Heh, "Old Style" phones are powered from the phone lines. Try putting the two cables on your tongue and getting someone to ring the number :), but they will (eventually) run out of power as well, as do mobile phone masts.

We had a massive row with an Operator in a previous project, where they refused to call what we were doing (VoIP) a phone service, as it wouldn't work when the power failed.
