I do not think there is any reason companies should "worry" about someone getting too popular, especially if they are treating that person well.

Smart people are not necessarily motivated by 'more money' - perhaps by more freedom. You would probably have lost that person regardless if you try and tell them what they can and can't do.

Also I'm at a PR agency, and having a personal brand is vital for my success, especially when I spearhead a social media marketing campaign. PR people moving forward that have strong personal brands are the ones with the most connections and the ones who will be most valuable.

If you can successfully market/promote yourself, you will be able to for a brand as well. This is definitely worth some more discussion, I might put my thoughts together for a post on this too.

Re: Imagine how Portable Social Graphs Will Impact the Web

@jeremiah - ahh, that either wasn't clear (or i'm not reading well enough)

will be interesting to see how this stuff plays out in the real world...

Re: Imagine how Portable Social Graphs Will Impact the Web

The Amazon example isn't a good one. Amazon already has a huge amount of data on frequent shoppers to the site.

What I put into Facebook doesn't give Amazon anything more useful than they already have on me.

I don't see this as anything revolutionary or "game changing" as the presentation implies. Although they could use data to suggest things, I don't see why this is so amazing.

Also, is Facebook trying to monetize merely by becoming the world's largest affiliate? That seems like a weak model for what they potentially could do.

We'll see how this stuff plays out in the wild of course, but if I'm an e-commerce site SEO, blog referrals and the like still seems like the best option. People don't go on Facebook to shop (or click ads). We've proven this time and time again.

http://www.centernetworks.com/facebook-ad-campa...

Re: Retweet: The Infectious Power Of Word Of Mouth

You wrote:

"In some ways, long form blog posts like this seem so much slower and plodding compared to how quickly information can come and go in Twitter."

The difference is you are not spreading news here, you are spreading strategy. The thing is though, you can't really sell a "service" on this, personal branding is all about how good you are

a) at marketing yourself

b) at your profession

If you're dedicated enough, you can take the extra step everyone forgets and showcase your work digitally. It really is as simple as that, if you're work is great it will stand out. Sure marketing yourself helps, but after a certain amount of time the talented people start to shine.

Especially in our industry, there's no excuse not to market yourself. It can be a bullet point list or an essay, it can be long or short. You can incorporate social proofing elements if you want. It can be as simple as an "about" page on a blog or more of a formal layout. There's no wrong answer here - ultimately I think the bio is just the first step - something more interesting is someone's stream - what they find interesting, what they write, what they share, etc.

Re: Social Media Case Study: Dairy Queen

Great case study Mike, you nailed this. Leave the rules aside and let creativity reign! Good points all around, I think both strategies could work out for sure - I personally enjoy clever headlines though and don't necessarily agree with forcing them into a box. Techdirt is one site for example that frequently writes headlines way too long for Twitter, but look at their popularity. I still think if you persevere content is king...optimizing for SEO helps but optimizing for social media is being compelling.

Re: How to Stay Near the Cutting Edge

Swap out playing video games for chess, if you really want to keep your mind sharp.

Re: Note to Social Media Types- Build Your Interfaces

"In principal, what you say is spot on. I'm not sure it does to the everyday consumer either. Just like anything else, it becomes background noise, a part of the landscape that is ignored. Many marketers only know how to be louder, not necessarily more effective. It will continue as long as big brands exist and the management still is living in the era of "average products for average people" as Seth Godin puts it. Although there still needs to be those products, you're right - at what point do people stop turning up the volume and start carefully thinking? They simply "are". Is the iPod bad for radio? Radio was terrible as it was and people who enjoyed listening to music never listened to the radio anyway. Radio could have innovated and played DECENT music and had GOOD programming, better than the iPod - but they didn't. Thus they failed and now everyone is their own DJ.

Mediums that don't change or evolve doom themselves. The internet was here quite awhile ago. The TV and film people sat in their ivory towers and didn't bother to think things could change. Meanwhile the world went right along without them.

YouTube could be the best thing to happen to film and TV if they embrace it. It is all so much free PR and promotional content for them. There is some great thinking about this over at Techdirt if you want to read more. I think this has less to do with the recession (some companies are actually doing okay) and more to do with the fact that companies are seeing this is as a vital prong in the media landscape. And, as I wrote today - we don't really need "social media experts" - we need good marketers. All marketers should understand social media by now. I have been asked countless times by companies if I would post something up for some cash. Izea merely has packaged this idea and made it public, good on them.

