So, this attack was an act of hypocrisy.

This incident explains why so many nonbelievers choose to keep their views to themselves. There is a very real fear of acts of retribution and violence from Christians. Christians are using terrorist tactics to prevent critics from exposing the fraud of Christianity.

Re: 10 Quick Tips

Awesome! I know how you feel because I used to be like you. You believe so strongly in your religion and its such an important part of your life that when doubts surface you want nothing more than to find an explanation. I sincerely believed in my religion and I wanted nothing more than to convince my wife of the truth of Christianity. But like I said apologetics just stopped working for me after a few months. I just couldn't pretend anymore that there were reasonable explanations for everything because my wife always had a good reason why the apologetics were wrong.

I have a friend who said Mark 9 verse 1 was the undoing of his faith. "And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."" Now, Jesus is saying that some of his followers will live to see the second coming, the end times, whatever you want to call it. Well, 2000 years later it still hasn't happened and of course all of Jesus' followers are dead. So, my friend read the apologetics, which satisfied him for a while. But nagging questions kept popping up. He talked to his pastor, his friends, he prayed about yet he still was troubled by it. It took five years but he finally decided that Christians were a bunch of fools waiting for an event that Jesus had said was going to happen 2000 years ago.

The reason I included the quote from William Kingdon Clifford is because it is so true. When you hold a strong belief or have a strong desire to believe something you won't entertain questions that throw any doubt on that belief. "No man holding a strong belief on one side of a question, or even wishing to hold a belief on one side, can investigate it with such fairness and completeness as if he were really in doubt and unbiassed;"

The are two kinds of exbelievers: those who have always had doubts and those who were strong believers who then had an experience or revelation that created doubt. My wife is the former. When she found out that Santa Claus was make believe she asked her parents if God was also make believe. She was grounded for a week. I am the latter type of exbeliever as you can see from my testimony.

Christian apologetics won't convince me that Christianity is true; Islamic apologetics will not convince me that Islam is true; Hindu apologetics won't convince me that Hinduism is true and so on.

Also, Catholicism was the first unified church. Until Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire there were multiple Christian sects with varying beliefs and doctrines. Some believed in the divinity of Jesus, some did not. When Christianity became the official religion of Rome these various sects got together and established a unified theology. They voted on whether Jesus was divine or not and divinity won. They also decided which gospels and books would make up the Bible. Members of any sect who didn't want to join this new unified Catholic (universal) church faced persecution and often murder. So, yes, Catholicism really is the original Christian faith and every other faith came from it.

Re: My wife lost her faith - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

"who wants wimpy malcontents in your house, just there to get away from the rain?! If you are in his house, it's because you BELIEVE, and believe in spite of the secularists, the liberals, the ACLU and all the other God haters who are trying to wish away the final judgment that they, in the back of their minds, know is acoming."

These are exactly the kind of over-emotional arguments made by people who have a desire to believe but cannot defend those beliefs using evidence and rationality.

By the way, many liberals are churchgoers. Is your knowledge of the world so limited that you don't know that?

Re: My wife lost her faith - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

/an,

Nope, Jesus is clearly talking about the Second Coming, End Times. Claiming that he is referring to the Pentecost is simply apologetics. My friend did consider that possibility, because like I said he spent five years struggling with this question.

Here is the problem with the Pentecost theory. If you read the epistles of Paul, he clearly believed that Jesus was going to return very soon. Why do you think Paul thought celibacy to be superior to marriage? Because he believed the end was coming, before all of Jesus' disciples tasted death, therefore marriage and childbearing were no longer necessary.

1 Corinthians 7
26Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for you to remain as you are. 27Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look for a wife. 28But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. 29What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short.

Now I'm sure you'll tell me that no, no Paul was talking about something else. That is the nice thing about the Bible. If any verse doesn't make sense you can always pretend that it was actually referring to something else.

Like I said this particular issue led to the unraveling of my friend's faith not mine. I spent months questioning, reading, studying and debating before I came to the conclusion that Christianity was simply another myth and that the God of the Christians is just as much myth as the ancient gods of the Greeks, Romans, Druids, and Egyptians.

Re: My wife lost her faith - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

/an,

Another thing. I would encourage you to dig a little deeper. I did an awful lot of digging and I concluded that Christianity is not true.

Did you ever entertain the possibility that your religion is false? If you have never truely and honestly examined it from all perspectives, scriptural, historical, and scientific you have no right to claim that it is true.

Re: My wife lost her faith - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Jamie,

I'm sure that it was not easy being raised an agnostic/atheist (which were you, they're very different) when everyone around you believes in a supernatural being or beings. But I can easily see someone who was raised as an atheist or agnostic becoming a believer, especially since Christians will try so hard to "save" someone like you.

