in Can a Redfly replace my macbook part 3 on Gear Diary
Defintiely a good series. Lots of folks could learn well from something like this. If you don't need a lot of computing power, you can get away with something like this. And for a lot of folks, the compromises don't seem so bad.

Nice set of writing here as well. You're getting good at this :)

in CTIA is tough on Nokia Daily News
For reasons like this I like having the MWS. I can have vids available instantly from my mobile-enabled website (in MP4 format) and then later upload them to the more popular (and indexed) social networking-like sites.

In a place like that, I'd be using minimum celluar bandwith (between 3G and free wi-fi, the site would only be down if i took lots of large vids and had no means to portably charge).

Cool idea; but I think that a .name and one making their own page (on their own server) that they can register would be a bit better (and probably a tad more secure).

Pretty neat nonetheless.

Jonathan the interesting part is the not having to make a site. the site is just info that can be clicked to contact based on the device in which you connect.

I've been using it as well, and I like it. Though I get delays in messages coming to me from time to time (network issue). Will get my writeup done in the coming days, this service is defintiely something that many businesses should use.

in Wither instant messaging (Nokia?) on Mobile Industry Review
Dude; there's more than just tech swapping that happens when a company is acquired. There are tons of processes that need to be aligned from the smaller company into Nokia that takes time. Add to that the people element (training, hiriing, firing, etc) and you have a long process before its "business as usual."

Just because you get a new toy doesn't mean that you will be able to flaunt it for all its worth immediately. It can take up to 18mos for things like this to bloom. Business processes, business processes, business processes...
Malcolm Murphy Of course there's a load of process stuff to go through, but OZ/Nokia has completely stopped acquiring new operator customers. Not slowed down, not hiccuped, completely stopped.

When I've worked in big companies that acquire smaller companies, usually what happens is that one day you have a new set of products to sell and a target. Or the acquired company sits on its own in a corner and carries on as it did before for a couple of years. Either way, you still go after new customers...

I've got to chime in with many others and offer a bittersweet congrats (I knew I should have tried to join the team a few months back). Really great though to see that a company is not just willing to, but has put their money where their interests are.

Going suck not reading you guys more often. Guess I'll have to turn one of my sites into MIR v2 ;)

Blessings on the change of pace. We indeed live in exciting times.

in Mr Operator: Palm Pre - destined for European failure on Mobile Industry Review
Time is indeed the key note here. And Palm will not only need time to make sure that the Pre is as great as needed, but also time to keep themselves afloat financially. I don't know that Palm will make it without another signifiant influx of cash from somewhere if they fumble the US launch.

That being said, the fact that Palm doesn't have a savory reputation might play well for it. They can build without preconceptions (sorry), and if those variables play into their favor, have something of a niche to themselves until the rest of folks catch up with those integration pieces.

*I disagree with the hardware focus that Mr. Operator took in this piece; its never about the hardware for devices like this unless the hardware can vanish and expose the goodness of the software - hence the current rush to touchscreen-ful devices.

MrOperator's picture
MrOperator Another point:

20 seconds after getting hold of my first G1 I handed it to a female colleague and asked her to type an SMS. She has the fingernails of a normal woman - not talons, but also not trim man-nails. She completely failed to connect with the top line keys on the G1's keyboard, handed it back and said "that's one phone no-one in this office will be buying"

Hardware is 90% of the sell. OS is something you learn to live with, or churn to a different vendor after 18 months of pain - best example in the world - 4 letters:RAZR
MrOperator's picture
MrOperator What - like the G1 hardware wasn't a 600lb anchor around Android's neck?

Had the G1 been able to fit in the back pocket of a pair of tight jeans like the 3G iPhone can, they would have sold twice as many. Virtually no women purchased the G1, almost entirely because of the hardware.

in Exclusive Video: Visiarc’s “Mobile Documents” for Nokia on Mobile Industry Review
Very cool; glad I waited until the end of the day to check this out. Ironically, I just pressed my Internet Tablet back into duty in order to do just what this app is proposing, but I'm doing it much in a more cludgy manner.