It all depends what kind of blog you have. If you run a professional blog and you are not blogging for dollars, you would never use something like this. If you're running a "cat blog" as Seth Godin names it, or merely blogging for dollars via AdSense, then this is a great offering.

Good PR remains vital, campaigns like this will never get you "digital ink" on Technorati Top 100 blogs, for example.

This is the online equivalent of advertorials, and should be treated as such...its paying for placement. Readers don't take such posts as seriously as they do posts that were written purely as editorial content. They also may jeopardize a blogs reputation. It all depends on WHY you blog whether this is attractive to you. I think it is fine and up to the blogger to decide, I don't see why people get so bent out of shape.

If you don't like it, don't read their site - simple.

Re: How Companies Respond to the Risks of Personal Brands

@Dan - I don't think there will be any difference between the amount of people building a personal brand today and when millennials are in the workforce.

Everyone keeps talking about how the next generation is made up of "digital natives" yet these kids are (on the whole) still at the same level of motivation as any generation - only a small percentage actually care enough to do something like build a personal brand.

Being 25 I have witnessed my own generation enter the workforce, and most are pretty lazy.

I disagree with everyone saying that millennials will change anything, age has nothing to do with it. Exceptional people change things, not demographic groups.

They may force corporations to let them use Facebook/the hot social network of the day because they are used to it (it's like the phone to them) but from my experience only a small % of people actually want to build a reputation for themselves using it.

Re: 75% of Facebook Users Reject New Design; Facebook Forces it on them Anyway!

hey andy that's what i get for backing you up? ;) hehe

Adam Singer's last blog post..How To Choose An Online Marketing Or PR Agency

Re: 75% of Facebook Users Reject New Design; Facebook Forces it on them Anyway!

Alot of math for one day...back to writing !

Adam Singer's last blog post..How To Choose An Online Marketing Or PR Agency

Re: 75% of Facebook Users Reject New Design; Facebook Forces it on them Anyway!

Seriously the new design is FAR better, you people complaining need to give it a chance.

Adam Singer's last blog post..How To Choose An Online Marketing Or PR Agency

Re: Eric Friedman From Marketing.FM

Test response...damn I like disqus a lot!

Re: Eric Friedman From Marketing.FM

Test Facebook

Re: How I Got 2000+ StumbleUpon Visitors Using My 10 Step Strategy

Careful with purely focusing on SU/Digg traffic. Any tips for getting people to realize the power of putting content into a blog format? I get *so much* pushback from that, I started calling it a publishing platform and they listen a little more.

The problem is so many people still think 'blog' is something a 14 year old publishes to MySpace. Then you show them links to legit sites that are great resources published intelligently with huge audiences and they STILL don't get it.

Maybe you just can't convince some people...I really don't like trying to 'force' some people to adopt things when you put in all the work, get results and they still don't understand it. It's unreal.

Re: BIGLIST SEO Blog Reviews 090508

All TopRank readers should check out Being Peter King. Apparently they have learned nothing from watching the public teardown of any remaining relevance of the RIAA and the music industry and their attempts to lockup their content.

What they both have in common is they are trying to bend the web to their whim, as if they are so important special rules should be made to accommodate them. That approach is fundamentally flawed from step one. We should not be making any special rules to accommodate organizations designed for a previous era. This is the antithesis of progress and creating systems that work at scale.

Economic growth is not had from bailing out or making special accommodations for the gatekeepers of yesterday, but in investing in innovative new players who create products that are relevant, interesting and useful to a modern world.

Restricting networks that are by design open is two steps backwards and harms everyone at the benefit of the few. Mitch Joel points us to a talk between Thomas Curley (President and Chief Executive Officer of the Associated Press) along with Arianna Huffington (from The Huffington Post). It's at: http://www.twistimage.com/blog/archives/trying-.... Go watch it if you have a minute. What I got out of it? The AP wants to reinstate their position as king in a world they have been dethroned. It appears to me they want to try and do this through a form of "news DRM"

The core problem with DRM, content restriction, lawsuits, paralleling pre-Internet models, and a "head in the sand" approach is that they ignore the bigger opportunity: building something to take advantage of open networks.

Re: http://blog.louisgray.com/2009/04/i-wish-ad-companies-would-truly.html

Yes, and yes.