But an exbeliever who becomes an atheist or agnostics will rarely go back. We have dug so deep into our belief systems and found them to be contradictory, cruel and false it would be almost impossible for us to believe again.

Also, you said that you had an experience that convinced you that God exists. Well, people have had experiences like alien abductions that have convinced them that beings from outer space regularly visit Earth. Do you believe their experiences?

Re: Trying to find peace in my soul - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

dce,

"One even referred me to a quote by a Pope in 300 ACE which went something like this, "This myth of the christ has served us most profitably.""

I read about a survey of Protestant clergy that was done in Britain several years ago. One third did not believe Jesus was the son of God. The more time you spend studying Christianity, or any other religion, the harder it is to believe.

A lot of priests, ministers, imams and rabbis don't truly belive but they have made a career out of religion and either don't know how to do anything else or don't want to do anything else.

I know an excatholic priest who remained a priest for six years after losing his faith. He remained a priest for several reasons. He enjoyed the respect and power. The church supported him financially and he really didn't know how to do anything else. He also enjoyed serving his congregation and helping the people in the poor immigrant parish he served. He finally left to get married but it took him a while to get used to life in the real world.

I often wonder how many clergy really are believers and how many are just doing the job for the respect and power. And for the evangelicals how many are just doing it for the money.

Re: Still Holding On - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

I don't know if the French are more unhappy than Americans but if they are I'm sure it's mainly the result of a bad economy. You have rejected the virgin birth and biblical inerrancy. I'm not sure if you're aware of the changes made by biblical scribes over the centuries. Check out the book "Misquoting Jesus."

Keep searching and I'm sure you will eventually see Christianity the way exbelievers see it.

I'm wondering do you believe in the story of Adam and Eve, original sin, six days of creation?

Re: Fantasy versus Reality - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Mike,

The reason I ask about Adam and Eve is because Jesus was supposedly sent to suffer and die to atone for the original sin committed by Adam and Eve. If Adam and Eve are a myth then it was not necessary for God to send his son to die for that sin. What is your view on this?

Re: Fantasy versus Reality - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Bear,

Let me give you a brief history of Christianity.

-Jesus lived, preached, and died
-Multiple Christian sects formed and about all they could agree on was they were followers of Jesus
-A few hundred years later they got together and said we're all Christians but we don't agree on much, so lets devise a unified set of doctrines. They did and became the official universal Roman church
-The eastern Christians didn't much like the western Christians. When the pope implemented celibacy they thought enough is enough. Let's break away and they did. They created the various eastern orthodox churches
-Hundreds of years later people like Luther, Calvin, Swedenborg, etc. had problems with Catholic doctrine. They thought to themselves this doesn't make sense, so I better fix it. They went to the Bible and created their own doctrines. Of course, others had problems with these new doctrines and so decided to fix them using the Bible as their source
-The Bible is not very reliable. Even Peter and Paul couldn't agree with each other. Paul thought that you could only be saved by faith. Good works were a cynical attempt to bribe God. Peter thought this was hogwash and said faith without works was useless. As a result, the number of new Christian sects, or splintering Christian sects, all proclaiming to have found the truth, has mushroomed. And this is where we now find ourselves today.

Re: Fantasy versus Reality - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Mike,

"There is truth in the bible though."

How can you possibly know which parts are true and which parts aren't? This is why religious institutions exist. You give them your money and the right to dictate even the most intimate aspects of your life. What do you get in return? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

What do they get? Money and power. I know plenty of spiritual people who see no reason to have religious institutions act as an intermediary between them and God. If God does exist, what exactly are the various religions and houses of worship doing to bring you closer to him/her. They are not doing anything you can't do on your own.

So, to sum up, religions exist to rip off and oppress gullible believers.

Re: Insiders story of big church politics and wrong doing - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Leroy Sutton,

Of course, he was a Christian. A Christian is someone who believes Jesus is their savior. How they arrived at that conclusion doesn't have any relevance.

Most people who are Christian never had anything that they believed was a supernatural experience. By your definition probably 99% of people who claim to be Christian really aren't.

Re: Insiders story of big church politics and wrong doing - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Leroy Sutton,

John 3:6-8
6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[a] gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

John 3:2-4
2He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." 3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." 4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"

Ok, define the meaning of born again based on the above verses. It doesn't specify the need for a supernatural experience.

So, anyone who says I believe Jesus is my savior and who believes they feel the presence of a spirit is a Christian. In fact, you could say a person is born again each time they acknowledge this belief.

"I would never be so bold or presumptious as to profess to know what another man is or is not thinking."

You were bold and presumptious because you professed to know what YouJon was thinking when he converted to Christianity.