Really liking the performance. Would make for a heck of a change to the default email and document viewing apps on S60, BB, and WinMobile devices that's for sure.

The more I see vids about the Pre, the more I am just impressed at the simple things Palm has done to make things useful without having to think about them. So many lessons that other mobile companies need to just outright copy.

in Is the stylus indicative of shoddy UI design? on Mobile Industry Review
No, requiring a styli is not indicitive of bad UI. However, not optimizing an interface for stylus input is bad UI and leads to bad UX.

The key with any UI is creating the least amount of friction towards doing something. If a mobile device takes on the tool of a stylus, then the goal for least friction is somethink akin to sticky note and pen. If the UI isn't designed with such lessened resistance, then those who enjoy a stylus-driven UI are really not given the most optimal experience.

Personally, I don't care for any stylus driven UIs. I don't think that most mobile devices with smaller than a 4in screen need them ;)

in Palm’s Synergy could be game changing on atmaspheric endeavors
I've said it time and time again, and pretty much I agree with you @atmasphere; if mobile deviecs would be made to stop trying to sync everything, and would just serve as something that presents an aggregrated view, it would make it a lot easier for social networks to have a measurable impact beyond current niches.

Jonathan's picture
Jonathan Sync is hard ... aggregated view would be great. I've been thinking about this more though since writing this post and wonder whether this is view only or whether you can make changes that go back upstream.

Can I modify a contacts email on my Pre adding their personal info from Facebook into my exchange info ...

How do you not see duplicates?

Most importantly how and where do I configure this all?

in The T-Mobile G1: The Whatley Response on Mobile Industry Review
Ah. Someone else noticed that 'google centricity' too. That's one of the reasons that I think the Palm Pre got it right. If you are going to sync online services, might as well get the whole crap-load of them and be done with it, rather than just one.

Always loving the opinion.

in Planning for the digital TV transition - do it now! on atmaspheric endeavors
This change won't effect me one bit. I don't have cable, and don't watch TV via antenna (DVD only, and web for the rest). Frankly, the amount of press about it where I am has been minimal, especially given the holiday season. Ah well. Maybe someone will put something together, or face PR-hell.

in Should a “mobile computer” fit in your pocket? on atmaspheric endeavors
Yes. It should fit in your pocket. Of course, the screen should also be in that 4-5in range as well so that you can see enough that its not uncomfortable for productivity tasks or the occasional search-and-contact.

I've been quite mobile for sometime. And even in my latest jump in making my N95 my main computer, I realize that there's a lot about what we do with computing that seems like it needs a lot of space, but really doesn't.

Devices will adjust to us, but we are also adjusting to the fact that mobility, portability, and ease of productivity need to be at the top more than just comfort.

in How long will we be trapped in this mobile hell hole? on Mobile Industry Review
Its kind of funny coming back to this post after many months. There's a bit happening in the way of change here, but its not at all as fast, or as cheap, as any of us would like.

That being said, there's nothing like people getting it. And for that, I'm kind of happy that we can have these rants and push things forward.

in Changes-a-foot to SMS Text News on Mobile Industry Review
I agree with the rest that the design is nice and clean; probably overly red, but hey, every brand has its color :)

The comment about the front page being too long I agree with. One of the things I liked best in your last look was that only a few stories got the summary detail, and the rest were just the linked headlines. That would seem to be able to keep the front page from scrolling too much.

The banner isn't as "soft" as it was before. It needs curves and maybe a gradient in there somewhere. It feels like a step backward graphic design wise in that respect.

