Affluenza on dmiessler.com | grep understanding

It might seem really bad but kids at that age don't realise how un- reasonable they're being. You see it all the time at birthday parties where the star of the show ends up acting like a spoilt brat.

Most kids grow up and come down to earth but if she doesn't then let the real world kick her hard in the ass.

in An Introductory Guide to Startup Funding on Instigator Blog
I have a couple web startups of my own that are quite solid in usefulness and code wise but I have read many variants that boil down to saying that a great website is just a tool and that a website needs heavily promoting to get it a significant amount of publicity and consistent traffic.

This promoting or marketing stage is where I think a lot of the finance is needed. Many of the most popular "web 2" sites around at the moment have had a big investment near the beginning to get it out to the public and make the site seem busy/populated.

And from how I see it the best chance of getting investment is to have a great idea that really is unique. Then that site naturally becomes the leader in its field, any similar sites built after it are merely in its shadow.

Now, I just need to think of this idea and somehow have the time to build it into a useable product to show off and gain investment from! ;)

In regards to the colour contrast issue I use sites like colorjack and colourlovers to take most of the thinking out of the colour choosing process!

in Ubuntu and Steam on Mostly Harmless
Hopefully it'll run ok with Wine games. Got a radeon 9550 and from all the guides I've followed, enabling restricted drivers etc, I still can't get compiz fusion to work or get the 3d screensavers built into ubuntu to run as fast as they would in windows. Even minimizing and maximizing windows lags ever so slightly.