Re: Insiders story of big church politics and wrong doing - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Jeff,

Let me guess. Who knows though. I've met people who had a bad experience in their church that started a process of questioning that eventually led them to abandon their faith. But, yeah, some "atheists" or "agnostics" do reconvert because they acted out of anger and never discovered that Christianity was baloney.

Re: Insiders story of big church politics and wrong doing - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

LS,

You're very much a literalist, aren't you? Brainwashing is more of an emotional term. A person who was raised Christian by their parents, who went to church and Bible study, had some experience their church told them was supernatural, etc. will feel like they've been brainwashed when they realise it's all a myth.

Re: Insiders story of big church politics and wrong doing - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Onanite,

"My experience with many Christians over decades also points to their inability to step back from the rhetoric they have been taught and think their positions and statement through."

If they did this they would no longer believe in Christianity. Your particular brand of Christianity probably teaches that but there is no Biblical basis for that belief. One is considered a Christian if they accept Jesus as their Lord and savior. A perceived spiritual experience is not necessary.

"believe as you do and I believe as I do."

You have specifically come to this exchristian support site to try to convince people to think like you. You want to convince us that we were never real Christians because we never had a vision or spoke in tongues or whatever you believe is required to make one a "real" Christian. But you have no Biblical "proof" to back up your claim.

Re: Insiders story of big church politics and wrong doing - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

"LS: You’ve already erred once – presupposing that Jeff was a Christian when he was not... I would give up on God because that help never came. Then a few years later I would come back because I was so desperate for help. Still there was no answer to the tearful pleas. No comfort from God, no healing of the deep depression. Nothing."

I'm pretty cut about your story, and I can see how someone could move from what you did believe to what you now do.

I would like to ask though:
What help were you after? What comfort and healing? I ask these things not because I doubt your ernesty in asking, but because there are many Christians who too must suffer with lifelong disabilities and mental illnesses, and whose sincere prayers seemingly go unanswered - and yet maintain their faith because they believe that God is God and, as Jesus prayed "Your will be done."

It's fair to say that many, many people of many faiths must struggle with burdens as you have shared.

You also wrote: "
The funny thing about Christians, they always turn events around to try and make you think that it was a good thing for you. I am laying in bed, tubes running out of every hole in my body (and they made a few more too) facing a life in a wheelchair at 18 and these Christians are telling me God loves me. How absurd. I tried to follow him and this was my reward. Of course they sad you cannot blame God, it was the devil. Interesting how God is powerless when the devil is around. Excuses, upon excuses. This is contrary to what I had been taught about being a Christian."

Far out! There's no way anyone has the right to turn this terrible situation into a "good thing". It is a tragedy, & that Christian friends of yours would lack empathy is terrible - and really, not biblical. Jesus reached out and LOVED to hang with (& even heal) the down and out. Is it your assessment that God should have prevented your accident (and, to be fair then, every tragic occurence throughout history)? I think it's wrong for your friends to have sat there and blamed the devil (because I can imagine that would have sounded like a copout), they should have just supported and loved and listened to you. False piety is rubbish I agree. Did you move from this straight to the idea that God isn't in control?

I'm not quite there in my pondering God, but I'd re-examine everything you've been told & see if it matches up with what the Bible actually says. This Pat Robertson doesn't know what he's talking about, Christ never claimed an easy life. Look at his own.

Re: It just hit me - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Hey Anonymous I know what you mean exactly.

For me, trusting Jesus means I have to sacrifice something I hold dear in my life, and so the fear of trusting in something which (I'm not sure can ever be tangibly proved) is deceptive is real and overwhelming.

1) I reckon pray. Many people here reckon this is useless, but if God is God then its worth a shot.

2) Look at the world. Look at people you love. Design or random? (Romans 1)

3) Ask people's opinions on both sides.

4) Don't be afraid to read the Bible for yourself and/or go to church. Even if God ISN'T real, you may as well check it out. Assess the claims according to how you "objectively" see the world as a human being.

5) Research other religions, philosophies, look at the testimonials on this site. This will likely cause you to question Christianity, but your final assessment will be well-rounded & whatever you choose you cannot be accused of being forcefed "lies".

6) Assess the quality of the authorship of different religious and philosophical texts. On what basis can these peoples' claims stand? (Can we trust them as authority?)

It's scary to trust anything. If God (here assuming he exists) was to reveal himself in his glory though, wouldn't we all be puppets? Because who would reject a revealed God in all his glory? That said, Romans 1 says that through creation God is clearly shown.

Anyways. Do your research. But it sounds, you like me, are trying to decipher whether Christ is THE TRUTH, rather than being just another world philosophy/postmodern branch. So try to assess your research in comparison to Jesus' claims.

All the best with your search!!

Re: If I'm not a Christian, what am I? - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Anonymous said:
"Christianity is supposed to be a religion where people insist on following Jesus to the point of death, but in modern times, it is more of a philosophy."