Overall though, very cool. Looking forward to seeing what all that will be convered from this non-SiliconValley slant (thank you soooo much for having this slant on things). From one mobile evangelist to another (well, many others as its a team of you), congrats and blessings.

in Youth Review: Nokia E66 – A Disappointment. on Mobile Industry Review
Ignoring for a moment that this review was done by a teen; it says a lot about a company whose user interface is challenging for those familiar with mobile devices.

Nice review, and thanks for spitting in plain language what many of us have said about mobiles since features became more important than it just working.

miko samantha, having said that, it is indeed sad that there are hundreds of cell phones with useless features.
Samantha's picture
Samantha Hi Awright,

Thanks for the comment, and for reading.

I'm a firm believer that there is no point in having a feature if it is useless. The music playback is useless therefore it shouldn't be there. And if Nokia insist on having a camera, at least make it work at night!

Thanks again,
Samantha.

in For normobs, Twitter simply isn’t on the radar — still on Mobile Industry Review
Its really simple; twitter users are of a particular type of personality type and character type. The world is not made only of these people and therefore services that cater to just those types have to have another reason for being needed besides "its just the thing to do."

Unlike many who "live" on the web; I don't subscribe to every new service out there. I analyize my needs and then use what works best. Sometimes its only something used for a moment (Evernote and Remember the Milk), other times it has value beyond the inital interest and so it stick around (mobile email, Jaiku). To gravatate to everything new is a signifiant sign of unrestlessness, and usually means that the person is looking to be fulfilled by something or trying yet to find out who they are. When you find out who you are, following the latest thing is less of a concern to just living.

in Nokia Leaks Its Own Handset After Publicly Ranting About Leaks on The Outsidr
Controlled marketing is a just that controlled. Nokia has no control over leaks such as what happened with the E71. They would not be able to recover easily from leaked demonstrations of bad firmware (which would make it into a shipping version). For any public company, the lack of control about anything pertaining to their reputaiton is uncharted and not wanted territory.

The 5800 placement is very controlled; there is and was a lot that had gone into that. I wish that I could be sure as t what Nokia's next steps are, but those are right to be played close to the chest. I do fear though that Nokia might not have had a few ducks in a row to really build off of this. Something about the mobile not releasing until later this year just kinda gets at me. Unless the DVD of The Dark Knight is coming sooner rather than later (6-8months is usual for these things), and then with that DVD launch is something simlar to what they did with Spidey in terms of bundling it with the device, etc., then maybe it could be something. But its going to be controlled.

Peep the movie, there are those that follow the rules, and those that don't. Nokia is like the Batman character in that its finding itself by following rules that may or may not exist for those competiting with it. The truth of whether that works or not is in how Nokia will be received as a hero or villian when the product finally comes.

in Nokia Leaks Its Own Handset After Publicly Ranting About Leaks on The Outsidr
i agree to a small extent; nokia wants to build buzz in a controlled manner. i am not sure that they could handle the uncontrolled marketing that the iphone got. at the same time, the phone while nice was not a major ooh in the movie. the tech of using sonar in a phone to create an image and track folks gave more of a buzz. now, if nokia can come out with some kinds of ads within a few weeks time that builds on this, that's great. but if the device goes back to a veil of secrecay then this placement was for nothing, or the device was late coming to market and nokia has bigger eggs to fry.
outsidr's picture
outsidr I'm still of the opinion that it's a tad bit ridiculous that Nokia would put a pre-announced handset in a movie after the private and public reaction to the E71 video. I'm not clear as to how this is different.

If Nokia has all of the sudden done a 180 and decided that leaks are good, it should use all of the resources at its disposal to find the source of the E71 leak (remember, the article on the Nokia Conversations blog posed that it may have been a Nokia employee behind the leak - I have no idea if this is the case to be honest) and it should promote him or her to head of whatever department is now in charge of leaking handsets. Why? Because the E71 video generated infinitely more valuable interest and anticipation among potential customers than the Batman / 5800 placement will have when all is said and done. Yes, I'm saying this despite the fact that The Dark Knight was seen by the entire free world...
