Hmmm... you know how many millions of users that would kick off? As much as we'd all like to think that everyone should be tech savvy like us, they aren't. They don't have the time and/or desire to be. They aren't into computers and the Internet that much, so when they do use it, they want something really easy.
Think I'm exaggerating? i can't even begin to tell you how many different tweets I've seen that say "I forgot to use the @ on that last tweet. Sorry."

i'm not sure twitter has that many "millions" of users. anyone "not" into tech probably isn't on twitter to begin with unless they're a marketer... and you can tell those types by their retarded ratios. If i wanted to write "is" status for everything i'd update on facebook.

I didn't say that you said I couldn't enjoy it. All I was saying is that there are those of us that do.
Secondly, I shouldn't have to "sell" Twitter or Plurk or any other service to my friends. They should be able to go to the site and figure it out on their own.
As for Twhirl, I've preached about it until I'm blue in the face. Most of my friends though won't download it for some reason. Maybe they are nervous about first having to download Adobe AIR before Twhirl. I honestly don't know what their hold-up is, but according to an article I saw on ReadWriteWeb last month, Twhirl accounts for less that 7% of the "tweets" on Twitter. The overwhelming majority of Twitter users still use the web site for whatever reason.
People process information differently. Some people don't like the command-type structure of Twitter. Others don't like the AJAX-visual style of Plurk. Fine. To each their own. They should use whatever they like best.
As for "Twitter's many outages have cause users to seek alternatives...while Twitter is down", again I disagree. I use Twitter, but I've been so sick of its unreliability, I've been seeking out a permanent alternative even when Twitter is online. I've heard a lot of people voice similar sentiments. They may not end up at Plurk, but they are looking for something else.

I don't see how saying there are people who enjoy the service was necessary. I never said there weren't and I supported those who did. I never said enjoying Plurk was bad, either. By saying that, you are attributing an argument to me that I have not made.
Yes, you should have to sell websites. When you tell someone, "Hey I found this awesome site called Myspace. You should check it out." and they ask what the hell Myspace is and you tell them, you're selling the site. When you help them fill out their bio and learn what the different menu options are, you're selling the site.
Again, you keep attributing an argument to me that I have never made. I have said multiple times that Plurk will retain its own core userbase, but it will fall out of vogue with most of micro-bloggers out there.

see... plurks ui is far more complicated than twitters. it took me like 10 minutes to figure out how to follow someone. so i wouldn't boast how easy it is. just saying.

I don't entirely agree. I have a lot of friends who I have tried to get to join Twitter who simply didn't get it. They didn't understand the different syntax's like @reply and direct messages. They gave up on it.
Plurk on the other hard is point and click. I've already had some friends join me on Plurk that wouldn't on Twitter. Why? The visual metaphor was easier for them to follow.
Keep in mind that Plurk has just barely launched. I'm seeing changes and improvements to it on a daily basis. Once they release an API (or possibly even before that), third party development will help Plurk catch on the same way Twitter has.
Twitter was there first and deserves credit for that, but Twitter has almost de-evolved recently. When is the last time you saw a new feature being added to Twitter? Don't tell me they don't need any. There's lots of areas for improvement (aside from their outages).
Will Plurk be the answer? I think that all depends on whether it's adopted into third party apps such as Twhirl, etc. People seem to love or hate the Plurk interface, so Plurk needs to offer people an alternative to it via outside developer apps.
I think people are being especially hard on Plurk because well, they feel that their beloved Twitter could be threatened. No Twitter user wants to see the community they've established disappear. Twitter's many outages have left people looking for an alternative though. For awhile people were flocking to friendfeed, and it came under the same harsh criticism as Plurk is now. I doubt Twitter is going to fall second to Plurk anytime soon, but you have to admit that Twitter is shooting themselves in the foot.
All I can suggest is that if Plurk is not for you, fine- so be it. There's no reason the rest of us shouldn't enjoy it though.