I agree. Upon examination of Scripture, a Christian is someone who lives for Christ (as THE 'Way, Truth, Life'), and will be persecuted and ridiculed (eg. Paul).

For me, I just entered a same-sex relationship and this has caused me to question things. However, you like me, Stina, must work out whether you are rejecting a philosopy or whether you are rejecting truth.

If you determine that Christianity is indeed a philosophy, then really it is irrelevant whether you are a Christian or not. All Christians are wasting their time. If you determine that Christ was indeed God incarnate, lived a sinless life, died for the sins of mankind, and rose to life - then whether or not you are a Christian is determined by whether or not you are following him in your actions. And if Jesus is Lord, then how you respond to his actions (which the Bible says were for our salvation) is of great significance.

Cool site btw, so good to have topics of depth fleshed out.

Re: Heaven, Hell and My Bodhisattva Vow - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Hey Astreja, hey Mark,

I think you're both beautifully strong people, and I love that you're both passionate about what you say.

I've recently been contemplating faith, & these things have entered my head from my looking at Christianity:

What is hell?
If according to scripture hell is eternity without God then fair enough if people who don't want God get hell. Who knows what being without God is like, if God really is the Creator.

Is it fair?
If according to scripture God is the source of love, and we can love because we are in his image, then if we reject the source, then perhaps eternity without love is just.

Hmm. I'd like to hear people's thoughts.

Re: Heaven, Hell and My Bodhisattva Vow - Testimonies of Ex-Christians

Firstly, Anonymous reveal yourself.
Secondly, do genuine questions contemplating the possibility of the Bible's realness warrant no answer? And in the new testament he tries to change HIS spots, but fails. By the end of Revelations he is confining every human being who fails to accept the correct version of the approved religion into everlasting and horrific torment. Your god is wicked."

From what I've read of the Old Testament, God was there with his people and his acts, words & presence were clear. If this is accurate, his response to people's rejection of him would not be petty, his anger warranted & his 'murder' - that's interesting. Where God 'murdered' anyone who acknowledged him as God I cannot find.

I share though your thoughts that today it is obviously a lot harder to clearly see a deity. Especially with such a rich array of religions and worldviews.

Sometimes I look at nature and have a deep sense of God.

I suppose a spin-off question for me is, how do people who identify as ex-christians look at nature, especially if they once shared this awe of 'creation'?

Re: 300 million year old rock - ExChristian.Net - Articles

How to identify a "True Christian" by their fruits!

You get up Sunday morning and take a bath and put on your best clothes and pretty shoes and go to church.

Then you walk into church with a big selfrighteous grin and tell everyone how wonderful they are and how lucky they are to be in church with you.

Then you all pretend that you are worshipping an invisible deity and then you pray to this invisible deity and you get all puffed up over yourself for being in this man-built church.

Then you pretend to sing songs to this invisible deity.

These are the "True Christians", the one's that are pretending along with you that day.

Then the "True Christian" will never miss a Sunday or a prayer meeting, nor will they ever sway nor read anything opposing their beliefs, because they have found the one "True Belief".

The "True Christian" believes their Bible holds all truth and wisdom obtainable in one's lifetime.

The "True Christian" believes that there is no greator truth and wisdom and knowledge available anywhere in the world today, except from a book written by men, over two thousand years ago.

The "True Christian" knows that he is now superior than people that do not believe as he believes.

The "True Christian" feels selfrighteously superior than non-christians, because his bible says he is.

The "True Christian" is all about what he can obtain for himself, he's got a belief, a belief in a book, a book written by people on halucingenic drugs.

Re: Hello angry Christians! - ExChristian.Net - Articles

Clytemnestra said: "Do try to remember, my precious, that a christian believes that I am going to hell because I don't love his little jesus. I cannot imagine that degree of hate."

Do you really believe that a God of love actually is happy to see any of His creatures turning away from Him? Do you actually believe that it's God's hate that is causing the obstinate sinner to be seperated eternally? No, never! God loves everyone of His creatures and His heart is pounding in pain at the site of so many that reject His love.

Clytemnestra, the hate is coming from all of us that reject Him by choosing hate over love, choosing resentment over forgiveness, choosing condescension over respect, etc...

Clytemnestra said: "And I hate to disappoint any christian who might be listening, but we didn't use drugs or sleep around or shoplift or worship Satan."

Is this your standard of morality? Do you really believe that you're a truly moral person? I tell you, none of us are, Christians and non-Christians. The difference between you and I, is that I recognize and acknowledge my sinful nature. This is what God is waiting for from all of His special creation, humans. Admit that we purposely ignore the moral absolutes He's placed on each of our hearts and from that humble act, He'll begin the healing process.

