Hi Louis,

We are at an early stage in the market. Many companies will try innovations, get traction, & raise capital. What is interesting is that these early entrants are at a huge disadvantage. They often run out of money and energy just as new entrants flood-in to capitalize on early mistakes, add some innovations, and rush in with fresh cash and new energy.

This cycle will end as these services mature and reach scale. As the services transition from a single feature into a product, support administration, security, and reporting adoption will accelerate. This will create a gap that will be difficult for new entrants to close and will ward-off seed investors. The result is a "shutting down the gate" --- until there is another major shift in the market -- and the process will start all over again.

Great post!

We at JS-Kit believe that the blogger should *always* have their comments stored locally. This give the blogger the flexibility to switch comment services at anytime without the hassles of re-importing. A nice by-product is that if the comment service goes down the blogger merely needs to turn the widget off and everything works as normal.

For most blogs JS-Kit services are free and contain no advertising. For commercial sites that use our widgets we place advertising within the service and share the revenue 50/50 or charge a nominal ASP fee to remove the ads.

JS-Kit is not a destination site all traffic & SEO point to the blog.

Yes, your idea is wacky, on two fronts:

1) There are 10's of millions of blogs and WordPress is one of many very large platforms [TypePad, Blogger, Ning, etc]. So it *is* wacky to suggest that one platform can aggregate content spread across all CMS platforms.

2) Disqus has some 10,000 blogs which represents .0001 percent of the market ... a unifying platform? wacky....

I am with JS-Kit, and we provide Comments, Ratings, and Polls for blogs and have over 65,000 sites. We are 6X as big and are not so naive as to suggest that we could consolidate 100M+ blogs.

Think open standards and cross platform data exchange -- not wacky.

2) The client code is open source so you can host it if you want. Most don't because you miss out on our constant improvements.