hmm. I'm not sure where I said that Plurkers shouldn't enjoy their service. In fact, I'm pretty sure I said that there will be a diehard core group of Plurkers who remain with the service after it falls out of vogue. I was merely reviewing a service and comparing it to another similar service.
Twitter's many outages have cause users to seek alternatives...while Twitter is down. They come back to Twitter. I don't feel threatened by Plurk. I don't think it is a viable Twitter rival. I love FriendFeed and use it just as frequently as I used Twitter.
I'm not sure what is so difficult to pick up on with the Twitter syntax. There's two different commands. @reply and D direct message. If your friends had twhirl, it would all be point and click then. I think you failed to really sell the service to your friends rather than the service failed them.

But I do thank you for actually reading the article, rather than the other Plurkers who seem to have just seen that it says Plurk on it and said YAY! Then closed the window.

in Disqus: Now with 100% more video on DISQUS Blog
Perhaps I didn't word my question correctly:
I don't want to remove inappropriate video comments after the fact. I
might not see them for several hours after they get posted.
Can I have video comments require approval (moderation) by me, but
regular comments (non-video) not require moderation?

How does content control work on this? That is, what if someone records an inappropriate video comment? Are all video comments moderated before going live (even for registered users)?
I like the idea, but I have concerns about the execution of it.

I'm assuming you mean the ability to import the current comments on your WordPress blog into Disqus.
I was just about going to write a post myself asking if there are any updates or a planned release of this feature, but you beat me to it.
Daniel, anyone? Any updates?

Yes, but does it work for those commenters who don't register with Disqus?
For example, WordPress 2.5 will match the Gravatar as long as the person enters their e-mail that matches a Gravatar registration. I have a feeling that many of the commenters on my site won't register with Disqus... at least not initially. Will their Gravatar show up by merely putting in their e-mail address when leaving a comment?
Also, has the option to allow blog owners the ability to require an e-mail address for someone to leave a comment been implemented yet? I don't see the option, but I believe you said it was something you were working on.

Scott,
Yes, it works for all commenters, whether or not they are registered
with Disqus.
Also, it already is a requirement to leave an email address to leave a
comment.
I hope that helps!

in Apple - It Just Works? on A Random Seed
Oh god... have you tried Vista? Give me my Mac ANYDAY over the P.O.S. OS!
As much of a Mac devotee that I am, I'm willing to admit that Leopard was kind of buggy at first. Almost all of that was fixed (for me at least... knock on wood) when the 10.5.2 update came out.
I guess another reason I like my Mac is that when something does go wrong, it seems easier to fix. I don't know how many times I used to resort to doing a clean install of Windows XP to fix problems. Maybe it's because Apple controls both the hardware and OS.
Just my 2¢.

Yea, I must admit Mac is unstable at times, but it doesnt't "just break"
A lot of time everything is working fine on windows, and the next day you start it, it breaks and require a clean install.
As geeks, we should be glad that at least we can fix these things and with Mac, we got lesser things to fix. But just lesser =)

That doesn't work if the post has no comments on it yet. They don't show up on the dashboard. I don't want to have to go through and find all my "comments closed" posts and put a comment on them just to be able to turn comments off through Disqus.

in New commenting feature: Edit comments inline on DISQUS Blog
As a blog moderator, I would prefer to have a time limit for editing, say like 15 minutes. After that, I would want the comment to be frozen. Not all blog readers use the "reply" button when leaving a comment in reply, so only locking it when a reply happens isn't always a solution.

in And then there were two… on The Launching Pad
P.S. I don't see Edwards' concession as a sign that his heart wasn't into it. Keep in mind they do tons of polling and political models. It must have become obvious that no matter what he did, he wasn't going to win. It's probably better that he leave the race before Super Tuesday than afterwards. That way people can really choose between the final two candidates. Not only that, but why continue to burn through money when it's not going to be enough?
Personally I see Edwards dropping out as a smart move and a courtesy to us, his supporters.