You may have chosen a clean lifestyle but I do suggest you take a step down from that horse
you're riding. I've lived most of my life on that high horse and I can tell you honestly that there is only One hand that you can take that will successfully bring you to the ground. That hand belongs to Jesus....who is God.

May God's Grace touch your heart. I tell you solemnly that unless He does, no man can ever have true peace and joy.

All believers should hope and PRAY that He wakes everyone from their sleep. If righteousness, true righteousness as defined by Jesus and imprinted on your heart doesn't interest you, then He's not your master. Why would you want to spend eternity with your master, ie. your creator, if His ways don't appeal to you?

For this reason and because He loves you too much to ever completely destroy you, He'll let people stay seperated from Him as they are choosing.

The down side of this choice comes when people (ie. souls) realize that the only reason they can love today is because of Him. Seperated from Him, we'll no longer even have the ability to love, hence the "wailing and gnashing of teeth".

Everyone has been made to love Him and be with Him eternally, everyone. It all comes down to your free will, do you agree with His judgement on you or do you actually think that the moral laws you formed for yourself are better than His?

God Bless,
Luke

Re: Hello angry Christians! - ExChristian.Net - Articles

God would never force you to love Him, He's just hoping that when you learn about Him through His revelation (ie. Jesus), you'll agree and turn to Him.

If my child doesn't want to come home because I don't allow pornography on our TV, does that mean that I don't love him? Just because I do know that it's better for him to be home with his family at this stage of his life, should I just disrespect my son by forcing him to stay home?

No, of course not. Despite the pain it would cause us not to have our son with us, we simply cannot allow him to stay with us if he's going to continue viewing that porno.

My love would never stop and my pain would only grow as I'd observe him becoming more and more distant from us, his family.

This is, I hope, a descent analogy to the way God may feel about everyone that wants nothing to do with Him.

So when someone spends their entire life saying no to the family rules, what do you think might happen at this death? At this moment his mind is shown with perfect clarity by God's light just how much he hurt his family by choosing his addictions over Love (impurity, pride, hate, etc..). This light, this sudden realization of the choices he made may not cause God to condemn the son. The son will see his life, finally, in His father's light and may very well condemn himself. The son's choice, his final choice…as defined by his life’s choices, is not reversible in this state of his existence.

Our Father, everyone, is suffering to see us all rejecting His love.

Why won't you become lovers of righteousness...lovers of God?!

If something inside of you does draw you in to be truly good (even behind closed doors), then you have what it takes to fall in love with Jesus. If you're trying to do this on your own, you've probably noticed that you always fall short. Don't worry about falling short, we all do. God is hoping that you'll come to him just as you are, now, this minute!

He's so close to you, he can hear your heart beating, your breath and your every thought and emotion. Nothing is hidden from Him and there is nothing that He can't heal if you ask for help.

May God bless you,
Luke

Re: Shopping with the enemy…

trying ur luck wid women and shopping ...will ahve to end taht way :))ciao

Re: Leave of absence…

well raed ur article on southies ..from ur old blog site ..was a gud one ...i hope im not making any mistake

Re: Lancers and Mateus - Representing a Nation of Wine

i have a bottle of mateus it's old maybe 50's 60's how can i fine how old it is? and is it worth $$

Re: Lolla Main Event: Kanye West (8/3)

how about that one idiot obama sighting. yeah i told that to gullible fucking losers like him so i could get some breathing space at NIN

Re: http://consequenceofsound.net/2008/08/28/album-review-intimacy/

Check your article for grammar, "too" not "to". You lost all credibility as a reviewer when you mentioned the free download nonsense. it is clear you are looking for an easy band to put down and you do it on the merit on their new single Mercury clearly. one day you find, ten years has got behind you, no one told you when to run." It's amazing how fast the years go by. Seems like just yesterday that I was sneaking through the sidehatch. Coming from someone on the 8-year plan (and 5th college), I'm still trying to figure out what purpose college has for me. I've changed aspiring career paths numerous times, including sports journalist, cop, english teacher, real estate agent, and back to journalist. What have I learned in those 8 years? Nothing that I readily retain, except that my school ID made a good razor and my textbooks a bigger mirror. Ironically, I found my career outside of school, in a field I last expected: paramedicine. I'm eager to finish up paramedic school and move back to Miami, join a department as a medic/firefighter, work at least 20 years, and ride into the sunset before 50. He is an amazing fighter and so well rounded and really I cannot see anyone better then him at the moment (I am in good company with people like GSP and Couture in agreement).

As for being "bitch slapped around the ring by Andre Arlovsk" I just went back and watched the video - he did look unsettled in his ring position but I did not see any major blows landed, until of course Arlovsk got well and truly bitch smacked and put down lick sack of potatoes.

