Otherwise, I might not have seen this until I checked my RSS feeds (like you taught me) later in the day. Later today, I will publish a new post (like you taught me) and put the finishing touches on Age of Conversation 2 (giving back -- like you taught me). So this social media stuff is working for me! :)

I've been blessed all my life with amazing teachers and you have certainly been one of those for me. I continue to learn from you every day and have no doubt that will continue. I'm pretty clear on who is the coach!

Despite all of that...the best thing to come out of that Panera encounter (of course!) was the friendship we now share. I love you too.

Thanks for the unexpected shout out and kind words. Not sure I've earned them all, but I'll stay at the plate swinging, until I do!

Drew

Re: Others First - It Just Takes One

Mike,

It's pretty tough to think less of a person simply because they're human. The reality is -- everyone of us has been in a place where we couldn't do it alone. I think the man who allows his ego to step in the way of other's support and help is the shameful one. They were offered a helping hand but pride got in the way.

I think it takes a man of incredible courage to recognize and be humble enough to acknowledge that life has knocked him to his knees and he needs a hand to get back up on his feet. He is the stronger man of the two because he knows that you don't rebuff God's gift of the helping hands/hearts. Even when it tugs at his pride.

You and I have talked about your story before. I will tell you now what I told you then. God always litters our path with what/who we need. I'm grateful you were a strong enough man to accept the help, so that you could serve so many others down the road.

Drew

Re: But ... I think it also depends on who your blog is aimed at/who your audience is. Many of our colleagues are blogging to the social media crowd. So I assume they're making their living by serving that population.

So BlogWorld etc. is right on the money for them. Especially, if they have a book to sell or their blog is generating revenue with ads.

Let's face it -- we're ahead of the curve on this one. So the presentation we've give at BlogWorld to our peers is incredibly different from one you'd give the PRSA club or I'd give to a bunch of rural electric co-op presidents.

What I love about talking to non-social media "believers" is that there are truly some remarkable tools they just don't know about. We can have impact on how they do business. Which, I think, is the way to invite them into the realm of social media. Make it valuable to them.

Good discussion starter!

Drew

Re: Are You Overwhelmed With Everything You Need to Track?

Ben,

Boy, DO I hear you with this. Frankly, I think not responding when someone comments is just rude. I just spoke to a national association today and I used a very similar analogy. We were talking about their fundraising efforts and I likened them to walking up to a stranger in an airport and asking for $300 versus asking a friend for the same amount.

People get so enamored with their own product/service that they forget they need to woo their audiences before going in for the big pitch.

Your post is a great reminder -- keep up the smart writing!

Re: Slideshare offers tools for presenters

John,

I agree -- Slideshare is an excellent tool! Trying to look inconspicuous in AF or Hollister. Close enough to offer an opinion when asked (and of course, to pay) but not too close that I’m hovering or God forbid, some of her friends walk in.

For the guy commenters — here is some unsolicited advice. Be brave enough to wade into the water. My daughter and I have had some amazing conversations because I entered her world.

Does it make me less of a dork? Probably not. Today.

Added benefit — after 14 years of shopping together and me commenting on the appropriateness or lack thereof in some of the clothing options — I have never had my daughter buy something I wouldn’t let her wear. She sees the clothes through both her and my eyes.

Drew

PS — Ann, this was a long time in coming. Very nice.

Re: ‘Hey, Pretty Lady!’

Ann,

You have uncovered one of men's guilty secrets. There is a decadent pleasure in the airport shoe shine.

I think it's a blend of indulgence and pampering mixed with the lingering memory of the men we used to see getting a shine...and how we probably thought they looked important in their nice suits and fancy shoes.

If I am flying and know I have a decent layover, I'll purposely wear shoes that can be shined. Just for the fun of it.

It puts a little pep in my walk for some reason. But that alone is worth the $10.

Drew

Re: Birthday Boy

Ann,

When words fail us...just sending you a hug from one parent's heart to another.

Drew

Re: Painting A Picture

Ann,

Someone did tell you that jumping is actually not a part of bowling, right?

And, I am positive if we could somehow see the other side of the visual....your concentration would be evident by the tip of your tongue sticking out from between your lips!

Drew

Re: Feeding the Media Snackers

Chris,

I think one of the dangers of this media snacker idea is that it runs the risk of painting people with just one brush.

I don't care if you're 14 or 44 or 84, odds are -- you take in your information in a variety of ways, depending on a mix of factors.

There's no doubt this is a trend that perhaps is shifting from trend to mainstream reality, it's so prevalent. So do we need to offer up selections built just for the media snacker? You bet.

But we should also be putting some meat on the bone for when our readers want to gnaw on things in a bit more detail.

Your posts are a good blend of quick hits and more detailed, thought evoking posts. I think it's wise of us to offer the best of both worlds, don't you?

Drew

Re: Books, Libros, Bücher, Libri, Livros, 本, 书, книги

Chris,

Thanks for playing along! Agreed on the lure and power of a good book. Your list had a notable work focus.

Are those your pleasure books too or are you just on a marketing jag? I get in a groove and will burn through a bunch of business books and then crave a good mystery or 3 (or visa versa).

I'm going to check out Bill Peet's book -- thanks for the suggestion.

Drew

Re: Creativity Contest: Last Call

Whew....got in just under the wire. I don't know about you, but I was pretty enamored with the campaign. I thought it was bold and memorable.

Guess for the CEO, his ss# was a little too memorable!

Drew