And for getting rocked - that was Kazuyuki Fujita and really that showed some amazing chin considering he then switched the fight and tapped him out with Rear Naked Choke submission.

Also Randleman Suplexed Emelianenko and looked like he had broke his neck, but he recovered and tapped him out in a Kimura. So thats thing with this guy, his stand up is fast and strong, his ground work incredible and he has a chin and amazing heart to come back.

So yeah considering what you say I still stand by my belief he is the best. As for the UFC I think the person to really challenge him will be Cheick Kongo as opposed to their current champion with an Amazing 2 wins 1 loss record.

Re: Josh Barnett PLEASE KO Fedor Emelianenko

Some good points John and to sing from the same book this fight really will be the proofer Fedor need's (outside of the UFC). I have to agree Tim Sylvia was no real competition in fact he looked way out of shape and quite porky and Arlovski showed bad judgment and composure.

Hey,do kick another post after the fight! I have started following you on twitter so will keep an eye out.

So what do reckon to Mir and Lesnar and more importantly the winner of Cain Velasquez vs Cheick Kongo taking on Lesnar or Mir?

Me I would love to see Cheick kicking tens tons of gas out of Brock Lenar...whenever I see Brock I expect him to pull out a broad sword and shout "By the power of greyskull!"

Re: Just a reminder

Hello. What Ethanol Boom?

The farm land is already there. Just that farmers are growing corn instead of other things. Ethanol is by no means the miracle fuel, but it is one part of the large picture. There isn't going to be one single product that will replace oil, it will take everything. Ethanol, electric, hydrogen, bio-diesel, solar, wind, nuclear, ect. Plus corn is a bad crop to grow anyways for ethanol. Switch grass can grow anywhere in the US, and it provides almost 3 times the ethanol yielding rate that corn does.

Sure you pollute to get the corn to turn into fuel from the tracker and the refineries, but that pollution is still going to be there whether they grow corn or wheat. Ethanol refineries are also more eco friendly then oil refineries as they can be much smaller to produce the same amount of fuel and require less energy to produce the required fuels.

Seems to not have gone bust. Just that it didn't take off like it everyone made it out to do, just like all the other alternatives. Ethanol will still stay around, produce more fuel and grow into something much bigger, at least in the midwest states. Kansas is supposed to be able to claim energy dependence by 2015 or something like that because of ethanol.

Re: Video Smackdown: NukeFree.org vs. Nuclear Energy Institute

Our musician friends tell us that nuclear waste will remain "deadly" for 280,000 years. Assuming that to be ten half-lives, I'm very interested to hear what specific radioisotope or radioisotopes they had in mind with a half-life of 28,000 years, and what their yields in used nuclear fuel are.

Nuclear power plants do not produce weapons grade plutonium, and even if the plutonium produced in used fuel could be weaponisable at all, it cannot at all be weaponisable if it is not seperated via PUREX extraction, and it is this which is the critical step in weapons proliferation. This seperation of a pure plutonium stream is not required for the efficient reprocessing and recycling of used nuclear fuel.

Re: E-Paper Surpasses Dead Trees In Life-Cycle Test

I'd like to see a GPS or a cell phone using the ePaper display technology to replace the LCD screen. The ePaper display only uses power when the image on the display is being updated, and it's also marvelously adaptable to different lighting conditions. So, you don't have to blast an LCD-style backlight to make the screen brigter than, say, sunlight.

The big stumbling block seems to be the update speed. My girlfriend has an eBook reader, and it takes a couple of seconds to change pages. Menu-navigation using a cursor doesn't work so well -- Sony included a button for each menu selection (kind of like an ATM machine) that make the device very usable, but the ePaper display is not yet a general-purpose display.

The other problem with the Sony eBook reader is that it's mostly intended for DRM's books purchased through Sony's Windows-only interface program. Those of us who want to use the tool for our jobs can put PDFs onto an SD card, but the dimensions of the screen make tricky to read PDFs intended for 8.5"x11" sheets of paper. Project Guttenburg provides classics that can be loaded this way, as well. But the device is still a little clumsy in this respect. If they release an 8.5"x11" version of the eBook reader, it'll be a big hit among academics, since research papers and student theses/dissertations are often intended for US Letter and/or A4 paper. That could easily save 50k pages of paper per year per medium-sized academic department.

But, if the ePaper display can update fast enough to replace B&W LCD displays on embedded devices, those of us who value utility over flash-bang-glitz will be very happy to own GPSs, cell phones, and other portable electronics that use this display technologies.

Re: Taking Back the Streets: International Pillow Fight Day

This is one of the few videos that has ever had my cat riveted to the screen! The answer may surprise you because the answer is ZERO. Why zero?

This is only true if the house has direct electric resistance heating. My house has a heat-pump, so it costs maybe 20% as much electricity to provide the same amount of heat as a resistance heater (like a light-bulb or an electric baseboard heater).

Also, in the summer, the air conditioner doesn't have to remove as much heat from the house when I run CFLs. The heating effect of incandescent light-bulbs is quite noticeable; the heat-pump air conditioning system went out in my girlfriend's apartment last summer, and we made the temperatures bearable by switching her incandescent bulbs to CFLs. (Plus, it gave us something to do.)

So, sorry, your blanket statement is wrong. In houses that only feature electric resistance heat, you're right -- but you're just plain wrong wrong for houses that have heat-pumps, oil-heat, wood-heat, district-steam heating, solar hot-water hydronic heating, or any other kind of heating system.

Re: TH Forum Highlights: LED And CFL's Not Energy Efficient, Solutions for Vampires, Volunteers Wanted

What Luke says is true, the effect in the summer of reducing the cooling load easily makes up for the loss from heating in the winter,

That's not quite what I said. I said that in my house, CFLs are more efficient in both the summer and in the winter because my house is heated/cooled by a heat-pump.

For instance, if I run a 100W light builb all day (12 hours), it will use 100W*12hrs = 1.2 KWh and deliver about 1.2 KWh *3412 BTU/KWh - 4095 BTU of heat into the house. The author is correct that this calculation is exactly the same for an electric baseboard heater -- and for all I know, that may be the heating system that he has in his house.

However, for my house, if I deliver that same amount of heat to my house through my heat-pump, I use many times less energy to do so. (I said 20% above, which wasn't quite right -- 33% is closer, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pump#Efficiency -- but it depends a great deal on the ambient temperature.) So, with my heat-pump, I use about 0.4 KWh to deliver that same 4095 BTU! But, now I need a light -- let's assume (incorrectly) that my CFL produces no heat. A typical 100 watt-equivelent CFL uses about 23 watts of electricity, so the bulb uses about 0.3 KWh. So, now, my heat-pump + CFL system is using 0.7KWh instead of 1.2KWh -- so it's nearly twice as efficient. In real life the heat-pump + CFL system would be a great deal more efficient, since I can't heat my house with just the 100W light bulbs!

Oh, as your for 90% loss from electricity, I must disagree. Those steam turbines are pretty efficient; they're pretty darned close to that 60% thermodynamic limit, and the transmission losses are more like 10%-15%, so the real-life efficiency of heating with electricity is close to 50%. My university uses the waste-heat from their power-plant to power a steam district-heating system (known as combined heating and power), so the numbers are much better in the winter.

Re: From the Forums: Buy a New Car or Keep Old One?

The average driver drives about 12,000 miles a year. I drive a great deal more than that (currently about 45,000 miles per year). You drive a little less.

If you don't drive much, I don't think it matters much what you drive -- just so long as you keep the vehicle in good repair. If it burns oil, junk it immediately. Replace the catalytic converter, if necessary. Keep the exhaust system in good repair. Take care of those nagging check-engine lights (the oxygen sensor and the EGR are there for a reason). Use good tires, properly inflated. Use the vehicle only when its capabilities apply to a particular situation. If you do all of those things, then keeping an old car makes a lot of environmental sense to me.

As for me, I'm driving hundreds and hundreds of miles per week. What I drive matters a lot, from both the environmental and financial perspectives. My Jetta TDI is pretty good from the carbon-footprint side of things but, due to the frequency of repairs, it's lousy from the financial side. The Jetta can run off of processed veggie oil, so it has an

My girlfriend's Prius is a wonderful car from both the financial and environmental perspectives -- but it lacks any sort of alternative-fuel capability (the hybrid system does an amazing job maximizing the benefit you get from burning gasoline, but all of the energy still comes from gasoline).

Another thing to consider is that the next generation of cars coming out in the 2010-2011 timeframe will have a lot of environmentally friendly features. There should be a number of new small/clean/high-mileage diesels and hybrids on the market. There's a lot of hype about the Chevy Volt (a plug-in serial-hybrid that can go 40 miles on battery power and then an additional 300 miles on gasoline) -- if the hype condenses and GM sells the real car, then it would be worth the wait. If GM doesn't deliver, Toyota probably will deliver a plug-in Prius about the same time.

If you're interested in this stuff day-to-day, I can recommend a few blogs:

http://www.autobloggreen.com<br />
http://www.greencarcongress.com<br />
http://www.gm-volt.com</p>

Re: Mapping the Alternative Energy Potential of the United States

Why does the wind stop here at the Ilinois border?

Having just moved here, I can understand that the local politics could probably produce enough hot air to account for the discrepancy, but the data still looks funny....

Re: Largest Wind Farm in Kansas (250 MW) Built by Italian Energy Firm

We need an american company to start making these wind farms all over so we can save energy and stop using coal.

Re: Eat A Camel, Save Australia’s Environment

In response to RM: Have you actually seen the size of the area that this is talking about? It is huge, not to mention that Australia’s population density is only 6.7 per sq mile, compared to the USA which is 80 people per sq mile. Although in other parts of the world things like urban sprawl are pushing animals out, there are no "cities" as you know them that far north. To get a better picture, Western Australia is more than three and a half times bigger than Texas, and only has 2.1 million people, 85% of whom live in the south west corner of the state. Unfortunately the only way to manage these populations, because of the area they are spread over, is to cull them by using aerial marksmen. Birth control methods are in-efficient because of the effort in subduing a herd for long enough to administer the birth control. Even if birth control methods were used, the camels that are still wandering the desert are using valuable pasture lands which are normally grazed by sheep and cattle, which results in even lower profits for the farmers. That would not be a bad thing if they were making a truck load of money each year, but because of the current drought, no one is going to tell them they have to suffer further cuts to their income.

Re: 2008 U.S. Gas Price Year in Review

One more,

Dec 8, 2008 - Was looking for GasBuddy.com and end up running across Petrofix. To be honest, 90% of the things you wrote are found on the product brochures found all over the net. The D80 is not as bad as you have described above ISO 400, but then your expecatation may be higher.

"D300 has better protection against dust?" That has yet to be seen. Sure it has more seals in the body, but at the lens mount, it's as vulnerable as all other Nikon cameras. Also, the dust shaker in the D300 is not perfect, dirt will still stay inside the mirror box, and the sensoer will still get dust particles. One still needs to clean the sensor, but not as often. By the way, cleaning a sensor requires great care, but you're scaring people by calling it a surgical procedure. After about 3 times, it's as easy as cleaning one's ear with a q-tip. Seriously. Sensor dust is here to stay, every DSLR owner needs to learn to tackle it.

"... being able to focus on its face without having to readjust the shutter is simply awesome." You probably know this already, but the D80 can do the same (and so can the D50 & D40), Continuos Focus mode.

"...you can use an expensive pro battery and get up to 8 frames per second using the MB-D10 on D300." I wouldn't consider AA batteries expensive pro batteries. They still give you 8fps.

"...D300 is a huge upgrade from D80." It'd better be. It costs twice as much. It's a two-step upgrade. A fairer comparison is to the D200.

Thanks again for a good post of your personal opinions. I own both, and the D80 is still a wonderful camera.

Re: http://www.reyjr.com/2009/08/to-where-you-are-by-josh-groban.html

Talaga naman! I'm a retired teacher who has spent over 33 years in the classroom, primarily with 6th-8th grade students.

I am a member of ICE, Illinois Computing Educators, and have served on the planning committee for IL-TCE, the Illinois Technology Conference for Educators, for the last 7 years, coordinating tech staff volunteers for the conference and working with Web 2.0 resources for the conference.

I have been a conference presenter at IL-TCE ten times and have also presented at the MECC conference in Minneapolis, IETC in Springfield. TETC in Nashville, METC in St. Louis, and the Mt. Vernon Conference.

I received my B.A. from North Park University in Chicago and M.Ed. from National Louis University in Evanston, Illinois.

People sometimes ask me now, how it feels to be retired. My usual comment is that it's nice to work because you want to, not because you have to. I keep myself busy with substitute teaching, managing my website of resources for teachers and doing those odd jobs around the house that I didn't have time for before I retired.

In my "spare" time I enjoy golf, the outdoors, reading, digital photography and, of course, fiddling around with stuff on the computer.

I estimate that in my 33 years of teaching I have had over 6,000 students pass through my classrooms. I hope that some of them can find their way to this blog and perhaps use it as an opportunity to keep in touch.

The intro to my blog sort of sums it up...Being the blog of a retired teacher with just too much time on his hands, hence, Retired Old Fart's Links, Musings & Observations. (Also, because I'm retired and you're not!)

The focus is on technology, primarily applications and utilities the average teacher might find useful, interesting or just plain fun.
R.O.F.L.M.A.O.

Re: John Callaway

John was the best - he will be greatly missed...

Re: *** UPDATED *** Hang in there, Carlos!

Carlos is awesome. Hand checking, for example, is no longer allowed... but in MJ's time was the status quo. There are a host of videos that I've watched on Youtube where they'll show how much screening, checking, and other physical contact they had in MJ's time. I'm certainly no expert, but just from watching the videos, Kobe and King James have it much easier to put up the offensive numbers.

I also happen to be from IL and grew up idolizing Jordan, so I may be just a bit bias. :)

Re: http://mikalatos.blogspot.com/2009/07/baby-m-comes-to-stay.html

Congratulations guys.
